Wilmslow Town FC U12 Cougars vs Fletcher Moss Rangers JFC

Wilmslow Town FC U12 Cougars vs Fletcher Moss Rangers JFC
13 November 2011
A Winning Streak on Remembrance Sunday? (for the first half anyway…)
Wilmslow started well and in the first minutes of the game, play was all in the Fletcher end with lots
of great passing resulting in 2 saved goals. This was followed by several more good passes and some
passing to the Wilmslow end where a good save was made by Lewis. Play passed to Max, Joe and
the ball travelled back up to the Fletcher end where Will (10) was right on target to get our first goal
at 5 minutes in! At 1-0 up Wilmslow were jubilant.
Fletcher Moss then realised that we meant business and set about some stronger play resulting in 2
attempts at our goal, one going wide and the second high shot in superbly saved by Lewis. Our
defence was good and the ball moved back up the field with Max and Ryan midfield resulting in Max
being tackled for the ball. Eventually Fletcher got the better of Wilmslow and came back to equalise
8 minutes later making it 1-1.
Wilmslow had to pull together again and there was some good passing from Callum and Will with
further attempts at goal. Fletcher then took possession and a rapid race up the field saw them miss
two attempts at goal with the ball going wide each time and at the third attempt Lewis came out to
take control of the ball. Play passed down the field to Andre and Will and with some good passing
the ball fell to Luke who, 10 minutes after our first goal, took the opportunity to put another one in
the net for Wilmslow making it 2-1.
The first half progressed with Wilmslow on a high, there was some good tackling by Richard and the
boys were showing better grasp of the off side rule in play (as were some of us mums  on the
touchline). A corner for Fletcher was well defended and tipped out of net by Lewis. Play passed to
Daoud who chased the ball up the field with Max. Fletcher were defending well though and the ball
was travelling quickly back to our net, again it was saved by Lewis kicking the ball out and 2 further
attempts went wide. There was a goal kick from our side with good play in midfield. Max and Dan
took possession again and played to Daoud and Matt but to no avail.
Half Time found some happy Cougars 2-1 up…
Second half pep talk for Fletcher was obviously ‘this isn’t going to be the walk-over’ they may have
expected and they came out on the defensive. Within 5 minutes they’d equalised bringing the score
to 2-2. Some good defence by Wilmslow resulted in Joe taking a corner but Fletcher took control
again and 4 mins later scored to make it 2-3, Wilmslow struck back with good defending while play
remained around the goal area and a good save but in the next minutes Fletcher put another in the
net to make it 2-4. Fletcher then won a penalty for a handball resulting in a further goal to make it 25 and a few minutes later they added another 2 goals to their tally bringing it to 2-7.
Wilmslow fought back and there was a good header away by Max and a great save from Lewis
tipping the ball over the bar but 5 minutes later Fletcher scored another goal bringing the score to 28 and 2 further goals bringing it to 2-10. Spurred on, Wilmslow doggedly chased the ball up field with
some great passing by Ryan, Dan, Will and Will but sadly ‘even with the best ‘Will’s’ in the world’
they couldn’t repeat their first half elation and the final whistle blew at 2-10.
There are lessons to be learned from both halves of the game and Wilmslow will put all their efforts
into repeating the first half performance at the re match next week at Fletcher Moss. Well done to
all the boys today who worked very hard and thanks also to the parents who supported and helped
set up…even if we do need a few ‘lessons’ on how a goal net should be ‘pegged out’ 
