Spring/Summer 2016 Creating a Place to Play The Community Design Collaborative awarded Glen Foerd a Design Grant for the adaptive reuse of the historic garden house into a unique playhouse, which will include a play space around the perimeter of the building. A design team of architects, landscape architects, engineers and cost estimators will provide pro bono services worth $15,000 to $25,000. The design team will develop a preliminary conceptual design that can be used to gain community and financial support for the project. To raise awareness for this project, a temporary outdoor play space on the grounds around the garden house, will be installed by July 2016. (continue on page 6) The Grand Staircase Laylight Restoration The laylight restoration project, funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, is making great progress. The focus of the project is the restoration of the decorative plasterwork surrounding the stained glass laylight. Decorative plaster of the period is typically composed of gypsum (calcium sulphate) and lime (calcium carbonate) which together is soluble in water and may be reduced to powder after prolonged exposure to roof leaks. Weight, expansion and general settlement of the ceiling Schuyler Blanchard of Materials Conservation has resulted in a series of fills losses using rubber molds. cracks which will be repaired as part of the project. A negative air system that fully encloses the work area ensures that all dust will be contained throughout the duration of conservation. The light filtered through the opalescent leaded glass emits a warm glow to the room that should serve as a tranquil environment for the traditional and modern plaster techniques to follow. People often forget that Glen Foerd is not only a historic house, but a public park. With Spring approaching, and the threat of snow finally gone, we are moving forward with ways we can improve your park visit. Visitors who walk the grounds’ meandering paths and enjoy scenic views of the water will notice a few additions in the upcoming months. In hopes to better secure the grounds so that visitors can have a wider variety of experiences a perimeter fence will be installed. The fence will reflect the historic nature of the property and will allow us to better recreate the experiences that Glen Foerd’s residents once enjoyed. In the future we hope you’ll spend the afternoon relaxing in rocking chairs on the mansion front porch, sitting in Adirondack chairs near the lily pond and exploring art installations and sculpture throughout the grounds. The gates of the estate will continue to be open dawn to dusk, allowing you the same amount of permitted access that you have come to enjoy in the past. You’ll see a few articles in this addition of the newsletter about other exciting outdoor changes including the first steps towards creating an interactive and imaginative children’s play space at the garden house, and the upcoming installation of an outdoor sculpture by one of our artists in residence, You Myung Gyun. Whether you visit to enjoy the scenery, to assist with our Spring clean-up, play with your children, or dance the day away at Jazz Age on the Delaware, we look forward to seeing you soon! The mission of Glen Foerd on the Delaware is to connect visitors to the legacy of Glen Foerd through programs in the arts, nature and history and to preserve and protect the landscape, buildings and Meg Sharp Walton collections for the enjoyment and enrichment of the Executive Director community and future generations. 2 Glen Foerd’s Annual Appeal Thank you to all those who contributed to Glen Foerd’s Annual Appeal. Area artists have been given unprecedented access to Glen Foerd’s historic collections and buildings. The residency program has attracted artists across mediums especially those with an interest in historic collections, architecture, environmental art, Philadelphia history, historic homes and water ways. Artists Lewis Colburn and You Myung Gyun were selected to be Glen Foerd’s resident artists. Lewis Colburn recently installed four sculptural pieces inside the mansion inspired by his research into Glen Foerd’s history and architectural changes over time. He utilized 3-D printing to capture Glen Foerd plaster and column details. A public art opening for Lewis’s work will be held on Sunday, April 24th (see interior for details). Detail image of Lewis Colburn’s “An Evening” Artist You Myung Gyun will be working over the next several months on an outdoor installation inspired by the mansion’s visible exterior architecture. Both Lewis and Gyun’s work will be on display for the next year. PLAYSPACE (continued from page 1) Renovating the garden house into a children's playhouse would provide the community and our visitors with a drop-in free form play space that would encourage active imagination and physical activity, while providing families with a safe and serene place to play on a regular basis. A community task force will work with the design team to help form a consensus regarding priorities for the space. The task force will include residents, Glen Foerd partners, elected officials, neighborhood business owners, educators, and of course, children!
