The reading calendar can be New News: I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. It is hard to believe that September is already here. We have had a great first two weeks of school. We are almost finished with our kindergarten review at the start the school year. We will be quickly moving on to new first grade information. Book bags began coming home today. In the book bag you have two pages of sight words, a reading calendar and a book at your child’s reading level. Please begin practicing your sight word pages each night for a few minutes. Some parents cut the words apart and use them like flashcards. This helps the students learn the words and not just the order of the words. These words need to be memorized. Each month I will send home two new pages of sight words to add to the ones you are already practicing until you have all 150 words. Please include this time as part of your reading practice time each night. colored in for each night of reading. It needs to be signed at the end of the month and returned to school by the first Friday of the new month for credit. Finally, your child’s book needs to be read three times. The first time, the book needs to be read aloud with an adult or older sibling. The second time, the book needs to be read aloud to an adult or older sibling. The third time, the book needs to be read silently to themself. I have received volunteer information from several of you. I have included scheduled volunteering times on the calendar. Please check over these times and make sure they work for you. If you have any questions or concerns about volunteering please let me know as soon as possible. I will assume that you want to work with a small group of students during your volunteer time. If you would prefer to work one-on-one with a student or do clerical type activities during your volunteer time, please let me know as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I will not schedule you to come in to work only with your child. It is a school policy that siblings do not come into the classroom during academic times. Siblings will not be able to come in with you during volunteering times. If you are unable to volunteer at your scheduled time, please let me know so I will not plan on you being in to help. “I Can” Statements I can make new words using word families. I can tell about the characters, setting and events in my story. I can tell you all the sounds that make up a word. Home Connection: Pick things around your house with simple names. Have your child stretch the word out saying each of the sounds in the word and then attempt to spell the word using the sounds. It is ok if they spell it incorrectly as long as they are hearing all the sounds in the word. Math: Reading: This month in reading, we are continuing to review all of our letters and sounds. We will begin to build our first grade sight words knowledge and vocabulary. We will work with short /a/ and /i/ words. The theme for the stories this month will be “All About Us” We are working on understanding numbers, counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, counting on and back to find numbers and using a number rack to quickly identify numbers. “I Can” Statements I can read, write and show my numbers to 50. I can write a number sentence with +,- and =. I can tell you the value of two coins using pennies and nickels. Home Connection: Ask you child to count items around your house by 2’s, 5’s or 10’s. If they cannot make another group of ten, have them count on by ones. For example: 10, 20, 21, 22,23 for counting a group of 23 items by 10’s.
