Introduction
We have a clear vision of what we want our company to look
like by the end of our eight-year price control period in 2021.
Our strategy outlines what we want to achieve, how we want to
achieve it and what we’re prioritising this year to get us there.
The four components of our strategy (our vision, our strategy themes, our values
and our priorities) are working together to make sure that gas is a vital part of
the UK energy solution beyond 2021.

About us
We operate over 74,000km of gas mains and services in
Scotland and the south of England. Whoever your supplier
is, we have a responsibility to deliver gas safety, reliably and
efficiently to every one of our 5.8 million customers.

Our strategy themes are the four key areas that our
business is focused on to help us achieve our vision
and address the issues raised by our stakeholders.
These are detailed in our Stakeholder Engagement
Strategy.
Our values show how we believe in operating as a
company.
Our priorities are what we’re focused on delivering
in the upcoming year based on external and internal
influences including; regulatory commitments, targets,
financial drivers and responding to changes in policy
etc.
Our priorities are reviewed at the end of every
financial year and approved by our Board of Directors.

What we’re focusing on in 2015-16
Supporting actions include:
Energy affordability
Our stakeholders have told us that the cost of energy
is one of their highest concerns.
We’re reducing our impact on customer energy costs.
• Maximising the efficiency of our regulated
activities to drive cost savings back to our
customers
• Tackling fuel poverty through our Help to Heat
strategy
• Developing relationships with powerful
stakeholders to influence policy change
Security of supply
• Attending more than 97% of gas escapes within
an hour (or two hours if safe to do so)
Keeping the gas flowing is key to our day-to-day
activities.
• Continuing to reduce the number of properties
using gas that are not registered with a gas
supplier
We’re continuing to invest in our network to meet
the standard of service that our customers expect.
• Making sure our data is accurate as this is
important for the decisions we make via our new
Data Governance Committee
Using our pipes
• Greening the gas by working towards supplying
250,000 homes with biomethane by 2021
Adapting how we work will ensure we have a
sustainable future.
• Investigating the development of heat networks
We’re reviewing alternative options for delivering
energy beyond natural gas through our pipes.
Technology and innovation
Innovation underpins our long-term company
strategy.
We’re always looking for ways to do things better.
• Investigating emerging alternative sources of gas
(i.e. synthetic gas, hydrogen, decarbonisation
etc.)
• Progressing our Network Innovation Competition
funded projects, Opening Up the Gas Market and
Robotics
• Using innovative technologies, such as CISBOT
and Core and Vac, to maintain our network
efficiently
• Reviewing the long-term strategy of our company
under our Transformation Project
People and communities
Developing a strong workforce and building
relationships with local communities is important
to us.
We’re investing in our people and the communities
we’re working in.
• Implementing the Trailblazer Apprenticeship
Scheme to get the right people for the next
generation of our workforce
• Improving our level of employee engagement by
increasing the career development, diversity and
expertise of our people
• Dedicating 0.5% of our profits to engaging with
local communities
