B.C.'s New Curriculum
B.C.’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) education system is being modernized with new
curriculum. In the fall of 2015, we began the three-year process of transitioning to the new
curriculum.
During the 2015/16 school year, we introduced draft redesigned curriculum in Kindergarten to
Grade 9. Beginning in September 2016, students in K-9 learn the new curriculum only.
In the 2016/17 school year and 2017/18 school years, Grade 10-12 teachers are able to use either
the old or parts of the new draft curriculum. For the 2018/19 school year, the new curriculum
will be used in Grades 10-12. In addition to the redesigned curriculum, we are also updating
reporting and assessment practices. Those changes will be implemented between 2016 to 2018:
B.C. teachers and the Ministry of Education are working with experts in education design and
delivery – both locally and internationally – to develop this new system. A key goal is to provide
students with an education that is flexible and innovative. They’ll also gain the knowledge,
skills, and abilities they need to succeed in today’s world.
Another goal is making sure that teachers can deliver the curriculum efficiently and effectively.
The new system provides teachers with more time and flexibility to explore topics in depth with
students.

B.C.'s Curriculum Website
We are beginning a three-year plan to implement B.C.’s new curriculum in public and
independent schools. Full transition to the new K-9 curriculum began in September 2016,
Teachers may voluntarily use the 10-12 draft curriculum, in full or in part, in the 2016/17 and
2017/18 school years. Full transition to the new 10-12 curriculum will take place in September
2018.
