Staff Handbook
WELCOME
Comber Grove has a wonderful, caring and creative tradition. Many of the teachers are trained in
music, drama and other creative arts and we believe that this plays a vital role in a child’s overall
education. Children at Comber have access to a wide variety of activities and interests including the
chance to learn a musical instrument at no extra cost.
Visiting practitioners are welcomed to our school and these include theatre groups, actors, musicians,
educational practitioners and sports coaches.
SCHOOL ETHOS
Children, staff and governors fully subscribe to the school ethos, which is built on the principles of
learning through a creative curriculum which encompasses the arts. The school is committed to
developing children’s academic and creative abilities.
Our aims are








To value and respect each other through our behaviour.
To practise and celebrate academic and creative achievements.
To celebrate the difference and cultural diversity of each human being.
To develop a broad vision of the wider world and foster love and care for the environment.
To help every child realise his or her full potential
To provide a learning environment which is welcoming, stimulating and nurturing and one
which builds competence and confidence.
To build strong and purposeful links with our parents/carers and local community.
To provide all staff with a healthy environment in which to work and to create opportunities for
their professional development.
Learning is taken from The National Curriculum (Sept 2014). Connections are made between subjects
to enhance the impact of the learning; while every effort is made to allow each child an equal
opportunity regardless of gender, ethnicity, ability or religion.
THE BUILDING
The school was built in 1877 and was called Leipsic Road School. The name was changed to
Comber Grove after WWII.
It is a beautiful old building on three floors. The Nursery and Infant department (KS1) are on the
ground floor and the juniors (KS2) are located on the second and third floors. There is a hall on each
floor; the lower hall is next to the kitchen and is used to serve school dinners. The top hall has a stage
which is used for productions and performances. We have a computer suite, music room and a
dedicated art room.
We have three separate playgrounds for each stage; Nursery, Infant and Junior. Each playground
has access to clean drinking water and play equipment.
There are two separate, secure entrances for juniors and infants at the front of the school. There is no
public or visitor parking at Comber Grove.
CLASSES
There are approximately 350 children at Comber Grove. Our classes are small and the average
number of children in each class is twenty four. They are named after theatres.
Most children join Comber Grove by attending our Nursery and we see this as a vital part of their
education. The Nursery children join in all the main functions and activities of the school. There is a
morning nursery and an afternoon nursery.
There are two classes per year group. There are no mixed age classes in the school.

STAFF MEETINGS AND COMMUNICATION
A weekly staff meeting is held every Wednesday from 3.40pm to 4.40pm and a shorter briefing is held
every Friday morning from 8.40am.
Details of the week and daily notices are written on the whiteboard in the staffroom. All staff are to
read this so they are aware of what is happening. There are also notices in the staff room regarding
children in the school with allergies, union notices and other relevant information. A yearly calender
and assessment calender is also displayed.
Timetables for classrooms and duties are displayed in the staffroom.
STAFF LATENESS
All staff should be in school in plenty of time to prepare for the working day. If you are going to be late,
please inform either Richard Dax or Hannah Johns.
STAFF ABSENCE
If you are ill and unable to come into work you should contact the head teacher (number) or the
deputy head teacher (number) as soon as possible (the evening before or, at the latest, by 7.30am,
so that cover can be organised). Please give an indication of how long your absence is likely to last. If
the illness is likely to be just a few days you should contact the school each day before 3.30pm and
let the deputy head teacher know if you'll be in the following day, as arrangements for cover have to
be made as early as possible. The first five days of an illness are self-certificated, after that a doctor’s
note is required. If a doctor’s note is issued it should be sent to school as soon as possible so that it
can be processed. If the illness spans a weekend, Saturday counts as one day of illness. On your
return to school, please complete a ‘Return to Work form’ which is available from the office. On return
to school, please see the deputy head teacher so she can speak to you about your absence or illness
and give you information about what cover was arranged. For additional information, please refer to
the Absence Management Policy stored on the school staff network.
STAFF COVER
PPA cover is carried out by our own staff and is taken in school in the designated areas.
REQUEST FOR LEAVE DURING TERM TIME
Staff who need to request leave must do so on the special leave form available in the office. Please
only request leave during term time in exceptional circumstances. Please note that term time holidays
for staff will not be agreed to.

Please aim to project a professional and modest image. You may also refer to the staff code of
conduct policy.

Teachers with login details have access to the Teachers shared folder, called Teachers Only (T:).
