Polls Agree - Bartlett Cannot Win in November
Democratic and Republican Polls Both Have Bartlett Under 43%
January 30, 2012 (Frederick, MD) — A January poll commissioned for the benefit of Democratic candidate
for Congress Rob Garagiola reports similar numbers to a December poll commissioned by Republican
Roscoe Bartlett. Both polls have Bartlett’s support capped at no higher than 43%. In fact, Bartlett has
dropped 4% in just the last month.
Garagiola’s poll, commissioned by Democratic House Majority PAC found that the incumbent received
just 39% approval rating, with fewer, only 37% of voters believing Bartlett deserves another term. Just as
concerning, 60% would prefer someone different.
These latest numbers represent a 4 percent slide from the 43% support Bartlett had in December. Bartlett’s
own poll results make him one of the most at-risk Congressman in the country. Most concerning is his lack
of support among Republican primary voters. The Congressman’s poll showed a majority of Republican
primary voters were supporting someone else.
While neither campaign released the details of their polls or their methodology, there’s no denying that both
appear to spell trouble for the 20-year incumbent.
These poll results quantify what Republican leaders have known for months—Roscoe Bartlett cannot win
another term.
“We didn’t need polls to tell us what we have been hearing from constituents for months,” offered Senator
Chris Shank, Brinkley’s Washington County Chair. “This is why so many elected officials are supporting
Brinkley.”
Historical results indicate that a Republican can win, but both polls suggest that the incumbent cannot. If
the GOP believes it can capture the White House because President Obama is polling in the high 40s, they
can’t say they will keep this seat with Bartlett polling in the low 40s. “You can’t have it both ways,” Shank
said of the inconsistency.
Senator Brinkley enjoys the support of a long list of elected officials endorsing his bid, including: State
Senators George Edwards, Chris Shank, Joe Getty, Alan Kittleman; JB Jennings and Minority Leader
E.J. Pipkin; State Delegates Wendell Beitzel, LeRoy Myers, Kelly Schulz, Don Elliott, Susan Krebs,
Tony McConkey and Donna Stifler; Mayor Randy McClement of Frederick and Mayor Bob Bruchey
of Hagerstown, Washington County Commissioner Jeff Cline, Cumberland Councilwoman Mary Beth
Pirolozzi, former Senator Jean Roesser, former Delegates Rick Weldon and Charles Jenkins and Montgomery
County Republican Central Committee Chair Mark Uncapher.
