The “Sweet 16” – Post-secondary Paths T here is little doubt that our knowledge-based economy is demanding more education for workplace success. A growing number of students are feeling the pressure to get or upgrade a credential. Thankfully BC’s post-secondary system is not set based on a one-size-fits-all approach. This means that if you are wondering how to make the leap into post-secondary or return to learning there’s a way to do it. One of the following 16 16 PATHS may be your ticket to accessing a whole new world. 1. ADULT BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAM 6. DIRECT UNIVERSITY ENTRY Basic skills upgrading in reading, writing and Math to Grade 12 equivalency (i.e. -BC Adult Graduation Diploma). Enables high school students with appropriate secondary school courses and grades to directly enter university studies to pursue an undergraduate degree. 2. ADULT SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS 7. DISTANCE AND ONLINE LEARNING If you have learning difficulties or disabilities these programs are designed to help overcome barriers so you can reach your education & employment goals. An opportunity to learn from anywhere (i.e. home or office) at almost any time. 3. CAREER/VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS Practical training of up to three years that is geared to finding immediate employment in specific occupations. Helps learners with barriers reach employment goals. Instruction focuses on self-exploration and skill building for the workplace. 4. COMBINED ESL/CAREER PROGRAMS 9. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) An opportunity for second language learners to develop communication skills along with theory and practical skills for specific occupations such as culinary arts or hairstyling. PROGRAMS 5. CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS The opportunity to gain paid, practical work experience within many academic, career or technical programs. 8. EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION PROGRAMS Instruction focuses on ESL skills in speaking and listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing. Learning may be for personal growth or to transition into other postsecondary programs. 10. EXTERNAL OR STUDY ABOARD 14. TECHNOLOGY ENTRY PROGRAM Offers the opportunity to obtain credits towards your credential through international educational experiences. Offers academic preparation to enter technology programs at the post-secondary level. 12. GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT 15. TECHNICAL PROGRAMS (GED) Preparation and Testing— offers an avenue to prepare and successfully complete a Secondary School Equivalency Certificate. The GED is made up of five multiple choices tests in language arts writing, language arts reading, social studies, science and math. Offers practical instruction in mechanical or scientific fields of study. 13. PART-TIME STUDIES Designed to help you pursue your learning objectives during the day, evening or weekends. 16. UNIVERSITY TRANSFER STUDIES Enables you to complete first- and second-year university level work at a college or university before transferring to an undergraduate degree program at a different institution. The above list is not meant to be an exhaustive one. It is simply designed to show you that YOU HAVE OPTIONS . Often the hardest step for accessing post-secondary studies is the first one.
