CBAA BASKETBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS
5TH & 6TH GRADE LEAGUE
1. For games 1-3 of the season all defense will be zone. For games 4-10, the 1st half is zone
defense and the 2nd half will be man-to-man defense, however, if a coach feels strongly that
their girls are not ready for man-to-man, zone can be played the entire game. You can play
any type of zone defense that you wish as long as you aren't double-teaming players (see
below).
2. Defense begins at mid court. There will be no defense in the back court unless defending
against a fast break during the 2nd half. Defensive players must allow the offensive team
over the mid court line. Teams may not hold the ball for more the 10 seconds. A violation
will result when the offense holds the ball for more then 10 seconds. Girls may switch
defenders (i.e. in a pick situation) or play help defense if a girl is beat as long as it does not
result in a double-team or trap.
3. Offense is not allowed to set double picks.
4. Fast breaks are allowed in the second half. The defense can defend against all fast breaks.
The defense must drop back if the rebounding player makes no attempt to fast break. If a
team goes up by 10 points, the coach should not allow their team to fast break. The other
team may continue to fast break. If the lead dips below 10 points, both teams can fast break
again. This is simply good sportsmanship and the officials will help remind coaches during
this situation.
5. No defense will be allowed above the three point line after a team has built a lead of 15 or
more points.
6. Pressing in the backcourt is only allowed in the LAST 2 MINUTES of the GAME. During
this time, the double-team/trap is allowed but only in the backcourt.
7. Backcourt violations will be called.
8. Three seconds in the lane will be called.
9. There are no three point shots. We would like to encourage ball movement and play making.
A shot made from behind the three point line will only count as 2 points regardless of the
score at the end of the game.
10. Girls must start behind the foul line for foul shots, however, they are not penalized if they go
over the line during the shot. Lane players may move on the release of the ball from the foul
shooter’s hand. The foul shooter may not rebound their own shot.
11. A team may play with 4 players. Games start no later than 5 minutes after the scheduled
time or 5 minutes after a game which has run over.

5TH & 6TH GRADE LEAGUE
12. Two 2-minute overtimes will be played in case of a tie. If a tie occurs at the end of the
second overtime the game will be considered a tie. In overtimes player rotations must
continue to balance the playing time.
13. BENCH RULE IS ENFORCED IN ALL PROGRAMS. One coach may stand during the
game unless the referee determines otherwise. All other coaches are to remain seated or a
technical foul will be called. Head coaches are responsible for control of players, their
assistant coaches and their team’s parents.
14. Uniforms are required for all games. No watches or other jewelry is permitted on players.
15. Please respect the rules established by the schools regarding refreshments and areas such as
the stage and rock walls within the gymnasium.
Playing Time Rule
Playing time is allotted in half-quarters (there are a total of 8 half-quarters in each game). The
playing time is distributed in the following manner:
- If 10 players present, all 10 players play four half-quarters
- If 9 players present, 4 players play five half-quarters and 5 players play four half-quarters.
- If 8 players present, all 8 players play five half-quarters.
- If 7 players present, 5 players play six half-quarters and 2 players play five half-quarters.
- If 6 players present, 4 players play seven half-quarters and 2 players play six half-quarters.
- If 5 (or 4) players present, all players play eight half-quarters.
In conjunction with the above allotment, each player must play at least one half-quarter in each
quarter.
The only exceptions to the above playing time rules are for injuries or other health-related issues,
players arriving late/leaving early, or players fouling out of the game. For injuries and foul-outs,
the replacement player must be from the group of players with the least scheduled playing time
(e.g. a player scheduled for four half-quarters in the case of a 9 player team). An injured player
may return during the same 3:30 minute half-quarter. Whether they return or not, the player that
started the half-quarter is the one who is “credited” with that half-quarter. It does not count
towards the substituting player’s playing time.
When a player arrives late or leaves early, the other players’ playing time should not be affected.
In other words, if you have 10 players and one has to leave at halftime, you cannot play them
four straight half-quarters in the first half to get them their “full game” playing time.