Here you will find a wealth of information regarding school policies, pupil progress etc.. Paper copies
of all policies, safeguarding procedures and all CPD opportunities are available from the staffroom.

TRAVELLING TO SCHOOL
Most children live very close to the school and walk with their parents. Older junior children may
travel alone if they have permission to do so from their parents. We encourage safe travelling and
children at Comber Grove undertake Road Safety work each year.
Junior children are allowed to cycle to school, if they have parental permission. We have a safe and
secure cycle storage unit with a locker for helmets. Infant children may scooter with their parents and
store their scooter in the cycle storage unit.
The bike shed is opened every morning at 8.30am, and again at 3.15pm by Scott Donovan, the
schools premises officer. If a visitor cycles in when the bike shed is not open, they will have to request
the key from the school’s secretary, Sandra Quilter.
LATE ARRIVALS
All late arrivals should go straight to the office to be marked in for dinner/ packed lunch and
attendance.
LATE COLLECTIONS
All children should be collected promptly at the end of the day in the infant or junior playground by a
designated adult. Please inform the school if the adult collecting your child changes on a regular
basis.
Children who have not been collected by 3.30pm should be brought to the school office until their
parent/carer or other designated adult arrives to pick them up.
REGISTRATION
Dinner registers are marked manually in the dinner register books by each class teacher, and brought
to the office by one or two children, chosen by the class teacher. The attendance register is marked
electronically, using the school database management system- Integris. Each class teacher will have
their own login details in order to do this.
FRUIT AND SNACKS
Fruit is available to all children. Teachers will nominate a monitor from the class to collect a bag of
fruit which is kept in the PE cupboard on the ground floor. Fruit is given to KS1 children when they
come back in from the morning playtime. KS2 children may be given their fruit just before they have
morning playtime.
SCHOOL RULES AND BEHAVIOUR
Comber Grove has six Golden Rules which underpin our behaviour system. Please see the poster
included in this pack. We review our school behaviour system and policy each year. We aim, through
a friendly and relaxed school atmosphere, to teach the children the value of self-discipline. We want
every child in the school to feel that they have an important part to play in making the school a lively,
interesting, but above all, safe place to learn in.
We operate a simple Time Out procedure at Comber Grove. If a child is unable to follow instructions
given to him/her by an adult, he/she is asked to think about and reflect upon their actions. If he/she
continues in the same manner then he/she will be asked to take time out. This may be within the
classroom or in another classroom. This usually resolves most problems, however if a child is
persistent in such behaviour, he/she will be taken to the head teacher or the most senior teacher
available. Serious incidents of inappropriate behaviour will result in contact being made with a
parent/carer.
The names of all children who are required to miss their break or lunch time because of poor
behaviour, should be recorded in the behaviour file in the school office. A reflection sheet should be
given to the child to complete during their detention.
PLAYTIME DUTIES
There is a rota kept in the staff room of members of staff who should be on duty.
All staff on duty should be in the playground when playtime begins, taking drink or toilet breaks before
hand.
If you are out of school (courses etc), please swap duties in advance with another member of staff. In
the event of staff absence, other members of staff will be requested to cover for that person.
Five minutes before the end of playtime, the teacher on playground duty will blow the whistle. This is
the time for children to go to the toilet if they need to and get some water from the drinking tap. When
the bell is rung/ or the whistle blown five minutes later, the children will stop what they are doing and
be instructed to put the balls, hula hoops and whatever they are playing with, back in to the toy shed
and line up quietly in their class lines. Children will stay in their lines until their teacher comes to take
them back inside.
WET PLAY/ LUNCHTIMES
The children stay in class until they are called for lunch. Every child will have a wet play book in which
they can draw/write etc. The class teachers can decide if the children are allowed to play with board
games etc and what equipment can and cannot be used. The children ask permission to go to the
toilet and one adult monitors between two classrooms apart from year 4 where the classes are too far
apart.
ACCIDENTS
Most accidents in school happen during playtime, and there are always at least two members of staff
present. Any injury in school must be checked, treated where necessary and parents informed.
Injuries such as bumps to the head, must be reported to the office so that treatment can be given, and
the child can be monitored. A list of First Aiders are displayed throughout the school.
EMERGENCY CONTACT
It is essential that we have each child’s current contact details on the school data base. We also
require an emergency contact number. At the beginning of each year, emergency contact forms are
sent to parents so that they may keep the school updated with accurate contact details. It is the
parent’s responsibility to inform the school, if there phone number or address changes at any time.
