Proposed Ohio State ∆Y Attendance Policy
Article I:
Definitions & Treatment of Attendance Policy
1. The Ohio State ∆Y Attendance Policy shall be considered an
extension of the chapter by-laws and shall be treated as such. This
includes voting/alteration practices.
2. The following definitions shall be used in the Ohio State ∆Y
Attendance Policy:
a. Present: Any member or AM who is in attendance at an
official fraternity function at the beginning of said function
shall be considered present.
b. Absent: Any member or AM who is in not in attendance at an
official fraternity function shall be considered absent.
c. Tardy: Any member or AM who arrives in attendance at an
official fraternity function any time after the beginning of
the function shall be considered tardy.
d. Official Fraternity Functions: See Article II.
Article II:
Qualifications of Official Fraternity Functions
1. Official Fraternity Functions include, but are not limited to, the
following: chapter meetings, service events, philanthropic &
fundraising events, Standards of Excellence required events,
initiation rituals, Founder’s Day celebrations, ‘rush week’
recruitment events, etc.
2. Any member may petition to make any event not included in the
above list an Official Fraternity Function by filing a petition with
the VP of Administration one month prior to the event. The
petition shall be evaluated by the President and VP of
Administration.
Article III:
Attendance Expectations
1. All members are expected to attend all Official Fraternity
Functions (OFF’s).
2. All members ranked 1st, 2nd, or 3rd with the University shall be
allotted 3 unexcused absences per semester.
3. All members ranked 4th or above with the University shall be
allotted 4 unexcused absences per semester.
Article IV:
Excused vs. Unexcused Absences
1. Any absence not considered an excused absence shall be
considered an unexcused absence.
2. The following reasons shall be considered sound reasoning for
an excused absence: class/exam, illness, loss of friend/family
member, religious event/holiday, commitment in another
organization or work with greater prior notice than the OFFy,
meetings with University officials (advisors, etc.), etc.
a. Other reasons for excused absences may be considered on
a case-by-case basis by the Chapter President, Advisor,
and/or other executive board member.
b. In order for an absence to be considered an excused
absence the Chapter President, Advisor, and/or other
executive board member must be notified more than 24
hours prior to the beginning of the OFF, except in cases
of family emergencies, or illness.
Article V:
Consequences/Results of Unexcused Absences
1. Any member who exceeds their allotted amount of unexcused
absences shall be subject to the following repercussions.
a. Upon reaching allotted amount of unexcused absences:
Written notification of number of unexcused absences.
b. One additional unexcused absence beyond (a):
Sober monitor at next social function & 1 additional shift of
work (checking ID’s, working the bar, etc.).
OR
3 additional required service hours (may be done on own,
or at a chapter service event).
c. Two additional unexcused absences beyond (a):
Additional service of (b) & meeting with President and
Chapter Advisor regarding attendance.
d. Three additional unexcused absences beyond (a):
Third service of (b) & Judicial Board hearing.
2. Any member who does not use any of their allotted unexcused
absences shall be recognized at the semester’s final chapter
meeting.
