Congratulations to Meabh Donohoe who recently represented Tullow Community School on the Irish Schools under 19 Team Meabh who plays her club rugby with Tullow R.F.C. was selected to play scrum half for the Irish U19’s. This was a 7’s competition held in Sheffield on the 14th and 15th of September, which consisted of 4 matches on Saturday in the pool stages and 2 further matches on Sunday. The Irish ladies performed very well on Saturday winning 3 of their matches and drawing the forth. Therefore finishing first in their pool with our own Meabh contributing with a try. On Sunday the ladies played their semi final, in what turned out to be a classic encounter. Trailing in the final minutes Meabh cut through a gap to score a try to draw the game, bringing it to extra time. At the end of extra time the teams were still level and so the game went to penalties. The best of 3 penalties each. Meabh kicked the first penalty successfully and the Irish team were successfully with the second kick but unfortunately missed the 3rd. But so did the opposition and so for the 3rd time the teams were level and the game had to go to sudden death penalties. Irelands sub out half stepped up to take the next kick, but unfortunately stepping up cold off the bench didn’t help and she just squeezed the ball just wide, leaving the Irish ladies to rue their missed opportunities. Ireland went on to play a 3rd/4th place play of but after the epic encounter from earlier in the day were unable to lift themselves for the game and were comprehensively beaten. Congratulations to all the girls involved in particular to our own Meabh who is under age and eligible to play again next year
