Community of Practice Grant Application The Center for Research on Global Engagement (CRGE) grants support high-quality research designed to strengthen Elon’s commitment to diversity and global engagement. Elon recognizes, values, nurtures, and provides support for innovative approaches that strengthen the linkages between knowledge and experience. CRGE grant proposals should be research-focused and have clear potential to contribute to knowledge about and/or practices related to (e.g., teaching and learning) global engagement. Community of practice (CoP) grants are intended to support an individual or team’s development of a research project over the course of this academic year. A CoP is defined as “people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis.” (Wenger, McDermott, & Snyder, 2002, p. 4). Members of a CoP find value in their interactions through sharing information, insight, advice, and ideas. CRGE CoP grant recipients will participate in monthly meetings and are expected to develop a research proposal by the end of the academic year. Stipends of $500 will be awarded to each grant recipient. If you have questions about the application process, please contact Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler at [email protected], or visit the CRGE web site: www.elon.edu/e/academics/crge Themes for the 2016-17 CoP Projects for the 2016-17 year should relate to one of two broad themes described below. 1) The first is global health, and encompasses areas of research and practice related to improving health and achieving health equity for peoples worldwide (Beaglehole & Bonita, 2010). Projects topics might include research on sustainable relationships with community partners/stakeholders, reciprocity, accountability, outcomes assessment, ethics, global health competencies, cultural competencies and/or cultural humility, among many others. Grant recipients will meet with Cindy Fair (Human Service Studies and Public Health) and Paula DiBiasio (Physical Therapy Education) on the following Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:30 pm: October 20, November 17, December 8, February 16, March 9, and April 13. (Applicants should be able to attend the majority of meetings, but the dates may be altered due to conflicts with participants’ schedules or campus events.) 2) The second theme is mentoring high-impact practices (HIPs) in global contexts (Kuh, 2008). For a brief summary of HIPs and student engagement, see this summary http://www.centerforengagedlearning.org/high-quality-high-impact-practices/ Project topics might include research on key characteristics of high quality mentoring of HIPs in local/global contexts, comentoring between faculty and community partners, integrating student learning and participation in HIPs across contexts, among many others. Grant recipients will meet with Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler (CRGE and Psychology) and Amy Allocco (Religious Studies) on the following Wednesdays from 4 to 5:15: October 12, November 16, December 7, February 8, March 8, and April 12 (Applicants should be able to attend the majority of meetings, but the dates may be altered due to conflicts with participants’ schedules or campus events.)
