Athlete Selection criteria
Competitions
2017 World University Games – Taipei, Taiwan – 21-27 August 2017
Selection Event
2017 Australia Championships – Brisbane, 9 – 13 April 2017
Eligibility
To be considered for selection, an athlete must be:
a) an Australian citizen who is eligible to represent Australia at the FISU World
University Games as per FINA General Rule 2 (GR 2);
b) a registered member of Swimming Australia Ltd. (SAL);
c) available to fulfil all Team Commitments;
d) able to meet the fitness requirements (listed below);
e) be at least 17 and less than 28 years of age on January 1 in the year of
competition (i.e. born between 1989 and 1999), in accordance with the
FISU Regulations;
f) Agree to partially cover the tour costs, approximately (TBC), as advised by
Australian University Sport to attend the World University Games.
g) Either:
(i) be enrolled in, and currently proceeding towards, a course of study at a
university, college of technical and further education or such other
tertiary organisations included on the National Register of Higher
Education Providers. For the purposes of this sub-clause "currently
proceeding" includes the fact that the Athlete is not deferred from their
course of study at the time eligibility is to be; or
(ii) have graduated from one of the institutions referred to in clause g(i)
after 3 July 2016.
h) Athletes selected onto the 2017 FINA World Championships team will be
eligible for selection onto the World University Games team, provided this is
part of their competition plan and discussed with the National Head Coach
or National Youth Coach prior to the Australian Championships.
Fitness
requirements
The GM,P must be satisfied that selected athletes are in full training and have
demonstrated an uncompromised commitment to preparation for peak
performance at the World University Games.
An athlete may be requested to undertake a time trial (fitness test) to
demonstrate that they are prepared to compete at peak performance levels at
the event. This request will be at the total discretion of the GM,P with the timing
of the fitness test to be discussed between the home coach and the National
Head Coach (NHC).
If the NHC is of the view that the athlete is not or will not be in a state of
preparation for peak performance at the World University Games then an
agreed action will be developed to support and address the identified concerns.
If the NHC is of the view that participation of the selected athlete is not in the
best interest of the team or the individual’s performance then the GM,P will
make a recommendation to the Selectors to deselect the athlete from the
team.
Performance
Requirement
Athletes will be considered for selection based on their performances recorded
in the Final or ‘B’ Final at the 2017 Australian Championships provided they are
one of the two highest ranked available athletes in an Olympic event and they
equal or better the qualifying time listed in Appendix 1.

Athlete Selection criteria
1) Priority 1
a) The first and second placed available athlete may be nominated,
provided they are born in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and swim a time
that equals or betters the SAL A qualifying time listed in appendix 1.
2) Priority 2
If two athletes do not qualify for the team in accordance with priority 1 then
the following criteria will apply to determine the nomination of any
additional athletes for these events at the sole and absolute discretion of
SAL;
b) The first and second placed available athlete will be nominated,
provided swim a time that equals or betters the SAL B qualifying time
listed in appendix 1.
c) where one athlete qualifies under clause 1 above, then only the first
placed available finisher in the final (not previously selected in that
event) will be nominated, provided they swim a time that equals or
betters the SAL B qualifying time listed in appendix 1.
Team Size and
Rankings
a) A maximum team size of 20 athletes will be selected on of the World
University Games Team.
b) If the number of athletes meeting the performance requirements exceeds
the maximum team size, athletes will be ranked from highest to lowest
within each priority in individual events using 2016 Swim Vortex two per
nation World Rankings (excluding Australians).
c) In the event of a tie for the final position on the team based on the two per
nation World Rankings, then the 2017 FINA point score will be used to
separate the tied athletes.
Relays
All athletes selected on the team under the performance requirements in this
criteria are eligible for selection in the relay events where Australia has
qualified a team. The Team Head Coach will consider available information for
selection of each relay team at the time of the 2017 World University Games
and their decision will be final.
Withdrawal
Should an athlete withdraw from the 2017 World University Games Team
following the team announcement, the GM,P may request that the Selectors
consider a replacement, provided the replacement athlete has met the
performance requirements. If a replacement athlete is required, the selection
committee will make a recommendation to the High Performance Committee
(HPC).