MEDICAL
Children must not bring medicine into school. If a child needs prescription medication during school
hours, parents should bring the medicine to the school office and complete the necessary permission
form. The medicine will be administered by a first aider. If your child suffers from asthma, a blue
asthma inhaler must be left in the school office.
ANAPHYLAXIS
There are children at the school who suffer with allergies likely to result in an anaphylactic reaction. A
labeled container with the epipen is held in the school medical cupboard with a photograph of the
children and details of their reaction. If the children are out of school on a school organized activity
(i.e. school trip), the epipen container must be taken by the teacher or accompanying first aider. The
school medical cupboard is located in the main office.
ASTHMA
Inhalers for those children with asthma should be named and stored in the medical cupboard. If the
children are out of school on a school organized activity (i.e. school trip), the inhaler must be taken by
the teacher or accompanying first aider.
HEAD LICE
If a child is discovered to have head lice, a letter should be sent out to the parents/carers of all the
other children in the class. Please let the school office know in order to send out letters.
HOLIDAY
Parents/Carers are asked to avoid arranging holidays in term time because every day out of school
for a child is a lost day of learning. If you wish to take a child out of school during term time you must
write a letter to the headteacher explaining the circumstances. Authorised absence during term time
will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and Southwark Education Authority will issue a
penalty notice of £60 for any child removed from school during term time for a second consecutive
year.
UNIFORM
Uniform is available to buy from the school office. A second hand uniform sale run by parents is held
each week in the junior playground.
Girls
Grey skirt, dress or trousers
Light blue shirt or polo shirt
Grey jumper or cardigan
Blue school summer dress
Boys
Grey trousers
Light blue shirt or polo shirt
Grey jumper or cardigan
All children should wear black school shoes.
Comber Grove PE Kits are also available to buy in the school office.
Navy blue shorts
Light blue T-shirt with Comber Grove logo.
Otherwise, children are expected to bring an alternative PE kit to school. This should be shorts or
tracksuit bottoms, T-shirt and plimsolls or trainers.
SCHOOL DINNERS
Children may eat a packed lunch or have one of our school dinners. Southwark provide school meals
free of charge to all children. Please ensure that your child’s packed lunch is healthy (no crisps, fizzy
drinks, chocolate or sweets) and includes a drink and fruit/vegetables. Our dinners are provided by a
private company; Accent Catering. Menu are displayed on school notice boards and on the school
website. You must inform the school of any allergies that your child may have.
LOST PROPERTY
We do our best to recover lost property, but please write your child’s name in each item of clothing so
that it can be clearly identified. Children must not bring money or expensive/electrical items into
school. If this is unavoidable, these items should be handed in to the class teacher at the beginning of
the day.
THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM
The National Curriculum was introduced in September 2014. The core subjects of English and Maths
are taught each day while the foundation subjects of ICT, PE, Science, Geography, History, Art,
Spanish, Design and Technology, RE, and Music are taught over a half term (6 weeks) or whole term
(12 weeks) programme. An overview is sent out each term together with a timetable of activities.
PROGRESS AND ASSESSMENT
There are three Open Evenings in the school year.
The first is in the Autumn Term (by appointment) and provides an opportunity for you to meet your
child’s teacher to discuss how he/she is settling in his/her new class and to set targets for the coming
year.
The second Open Evening is in the Spring Term (by appointment) and allows you to review your
child’s progress and to view class work.
The final Open Evening is at the end of the Summer Term and is an informal open classroom
session which allows children and their parents/carers to view and celebrate work and to discuss any
issues that have arisen.
If at any time during the school year, you are concerned about your child’s progress you must make
contact with your child’s class teacher or the headteacher to discuss your concerns.
A final end of year report is sent home in the Summer Term which reflects upon the work and
progress achieved.
COLLECTIVE WORSHIP
Collective Worship takes place twice a week at 10.20am until 10.40am where moral themes, and
celebrations are discussed. KS1 and KS2 will have separate collective worship during the week, but
on a Friday, the whole school will assemble to celebrate good work.
Class teachers are to accompany their class to assembly and sit with them throughout. Each class
should strive to attend on time and walk quietly to and from the assembly hall. Children are also
expected to sit quietly during collective worship.
MUSIC & DRAMA
Music and drama form an important part of our school curriculum. In KS2, children have the
opportunity to learn a musical instrument free of charge. Musical instruments and activities at Comber
Grove include; choir, guitar, violin, cello, trumpet, trombone, tenor horn, cornet, euphonium, clarinet,
flute, saxophone, African flute, keyboard, and percussion. These activities are taught by specialist
music teachers in the afternoons. The school also has its own orchestra. All children demonstrate
their musical skills in a performance for the school each academic term.
