We believe that everyone who would like to have a guide dog should have the opportunity, so they can enjoy the level of independence they want. The CNIB Guide Dog Program has been designed to provide the range of choices, services and opportunities that Canadians with sight loss have told us they want. CNIB Guide Dog Program Features Blindness is the only focus. o Guide dogs are entrusted with the safe mobility of their users. To be able to provide that, they receive more in-depth training compared to most other service dogs. o By focusing only on blindness, we can be sure of providing the highest quality guide dog partnerships. o CNIB's will be the only Canadian program to focus exclusively on training dogs to guide people who have sight loss. It starts with the dogs. o We will work with Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, and crosses of those two breeds, because they have a record of excellent performance as guide dogs. o Our puppies will be purchased from sources that have a proven record of superior quality in breeding guide dogs for people with sight loss. Training will be tailored to the needs of each guide dog partnership. o Our Guide Dog Mobility Instructors will provide training where it best meets the needs for the individual partnership and may include: domiciliary, residential or blended approached. o The goal is to provide a superior training model which will offer the most likely chance of success. o Training will be in English only. seeing beyond vision loss CNIB will provide follow-up support throughout the dog's working life. o The CNIB Guide Dog Program provides a full continuum of care for the dog and handler. From puppy-hood to retirement, CNIB will be there to support users every step of the way with continuing support. This will include: After-care visits from CNIB's travelling instructors Additional training if needed Vibrant in-person and online community of peers Guide Dog users will not pay for their dog, the training or the follow-up support. o CNIB is raising funds to cover the entire cost of the program. o The equipment, including the harness, will be loaned to handlers. o Standard vet services, such as flea, tick and heartworm medications, as well as an annual vet visit, will be fully covered throughout the dog's working life. CNIB will advocate with guide dog users to increase public awareness and break down barriers that infringe on their rights i.e. addressing concerns with guide dog in cabs/Uber cars. o We will address the built environment, as well as social attitudes to create universal accessibility, and understanding of the guide dog partnership.
