6.0 BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK
6.1 INTRODUCTION
Happiness comes from... some curious adjustment to life.
HughWalpole.
Life presents a continuous chain of struggle for existence and survival” says
Darwin. The observation is since every one of us strives for the satisfaction of our
needs in struggling to achieve something. If we find that the results are not
satisfactory, we either change our goal or the procedure. While doing so, one protects
oneself from possible injury to one’s ego, fails or frustration. It likes shifting to more
defensive position in order to face the challenges of circumstances after the initial
failure. This feature of the living organism is termed as adjustment.
People can be considered as maladjusted and well adjusted. This can be done
on the basis of their relationship with the environment and self. Maladjusted persons
have problems with his environment. Good overall adjustment and a sense of well
being are very crucial factors in providing positive contributions to the society. When
there are problems in adjustment it will leads to stress. Stress is an all pervading
phenomenon in life .If a person is able to deal effectively with a difficulty situation,
the amount of stress he or she may be facing is less. Some events may be perceived in
different people it depends upon the coping resources they use to solve the problems.
As per as the Indian youth are concerned they are dominated mainly by the
parents and other elders in the family .All the important decisions pertaining to their
life are taken by them. This in turn can treat a stressful situation for the students,
ultimately Influencing their personality and behaviour.1
2
In life experiences there are external pressures which stem from the environment. At
the same time every individual has his/her own internal demands. These inner and
outer demands are stronger in college students. This is because college is a time of
transition and transitions mostly are accompanied with changes. Thus college students
need to meet successfully the inner and outer demands for the effective completion of
their learning. Failure to do this will leave them to adjustment problems. If college
students have adjustment problems, it directly and indirectly affects their academic
performance.2
6.2 NEED FOR THE STUDY
Time to grow, to change, to learn and to adjust is human necessary
usually neglected and even held in contempt by a computerized and technological
society. The tremendous competition learning often finds student not getting into a
desired programme or institution for his/her future studies. When the choice of
vocation is done by compulsion from the part of the parents or when the choice made
is unrealistic can lead frustration.03
Nursing students are in the developmental phase of adolescence or young
adulthood they are in a crisis state where they have to face significant changes in their
living circumstances. Entering world of nursing presents students with an array of
changes. Still in their teens, they are asked to change both from adolescent to adult
and from lay person to a professional .The student nurse is entering a vocation where
she has to deal with many kinds of people, so it is necessary that she is well prepared
for the same. 04
3
The students who enroll nursing are often not fully aware of the stress
and strain that accompany training period this may be either because the relatives who
influence the students neglect this aspect wanting better future for their children or
because the media media highlights only the glamour associated with the profession,
which may explain why most most of the nursing students come from low socioeconomic status ultimately however, it is the students who are unprepared. To bean
effective nurse the students should have mental and physical well being, spiritual
sense of society, good habits of study and work, effective behavior in new situations
and a commendable attitude expressed in action. This study will help in assessing the
extent of their adjustment towards self, others and the profession as a whole.05
Today’s Nursing students are tomorrow’s nurses; Nurses are expected to
provide holistic care to individuals and families. In the course of training to be a
nurse, the student is exposed to a multitude of stressors. They have to take up the
responsibility for giving patient care in various situations adolescents who are healthy
want to help others and want to assume responsibility. For this these adolescent
students of nursing should have good adjustment among themselves and to the
environment.
Another source of stress is due to the need to come up to the expectations of
the supervisors in the clinical area, which places additional demands on these students
they may fail to adjust completely or the adjustment pattern adopted may not balance
with the coping mechanisms they use, consequently resulting in psychological
distress.06
A study was conducted on coping as used by senior baccalaureate nursing
students in response to appraised clinical stress. Findings showed that the basic social
problem experienced by these students was the chaos created in their lives while
4
trying to manager the demands of appraised clinical stress the basic social process that
assist the basic social process that assist the students in managing this chaos was the
three stage process of seeking stress care.i.e encountering changing self and regaining
managed self.07
A study conducted to identify stressful events experienced by first year
nursing students especially in the clinical setting and their coping strategies and found
setting and their coping strategies and found that the most frequently reported
stressful event was developing interpersonal relationships dealing with patients
emotional problems, evaluation in clinical area, conflicts between what was taught in
the nursing school or college and the realities of the sick world were most stressful

