Thursday, 13 July 2017 Preparing for London 2012 Mark Frost Senior Transport Planner Understanding Olympic Travel Impact • TfL have analysed likely impact on transport network (road and public) during games time. • Their website www.getaheadofthegames.com summarises the data that they have available • Clear maps of the ORN available from http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandsc hemes/22409.aspx Olympic Impact Broadly there are six main Olympic transport challenges which may impact on this area, to a greater or lesser extent 1) Torch relay event – through Hounslow on 24 July. Temporary traffic restrictions/congestion 2) Staff having to travel in or through central London (in particular tube lines which serve Stratford). There may be some additional demand on the London Overground from Richmond (via Gunnersbury) but this is unclear at the moment. 3) Business (or leisure) travel using Heathrow Airport. Journeys (by car) in vicinity of airport (particularly mid August) 4) Impact of the ORN – in particular firms that have offices, regular meetings or make deliveries in central london 5) Staff travelling in from around Eton Dorney when Olympic and Paralympic rowing races are on 6) Road events – particularly cycle time trial around Richmond/Kingston on 31 July/1 August. Ways of mitigating (1) Reduce the amount of staff travel undertaken - Take leave if at all possible. - Compressed working week and flexi-leave - Work from home Business Travel - Do not arrange to attend meetings in Central London or in Hammersmith during Games Time. - Avoid arranging local meetings wherever possible, particularly on the 31st July and 1st August. Avoid travel to the west of the borough if possible (Heathrow Area) and towards Hammersmith during Games Time. - If meetings are essential, try to organise them before the games (w/c 16th July), in between the games (w/c 20th August) or after the games (after the 12th September) or outside peak hours. Wherever possible cluster meetings together to reduce multiple trips. - Consider the use of teleconferencing as an alternative to physically travelling to meetings. Ways of mitigating (2) Change the way you travel Promote walking and cycling Encourage car sharing Encourage public transport (on some trips) If car use is unavoidable it may be necessary to: - allow more time for the journey; - allow flexibility in the start and finish times, avoiding the peak hours - consider alternative routes that avoid hotspot areas at Games time Dealing with suppliers Deliveries – Arrange for all deliveries to be made before games time wherever possible (stationary etc). Non-perishable goods should be stockpiled. Sectors such as catering, hospitality and retail are predicting large increases in demand, consider whether this has any impact on your suppliers.
