Autumn 2010
IN MEMORY OF COUNCILLOR KEN SMITH
(Councillor Ken Smith
Died 10th August 2010)
Cllr Smith will be very much missed
by his colleagues and staff on the
Town Council, for his hard work, his
dedication to the town, his sense of
humour and his calm
commonsense during hectic
debates.
Cllr Smith served as chairman of
the Planning Committee for 6 years
and fought many battles to try and
ensure that North Hykeham
development was fitting to the town.
Sometimes he lost, but he never
gave up trying to protect the town,
particularly from waste disposal
development.
Ken was Town Mayor in 2007 and
as such welcomed Siemens to the
town and worked to encourage
better liaison with other businesses,
as he felt that a sound
manufacturing and industrial base
could be the lifeblood of a
prosperous town. He was an
enthusiastic supporter of any event
held in the Town and was one of
the workers who brought the
‘Nativity on the Green’ to fruition.
He was always to be seen
supporting these occasions, despite
his ill health towards the end.
Cllr Smith was respected by all who
came into contact with him, as they
recognised that he was very moral
and tried to be honest and fair in all
his dealings as a Councillor and
Mayor. He strongly believed that
North Hykeham and Lincolnshire
itself had a lot to offer and should
be dynamic forces in delivery of
services to the people. He set an
excellent example in this, and led
from the front.
ARE YOU WHAT THE COUNCIL
NEEDS?
Next May, the local elections will
take place for the Town Council.
The Council has five wards and
needs 18 Councillors.
Several of our Councillors who
have served this town for many
years will be stepping down,
hopefully, to allow new blood in and
to take the Council forward again
for the next four years.
In January, it is intended to hold an
‘Open Evening’ for anyone
interested in finding out more about
the work done by Town Councillors
with a view to standing for election.
It really is one of the most
interesting parts of Local
Government as this sector is the
one nearest to the people.
If you are interested, please let the
office know by phone, email or
letter, or just watch out for posters
giving details of this ‘Open
Evening’.
CHRISTMAS TREES ON SHOPS
We hope that residents will enjoy
seeing the town brightened up
again this year at Christmas as the
Town Council is encouraging
businesses and shops within the
town to display a small illuminated
tree on their premises. This should
spread the feeling of Christmas,
which we started with the lights on
the Village Green area last year,
around the town. Hopefully, people
travelling through will be more
tempted to stop and shop in the
town and residents will enjoy the
warm feeling that these lights bring
to the town. In the interests of the
environment, we can report that all
our lights are LED and the
Christmas trees are solar powered.
CHRISTMAS SHOP WINDOW
COMPETITION
Will be taking place again this year.
If you wish to enter your shop
window in this competition please
contact the office. The Council
feels it is good to reward shop
keepers who make the effort to
brighten up the town, and thank
you all in advance.
MILLENIUM GREEN LAKE
Cllr Tony Hillier
WANTED one male domestic
goose, for three females looking for
courtship with perhaps a family in
mind. These three females have
not experienced male company
since birth so may be a little shy to
begin with. However they tell me
they are prepared to share his
affections.
Also wanted is a male Muscovy
duck for a female who has lost her
mate. She also has a family in
mind. If transport is a problem give
me a ring on 01522 881601 and I
will collect. They will be joining
many other species on the wildlife
preserved area, where they are fed
daily by their many friends.
HELP WANTED FOR NATIVITY
ON THE GREEN 2010
Tony Hillier Chairman of the
Community Liaison Committee.
You should by now be aware that
we hold Christmas Nativity
Celebrations on the Village Green
every year. This year it will be held
on the evening of the 15th
December starting at 6.00pm and it
is planned to be even bigger and
better with more stalls and more
entertainment for everyone.
However the preparation on the
morning takes an awful lot of
manpower, so I am asking anyone
with a few hours to spare to join us
at 9am to help erect the stalls and
generally help to make this another
spectacular evening for the people
of this area. Young or mature, male
or female, your help would be
greatly appreciated if you could
spare just a few hours.
Tea and coffee is usually provided
by the Mayor and the eateries are
open for those who feel hungry.
NORTH HYKEHAM
CAROL SERVICE 2010
The Town Carol Service will take
place on Sunday 28th November
2010 at 3pm at All Saints Church
and afterwards at The ARK for
Mince Pies and Mulled Wine
PERFORMANCE
AREA
EVERYONE WELCOME
PERFORMANCE AREA
Cllr Fields
The performance area has been
up for nearly a year now. We, the
performance committee, feel that
we need to take more of a lead in
getting entertainment onto the
performance area. As a council we
are aware of the financial situation
the country is in and we would not
want to commit a large amount of
tax payer’s money to running
events on there. Instead we are
looking at putting one big event on
in the summer. However we would
like to get more use out of the
performance area and get more
people down to the beautiful village
green, to enjoy a Saturday or
Sunday of music and
entertainment. We are still letting
out the Performance Area for free
but we do want to hire bands and
entertainment. So we are asking
you the residents and the
businesses of North Hykeham to
sponsor a band. We are trying to
get eight different bands with all
types of music to perform on the
Village Green next year. With your
sponsorship you will get to
advertise your company or name
on the adverts that will go out.
Please help and support local
events and let’s have some
happiness in this bad time of
financial crisis. For more
information you can contact North
Hykeham Town Council or myself
Councillor Matthew Fields on
01522 889750.
SKATEPARK
Cllr Fields
After five years the Skate Park is
ready for an upgrade.
The Town Council are hoping to
install some new rides and maintain
the existing ones.
Quotes have been received and the
Skate Park committee will be looking
over the information received, to
ensure that the Skate Park continues
to be a great place for its users.
We hope the work will take place
towards the end of the year or early
next year, so it will be open for school
holidays in April.
Can I take this time to point out this is
not being paid with tax payers money
but with 106 monies.
It is amazing that after 5 years the
Skate Park continues to be a great
success. When the Skate Park was
first suggested, a lot of people were
concerned over noise and anti-social
behaviour.
We are pleased to say that we have
been told how fantastic and
successful the Skate Park is and how
it is admired by other councils over
the county.
PARKS AND RECREATIONS
COMMITTEE
Cllr S Roe Committee Chairman
North Hykeham is blessed with six
large open spaces with a wide
range of facilities spread among
them. The Parks and Recreation
Committee are responsible for the
development, maintenance and
management of all apart from the
Memorial ground and the
Millennium Green which are
managed by independent trustees.
The council parks are open from
dawn till dusk. Dogs are welcome
on all the parks as long as the
owners clean up after them. (Dogs
must be kept on leads on the
Village Green.)
The committee is always looking at
ways to increase people’s
enjoyment of the parks. They are
looking at putting additional play
equipment for older children on the
memorial ground, a bike track on
Glebe Park and additional seats
and picnic tables on all of them. We
still have money available to buy
more land for another park and to
improve the facilities on the present
ones. If you have any thoughts on
how we can add to your enjoyment
of any of the parks please don't
hesitate to let us know.
