Counting by 10 - 10 more, 10 less Lesson plan = 60 min activity This has been developed for use on Sumdog (www.sumdog.com), a new website offering high-quality, free mathematics games for students. Classroom resources Objective • Practice adding and subtracting 10 from multiples of 10 Structure • • 60 min lesson Online activity in pairs Resources • • • Access to the Sumdog website Student worksheets (http://www.sumdog.com/en/Count_By_Ten/attachments/CountByTen_Handout.pdf) Optional: Interactive whiteboard or projector Plan • • Preparation: ◦ Sign up for an account on Sumdog and upload your class (optional). ◦ Print out student handouts. Activity (60 min): ◦ Quickly review counting by 10 (10 min) ◦ Play Sumdog games (40 minutes) ▪ Assign the students in pairs: each pair plays together. Pass out handouts. ▪ Have them start any game. (A game with no timed questions such as Canal Clearup, Athletics, or Street Racer would be good for younger students.) ▪ Ask the students to select the first topic on the handout: Level 2 - "Adding 10 to multiples of 10" ▪ One partner plays for 10 minutes while the other student records any questions they got wrong on their handout. ▪ Students switch and choose: Level 2 - "Subtracting 10 from multiples of 10" ▪ Students continue to play, taking turns so that each student gets a chance on both of the topics. ◦ Review and discuss (10 minutes) ▪ At the end, students take a few minutes each to quiz each other on the questions they got wrong. ▪ Class has a short discussion on what questions were the most challenging.
