• This contribution poses a question to the group
about the need for coexistence certification testing,
particularly since increasing number of 802 and
non-802 wireless services now need to share the
airwaves under new FCC regulations.

New FCC Regulations, New Rules of Coexistence
•
New FCC regulations (White Spaces, 3650 to 3700 MHz contention
band) force new coexistence standards and architectures:
– 802.11y
– 802.16h
– IEEE P1900.4a, an amendment to 1900.4, “Standard for Architectural
Building Blocks Enabling Network-Device Distributed Decision Making for
Optimized Radio Resource Usage in Heterogeneous Wireless Access
Networks - Amendment: Architecture and Interfaces for Dynamic Spectrum
Access Networks in White Space Frequency Bands”
• Coexistence standards are diverse, complex and
intertwined, so how do we assure peaceful coexistence?
• Do we need to verify, via a formal process, interoperability
and coexistence of WSDs with other IEEE 802 wireless
services, with broadcasting services, wireless
microphones, etc.?

Test Organizations and Industry Alliances
• Test organizations, such as the Wi-Fi
Alliance, the WiMAX Forum, ETSI and LSTI*
typically focus on testing products for
compliance and interoperability for their
specific industries.
• Coexistence testing across different
standards in the bands recently opened by
the FCC may be a new concept.

Types of Coexistence Testing
• Functional and protocol testing
– Device tested against a golden reference (i.e. base station
against a golden client & vice versa)
• Interoperability testing
– Device tested in a test bed that incorporates other devices
configured to emulate common coexistence scenarios
• Emissions and ACLR testing
– Environmental chamber setup with test antennas
• Is there a need for a WS coexistence alliance
focused on ensuring 802.19 compliance?
Acceptable user experience? FCC compliance?

Conclusion
• Coexistence protocols for heterogeneous devices
in TV White Spaces are complex and new
products are unlikely to work perfectly when
released, creating bad first impressions with the
users and thus jeopardizing the success of new
services.
• Thorough testing is the only way to guarantee
services will coexist in an orderly manner,
providing acceptable user experience.
