-Virginia Tech ended its three-game road swing on Saturday against the Delaware Blue Hens.
-Tech went 3-0 with wins over Duke, George Mason (in overtime) and Delaware.
MOVIN’ ON UP
-Tech moved up to No. 12 in the poll this week, the program’s highest ranking ever.
-The Hokies entered the Inside Lacrosse Poll at No. 20 on February 20th. It was the program’s first
ranking since March of 2011.
THE 20-GOAL CLUB EXPANDS
-Emma Harden’s three-goal game against Delaware vaulted her up to 22 goals on the season. She
is the fourth Hokie to reach that mark in 2017.
-Tristan McGinley (35), Kristine Loscalzo (29) and Zan Biedenharn (22) have each eclipsed the 20
goal plateau.
-The Hokies have the 15th leading offense in the nation, scoring 14.64 goals per game.
LET’S GO STREAKING
-The Hokies have several members with impressive point-scoring streaks.
-Five players have scored a point in at least six straight games (Mary Claire Byrne, Zan Biedenharn,
Tristan McGinley, Emma Harden and Kristine Loscalzo).
-Biedenharn and McGinley have each scored a point in all 11 of Tech’s games in 2017.
-McGinley is the only Hokie to score in every game this season.
STREAKS CONTINUED
-The Hokies are on a two-game ACC winning streak, the first of its kind in program history.
-Tech remains ranked for the third consecutive week, a new program best.
-The three-game winning streak is the second longest of the season. A win over William and Mary
would equal the team’s best of 2017 at four games.
THE TRIBE
-William and Mary lost its last time out, a 13-10 decision to ODU.
-The Tribe is led by point leaders:
Lindsey Jenks:
21 pts (14 goals, 7 assists)
McKinley Wade: 16 pts (14 goals, 2 assists)
Abby Corkum: 14 pts (11 goals, 3 assists)

JOHN SUNG
HEAD COACH
FIRST SEASON
OVERALL RECORD: 109-47
Hired May 27, 2016, John Sung joins Virginia Tech after building the Winthrop University
program from scratch beginning in May of 2011. He oversaw the program’s rapid ascent
as a regional powerhouse after beginning competition in 2013. In the program’s third
season, Sung led Winthrop to a 17-4 record, as the Eagles qualified for the NCAA Tournament after winning both the Big South regular-season and tournament titles. In 2016,
Winthrop went 20-3, winning the Big South Tournament championship and advancing to
another NCAA Tournament. The 2016 season marked the team’s second consecutive Big
South regular-season and tournament titles.
The 2015 and 2016 Big South Coach of the Year, Sung currently chairs the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee and also serves on the U.S. Lacrosse Convention Education
Committee. His 2015 squad set Big South single-season records for points, goals (314),
free-position goals (67), shots (633), shots on goal (459), ground balls (384), draw controls (312), and caused turnovers (213). In 2016, Winthrop scored 301 goals, including
58 free-position goals. The Eagles set Big South single-season marks for shots (662),
ground balls (434), and caused turnovers (266).
In addition to compiling a 54-26 overall record at Winthrop, Sung led the Haudenosaunee
Nation to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup
held in Canada. The team finished in seventh place out of a total of 19 teams. He also
coached the team in the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse in the Czech Republic.

Hokie” yell which still is used today. Later, when
Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the
way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and
Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia
Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the
necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest
for such a purpose was held by the student body.
Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Old
asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull
explained the words he used had no hidden or
symbolic meaning, but had been thought up in
an effort to get attention. Hokie soon became a
nickname for all Tech teams and for those people
loyal to Tech athletics.

JUST VIRGINIA TECH,
PLEASE
While the full name of the school is Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University, the school
is commonly referred to as “Virginia Tech.” Founded
in 1872, as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical
College, the university changed its named to Virginia
Polytechnic Institute in 1896. Fans of the athletic
department, as well as media covering the Hokies,
shortened the name to VPI, but it eventually became
Virginia Tech. The “State University” was added in
1970 to bring the official title to what it is today.
Those covering Hokie athletics are asked to refer to
the university as simply “Virginia Tech.” Virginia Tech
University, VPI and SU, VPI&SU, VT or VA Tech are
not recognized names and should not be used.