We place great importance on drama. Children have the chance to work with Blue Elephant Theatre
Company, Caboodle Arts Company, The Actors Company as well as performing each year in the
Shakespeare Schools Festival. A Christmas concert is performed as well as a summer show.
Children also have access to a wide range of visiting practitioners including actors, poets and visual
artists.
SPORTS
All children have Physical Education lessons throughout the week as part of the curriculum. Comber
Grove is part of the Bacon’s College network of schools and receives training and support from a wide
range of professionals. Children also take part in regular competitions throughout the borough. A
summer sports day is held each year in Myatt’s Field. All children are expected to participate in P.E
lessons to stay fit and healthy. A school P.E kit is available to purchase from the school office, for
children to wear during these lessons.
Children from year 1 to year 6 have the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons at a local
swimming pool. This is done on a rota system, over the course of a child’s time at Comber Grove.
HOMEWORK
We expect children to read at home every day and practice their spellings and times tables on a
weekly basis. We invite parents/carers to support their children in this. Additional homework will only
be given to children when it builds upon and strengthens their classroom learning. Occasionally,
children will be asked to research or to prepare work which will support an upcoming or current
project. Please visit our school website for our homework policy and for further support and ideas for
home learning.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
At the beginning of each term the extended schools coordinator will send a letter home to all
parents/carers indicating which clubs are available that term. Places are limited and are allocated on
a first come first served basis. There is a charge for some clubs, while others are offered free of
charge.
After school activities include; dance, ballet, music, drama, art, gardening, cricket, athletics, football,
hockey, gymnastics, table tennis, ICT, cookery, chess, maypole dancing, capoeira and many more!
SPECIAL EVENTS
Each year the school holds special events, these include: Christmas Show, Poetry Week, Year 6
Summer Production, Carnival, Summer Fair, Secondary Transition Talk, Music Performances and
Parent Workshops. Please check the weekly newsletter and the website for dates of these events.
SCHOOL BOOKS AND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Reading books and musical instruments are only allowed to be taken home on the understanding that
they will be replaced by the parent if damaged. Musical instrument consent forms are available from
the school office.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
We have a School Council at Comber Grove which is chaired by pupils and made up of children from
each year group. They contribute to the ideas and initiatives of the school and help to maintain a
pupil voice on all subjects.
PREFECTS
All children in year six are given the status of Prefect. They are expected to set the highest standards
of behaviour throughout the school and in return are allowed privileges such as being first into lunch
each day. Each prefect has a responsibility such as opening doors, delivering registers and helping in
the infant playground and lunch hall.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SEN)
Children learn and progress in different ways. At Comber Grove we have a celebrated and dedicated
support system for those children who need extra support in some or all aspects of their learning. We
will work closely with you to ensure that the correct support is put in place and that the best possible
progress is made. This may involve outside agencies and support groups. Individual Education Plans
are written for some children to address their individual needs and many intervention programmes are
in place to support children. Please see the Local Offer section of this document and our website for
further information.
EDUCATIONAL VISITS/CHARGING POLICY
During the school year, the children will have the opportunity to go on educational visits to places of
interest, both locally and further afield. By completing the emergency contact form at the beginning of
the year, your permission is for these visits is accepted although we will always do our best to inform
you when children are out of school. In order to do this we rely upon voluntary contributions from
parents/carers. No pupil will be excluded from a visit or activity because parents are unwilling or
unable to make a contribution. Please make contact with the school and we will endeavour to support
you.
SCHOOL JOURNEY
Year 6 children have the opportunity to participate in a week-long residential activity in the
Spring/Summer term while at Comber Grove. This is usually at an appropriate activity centre in the
UK and represents a life changing opportunity for many of our pupils.
THE SCHOOL GOVERNORS
The Governing body of Comber Grove contains Community, Local Authority, Staff and Parent
Governors. There is a list of governors available on the school website and a display on the name
staircase.
FRIENDS OF COMBER GROVE
Parents and carers are invaluable to Comber Grove and there are regular meetings held each term.
The support that they provide ranges from fund raising committees to homework support. Please
check the display boards, website and weekly newsletters for further information and how you can get
involved.
NEWSLETTER
Communication between school and home is essential. A weekly newsletter is sent home every
Friday.
