The Rotary Club of Washago & Area – Centennial PURPOSE: Pre-Induction Meeting Fireside Chat Purpose 1. 2. To outline to the prospective member the history and purpose of Rotary. To provide a clear understanding of the obligations and the level of commitment expected of members of The Rotary Club of Washago & Area - Centennial. PART I HISTORY Founded in 1905 by Chicago Lawyer Paul Harris Meet regularly for fellowship & exchange of business ideas. Agreed to set high standards of business & limit membership to one from each profession. Rotated meetings among members. Rotary is now a service organization. Through various fund raising projects and volunteer time, Rotarians make significant contributions to improving their local community and communities around the world. In fact Rotary is no longer a means whereby business people promote or further their own business interests. Hence Rotary International. PRESENT STATISTICS World Membership Countries Clubs Districts 1,222,293 166 34,118 530 The Rotary Club of Washago was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Gravenhurst in 2005 on the 100th anniversary of Rotary. We had 21 members the day we were chartered. Today we have 19. Our District is 7010 and there are 45 clubs in the district. Our District includes Barrie to the south, Collingwood to the west, Peterborough in the east and Kapuskasing, Timmins and Rouyn/Noranda in the north. We also have 4 clubs in our District who speak French. (See attached map.) The Rotary year runs from July 1st to June 30th, with a new President and board which are elected for each club, as well as a change of International President and District Governors. Page 2 Each year there is a District Conference for 2-3 days in the fall, as well as an International Conference held in the spring, in a different country each year. Also each yeaar, a Rotary Inteernational Convention is held at a different location throughout the world in the spring. PART II Rotary provides its members with the opportunity to give something back to the community that supports them. It also provides the opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy the camraderie and fellowship that prevails at meetings and social functions. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Meetings: (a) (b) (c) (d) 2. Our club meets every Wednesday from 7:15 to 8:30 AM sharp at The Washago Community Centre. Each Rotarian is assigned a duty at our weekly meetings on a rotating monthly basis. Special Project Meetings. Looking for Potential New Members. Makeups: If you miss one of our Wednesday meetings, you are expected to do a makeup at another club, 2 weeks prior or after the missed meeting date. NOTE: We believe one of the reasons our club is a very strong club is our high level of attendance. Elections for directorships take place in early December for a one year term to begin on July 1st. PROJECTS You will be expected to sell tickets for a wide variety of club projects and to participate in the many club fund raising events organized by our club such as Canada Day, Wild Game Dinner, Digital Photo Scavenger Hunt etc. SOCIAL EVENTS You will also be expected to participate in some of the social events throughout the year, eg. President's Party, Charter Events, Christmas Party, Girls Night Out, and Interclub visits etc. Page 4 CLASSIFICATION TALK Each member will present a classification talk to the club, usually within two years of joining the club. This half hour talk about your personal and business life can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. Typically the talk should include about 40% about your personal history and 60% on what you do for a living (your classification) It is an opportunity for you to explain what you do for a living and how you got there. COSTS All operations of the club are funded by the membership and no funds raised from the community are used for club purposes. 1. Entry Fee 2. Annual Dues 3.
