OpenDiscussion

MicroTCA for CERN Accelerator Control
An open discussion about the current strategy and usage of
MicroTCA @ CERN
M.Vanden Eynden on behalf of BE-CO
Objectives
• Review the strategic choices made by all CERN actors
regarding embedded platforms
• Discuss the experience gained so far @ CERN with
MicroTCA
• Discuss potential collaborations in the context of a
MicroTCA Proof of Concept (PoC) for Accelerator
control
Agenda
• CERN Accelerator embedded platforms in a nutshell
– Current Status
– Strategy
• Tour de table with EP-ESE & LHC experiments
• Q&A
– Functionality, ease of use, availability of commercial and open source
components, cost effectiveness, market sustainability, etc.
• Potential collaborations
• Wrap-up

Cost effective solution
Concept of “passive backplane” has to be reviewed
PCIe is a well established standard for many years to come

Large “Kit” of commercial and home-made VMEbus modules
With us for the next >15 years -> evolution and support IS required
New generation of MEN A25 SBC with FPGA-based VMEbus interface
Clear MicroTCA adoption from DESY (XFEL) and ESS (LLRF & BI)
Interest from BE-RF (5th MicroTCA workshop in 12/2016 @ DESY)
-> PoC with MicroTCA.4 – with BE/RF TBC?
Large portfolio of modules (NI, Spectrum, etc.)
Linux strategy under discussion with CERN
-> PoC with PXIe – TE/ABT MKI for LHC Injection (Q1 2017)

Tour de table with EP & LHC experiments
• K.Wyllie – LHCb
https://indico.cern.ch/event/357738/contributions/848813/
LHCb will not use mTCA in the foreseeable future.
We had an idea to use ATCA for upgrades in LS2, but
this has been replaced by another solution (PCIe).

• A.Kluge – ALICE
– ALICE has no plans to use xTCA technology
• ATLAS
• CMS