problems, evaluation in clinical area, emotional problems , evaluation in clinical area ,
conflict between what was taught in the nursing school or college and the realities of
the sick world were most stressful of the sick world were most stressful it was found
that the distress produced during the clinical experience caused termination of a few
students from nursing training.
The investigator has observed that problems like homesickness, somatic
complaints and adjustment problems in hostel were very common in the female
students, whereas many male students expressed a desire to quit the programme,
because they felt the profession was not meant for them as it is a female dominated
profession they were there simply because of pressure from parents who had managed
to secure them a seat with the hope that they would go abroad and make a comfortable
living completion of the course.
Many experienced teachers also revealed to the investigator that adjustment
difficulties are often seen among nursing students during their course of learning and
5
quiet a few of them manifest with psychological distress. Today we need students
who will, as nurses somebody lead the profession are to make successful adjustment
to nursing and be valuable and effective contributors to the health care delivery
system, it is imperative that the pattern of adjustment of nursing students be studied,
so that
Appropriate interventions can be made the was therefore interested in finding out the
adjustment pattern and psychological distress among Bsc nursing students.08
6.3 REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Review of literature is a key step in research process. Review of literature is
defined as a broad, comprehensive study in depth, systematic and critical review of
scholarly publications, unpublished materials, audiovisual materials and personal
communications.

conducted on a representative sample of 1257 1st yr students at the University of the
North, in South Africa, data were collected through the administration of a
questionnaire comprising of 11 categories of problem. It showed that 33-85% of the
students experienced various adjustment problems. This study was helpful in
identifying the adjustment problems of 1st yr university students in African countries
as comparatively little is known about such problems in these countries as compared
to developed countries.09
.
6

severely students from 9th &10th standards studying in urban schools ,aged 13-19 yrs
were selected and were assessed using an adolescent had adjustment problems
concerning concerning physical health, sex, home, psychological and social
functioning and school life10

class college students during final examination. 1st yr students reported similar
emotional responses to the upcoming final examination as upper class students. First
year students were more likely to use distance techniques and self isolation while
upper class students were more likely to use problem focused coping.11
A study did to identify stressful events experienced by first year Nursing
students especially in the clinical setting and their coping strategies and found that
most frequently reported stressful event was developing interpersonal relationships
dealing with patients emotional problems, evaluation in clinical area, conflicts
between what was taught in the nursing school or college and the realities of the sick

A study was carried out on adjustment pattern of international standards, they
examined the differences, If any of adjustment patterns around demographic traits like
country origin, receipt of financial aid, Japanese language ability, length of stay and
student classification for 237 international students, enrolled in severe national
universities throughout japan,234 students completed questionnaires provided by coordinates of the department of international exchange at their university & factors of
adjustment were attained, general, internally controlled, affiliation and externally
dependent. Factors analyzed with respect to demographic traits showed that Asian
students were less adjusted than those of western & Latin American cultures. Those
more proficient in the Japanese language did not prove to be better off, scholarship
recipients were better adjusted than those relying on private source of funding.11
A study conducted titled individual and environmental predictors of
adjustment during the 1st year college 56 1st year students with a mean age of 18-69
years were used as samples. The industrial and environmental predictors of academic
and psychological adjustment were investigated..A group questionnaire session and
to collect the data. The measures used were the gold berg big five factor markers, the
adolescent perceived events scale, the problem solving. Inventory, the Arizona Social
Support Interview schedule, the self perception profile for college students and the
students adaptation to college. Questionnaire results of the study showed that although
individual variable like social support, daily works and distance from home made
8
significant incremental contribution to the prediction of social adjustment and
