CALL TO ACTION – April 30 (IF YOU ONLY HAVE TIME TO DO 1 THING - DO THIS) Keep Fighting the Republican Threat to Repeal the ACA House Republicans are pushing a second version of their ACA repeal bill, “American Healthcare Act.” Since the new bill is even MORE draconian than their first try, The Republicans now have all the votes of the Freedom Caucus. It now comes down to the moderate Republicans to add more no votes – if they don’t, it will pass. The Republicans are trying to low key this one and sneak it by – it is getting far less media attention than the first time they tried. We can’t let them do that! We need our MOCS to hold press conferences now to get the word out on exactly how bad this new bills – 24 million were going to lose healthcare coverage last time – this will be worse. We don’t need to convince our MoCs to vote against – they are on board. We need to ask them to kick it up a whole notch higher and OPPOSE! Action: Call our MoCs and ask them to work with the media, hold press conferences, etc. to educate the public and put pressure on moderate Republicans to oppose the ACA repeal. Tell them to reach out to moderate Republicans and support them. Denny Heck (360) 459-8514 Patty Murray (253) 572-3636 Maria Cantwell (253) 572-2281 Both the House and Senate passed a 1-week extension last week. Now it repeats. If they cannot pass a 5-month budget by midnight Friday May 6, the Federal Government will close down. Our MoCs must NOT allow the budget to include either money for Trump’s ridiculous border wall, cutting out ACA subsidies, or defunding Planned Parenthood. Our MoCs must stand firm against Republican threats to shut down the government. IT IS BETTER TO SHUT DOWN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR A FEW DAYS THAN TO COMPROMISE AND ACCEPTS FUNDING THE WALL OR DEFUNDING THE ACA AND PLANNED PARENTHOOD. ACTION: Call our MoCs and ask them to stand firm on the budget and save the ACA (again) and Planned Parenthoood and reject the loser, un-American border wall. Investigate Trump’s Connections to Russia Investigations into President Trump’s connections to Russia seem to be stalled in Congress. An independent commission is needed for a full and complete investigation. Thanks to Senator Patty Murray for co-sponsoring Senate Bill 27, calling for “an independent commission to examine and report on the facts regarding the extent of Russian” influence in the 2016 presidential election. ACTION: Call our senators to thank them for their support of an independent investigation, and ask them to press for an investigation and to do more to bring more attention to this issue. Tell Representative Denny Heck to REJECT HR 1180 – Working Families Flexibility Act This bill allows private-sector, overtime-eligible employees to choose to be compensated for overtime with paid time off rather than the currently mandated time-and-a-half wages. It is a Republican backdoor attempt to undermine the Fair Labor Standards Act. From the Economic Policy Institute: The “Working Families Flexibility Act” (HR 1180)―also referred to as the comp time bill―would erode basic overtime protections for working people. The bill would allow employers to delay paying any wages for overtime work for as long as 13 months. Most lowor moderate-wage working people whose paychecks are not enough, would always prefer to work extra hours to receive extra pay. Under comp time, these employees give up their right to overtime earnings in exchange for the promise of future time off (but with no guarantee of taking leave when they need it). Expected to be voted on in the House sometime next week. ACTION: Denny Heck has not taken a public position on the bill. Call Denny Heck and tell him to stand against HR1180. Protect vital public services and comment on reorganization of the Executive Branch Background: President Trump plans to reorganize the Executive Branch. He plans to reduce or eliminate non-defense programs including the EPA (31% cut), State Department (28% cut), Corporation for Public Broadcasting, U.S. Trade and Development Agency, National Endowment for the Arts, and National Endowment for the Humanities. The president has requested your ideas and suggestions. ACTION: Choose one agency or program and post your comments on the Office of Management & Budget (OMB) webpage. Then go back the next day and post another agency. Do one a day (the list is long)! Select the agency/programs of concern from the menus.
