On Saturday, March 11, students
in grades 3-6 have the
opportunity to participate in the
annual Academic Day at
Michigan Lutheran High School.
This year’s events include a quiz
bowl and a spelling bee. Many of our middle
grade students plan to participate. The
competition begins at 9:00 am. See you
there!?
On Thursday, March 16, the third quarter of the
school year comes to an end. Report cards go
home on Monday, March 20. Parent-teacher
consultations will be scheduled for that week.
On Friday, March 17, the annual Southwestern
Michigan Teachers’ Conference will be held at
Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Bangor,
MI. This is the only chance in the whole year
that area WELS teachers have the opportunity
to meet as a group to visit one another, study
professionally, and worship together.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday,
March 1
Don’t forget our special
worship services:
Wednesdays, 6:30 PM
Please remember that children in Grades K-6
are singing for our service this Sunday,
March 5. Following worship, everyone is
invited to stay for our Family Sunday School.
We will study a Bible lesson, do a simple craft,
sing together and enjoy brunch. Don’t miss it!
From Mrs. Steinke
Social Studies Classes: Those in States &
Regions will finish learning about the Midwestern
states. Their TEST on Chapter 9 is March 6.
Then we go on to the Southwestern states. That
quiz is on March 22.
Science: The fifth and sixth graders
will work on a chapter about
electricity. Next, they will learn about
stars and galaxies. Third and fourth graders are
studying physical science. They have started a
short chapter which discusses gravity, friction,
and magnetism. Next up will be a study of
energy. First and second graders are also
studying life science. We have just begun a
chapter on how plants and animals live together.
Next we’ll learn about how living things grow and
change.
Math 3: Third graders have finished measuring
length, area, and temperature. We have gone on
to a chapter on spacial reasoning and geometric
shapes. Keep encouraging the boys to study
their multiplication facts. We’ll have a few days
of review at the end of the third quarter for
multiplication and division. Students will also
need to know their facts in April/May when we
get to fractions and decimals.
Computers: Children in Grades 2-6 are working
with typing programs to refamiliarize them with
the keyboard and positions of letters. The
younger children are using internet games to
help them with their math skills.
Preschool
We are practicing many more small motor skills
as well (staying in a designated area – pathway
tracing, and cutting on lines etc.)

Mrs. Pleuss
He who belongs to God
hears what God says. (John 8:47)
As we begin the solemn season of Lent, we have
even more opportunities to hear God’s Word.
We are invited to sit at the Savior’s feet on
Sunday mornings and on Wednesday evenings,
too. Let’s make the most of this opportunity to
soak up all that Jesus has to tell us.
Children in Grades K-4 have just started the
Bible lessons about Holy Week. We are making
a book to remind us of all that happened during
the last week of Jesus’ life here on earth. When
we are finished, we will have a nice
remembrance of Palm Sunday, Maundy
Thursday, Good Friday, and of course, Easter!
We are making great progress in kindergarten
math. Adding numbers from 0 through 10 proved
to be quite easy. We are now working on
subtraction. Learning these number facts will
help a great deal when we have higher numbers
to conquer in first grade.
First graders are working on
adding and subtracting, too, but we are
tackling double digit numbers. So far, no one has
taken off his shoes and socks to use his toes!
March begins the season of Lent. We will learn
Bible stories starting with Raising Lazarus and
continuing to Peter’s Denial of Jesus.
In second grade reading, we just finished a photo
essay about a ferry boat captain who serves near
New York City. Everyone agreed that it would be
fun to be in charge of a ship that passes the
Statue of Liberty every day.
Have the boys continue writing
their name, numbers, and letters.
We’ll add the letters Zz, Xx, Oo,
and Ww in March. I am expecting
more from the boys during the
second half of the year. We are starting to
practice raising our hand vs. just saying an
answer aloud. Also if the teacher calls on one
person, only that person is to answer. This is
harder than you think for preschoolers!
Third and fourth graders have started a Spanish
unit about plants. We will work hard to learn new
vocabulary about las hojas (leaves), los flores
(flowers) and la raíz (roots). Our video teacher,
Señor Morris, will show us a learning game to
help us remember. Just a hint: we will be asked
to act out the parts of a plant using our bodies.
Hmm . . . if your head is un flor, what might your
feet be??
