MEMBER CHOICE IS AP’S COMPREHENSIVE
CONTENT, TECHNOLOGY AND LICENSING SOLUTION.
Member Choice Complete provides access to all English-language stories produced every day around the
world. This collection of news, from a nearby state or a faraway country, gives you the ability to choose the
most meaningful and relevant content for your audience across multiple categories including sports, business,
entertainment, lifestyles and politics.
Member Choice Limited provides newspapers with a very tight selection of daily top breaking news in for
newspapers that use minimal national and world news, yet want a handful of the most timely stories each day.
Most of the content in both versions is breaking news. But the AP also produces a significant number of
“regular features” that can be incorporated into a host of products in your portfolio. These items include
columns, reviews, lists, statistics and other types of text.
This guide details when each of these “regular features” move, and which features are included with Limited.
You’ll find descriptions, to help you navigate and quickly find the content you need. It reflects our newsroom’s
output today, but keep in mind the AP is always evolving to better meet your needs. We’ll provide regular
updates.
In addition to this PDF document, a spreadsheet is available that would allow you to sort this information
several different ways or electronically cut and paste just the information you want.

The “report of the news” mentioned above is known officially
and contractually as the Basic Service. In 2009, this service
was revamped in response to requests from AP’s newspaper
members who sought new service options that reflected the
current news media landscape. The revamping led to the
introduction of “Member Choice,” which is now the AP’s
Basic Service.
In addition to Member Choice, AP offers supplemental
services that members may license to create a package of
news content that best meets their local market needs. It also
is continually exploring industry trends and technological
solutions to help members stay ahead in the rapidly changing
information marketplace.
In addition to the core text content, Member Choice includes
flexible licensing to enable members to use AP content in a
wide range of local publications, as well as the technological
tools—AP Exchange—to more easily sort and prepare the
expanded content.
There are two Member Choice options:
Complete:
−− AP’s core English-language text services, covering U.S.
and world news, politics, business, sports, lifestyles,
entertainment and general news.
−− English language international coverage, such as news from
Latin America and Asia.
−− Text of 50 state news reports.
−− Money & Markets financial data.
Limited:
−− A curated text report for newspapers that includes a small
sampling of the top U.S. and global news stories across
several categories
−− The full home state reports. (Additional state wires are
available for a fee.)
Member Choice features a flexible opt-in or opt-out plan for four
types of content: sports, lifestyles, news analysis and Money &
Markets. Members who choose Complete can opt out of one or
all of these content types and Limited members can add them to
their service.
Supplemental services: AP offers services beyond the Basic
Service for license. These services either offer specialized
content, such as news in Spanish, or provide a package that
combines content and technical solutions with AP news
judgment, such as news produced for turn-key online use.
These include AP Photostream, including free use of AP archived
photos, and AP Top News for websites.
The next wave: AP continually develops services in response
to member needs to leverage the size and resources of the
cooperative to provide solutions most members would find
beyond their ability to develop as individual news organizations.
Examples:
−− AP Content Enrichment: this automated process tags
newspaper member content with proprietary metadata—
including subject categories and entities (people, places and
things). The metadata serves as a foundation for additional
Web applications and opportunities.
−− Member Marketplace: A rights-managed environment that
allows members to share stories, photos and graphics with
each other, including groups within a state or
same ownership.
−− AP Mobile: A multimedia service that offers access to local
and national news from trusted sources for wireless users,
designed specifically for market-leading smartphones.
THE BASICS ABOUT BASIC SERVICE:
AP directors must approve the scope of content
and cost of Basic Service.
−− AP bylaws require that newsgathering costs shall
be “equitably apportioned” among members.
−− AP rates are based on a member’s circulation and on a
percentage of its online traffic.
−− The Basic Service is deemed to be the core text of news

NEWS
The AP’s mission is to be the essential global news network, providing distinctive news services of the highest
quality, reliability and objectivity with reports that are accurate, balanced and informed.
AP supplies a steady stream of news around the clock to its domestic members, with the industry’s most
sophisticated digital photo network and a 24-hour online news service. On any given day, more than half the
world’s population sees news from AP.
In addition to this list of national fixtures, many states have specific “regular features” that move as part of their
state reports.

BUILD A CUSTOM NEWS FEED
AP EXCHANGE allows you to build a custom feed of news on locally relevant topics. You can use the “Saved Search” option to build
continually updating searches for the places, companies, athletes, lawmakers, issues and celebrities you care about most. These searches
save time by eliminating the need to scroll through non-relevant wire content and ensure you will not miss locally relevant stories and
photos. You also can use the email alert function to have search results sent to you.
Here’s how it’s done:
1. Click on the “Advanced Search” option at the top left of the homepage of AP Exchange.
2. Click “More Options,” which will bring you to a content box in which you can enter your search parameters. Use the Boolean operator
“or” to connect each entry. Also, put quote marks around two or more key words that you are searching for together. You also can use
parentheses and a further identifier for common names, such as (“Jim Brown” and football).
3. Save and name your search.
4. Searches can be updated and edited through the AP Exchange “Manage” page by clicking the “Edit” button on the respective search.
Stories can be emailed to a user by clicking the “Notify Me” box on the search page and saving the search.
A search for local celebrities would appear like this:

The Business news report provides in-depth coverage of, the auto industry, banking and personal finance,
biotechnology, mergers and acquisitions, retailing, stock markets and investments, technology, media, health care,
telecommunications, energy and transportation, travel and workplace issues.
Reporters are based in New York, Washington and 28 other domestic bureaus to provide authoritative coverage of
companies and news sources on each beat.

worldwide. The popular People briefs offer as many as 25 breaking items a week on celebrities’ lives. Editors can
