Position Announcement
Preschool Cook
Objective: To provide healthy, developmentally appropriate, and tasty food for preschoolers in a center-based
setting according to Head Start Performance Standards and other state or local laws. Cook reports to
Preschool Program Administrator.
Duties and Responsibilities:







Establish and Maintain Effective Working Relationships with Children, Parents, Staff and Community
Members: Participate as Primary Care Team member; maintain confidentiality; encourage team work; support
other team members; demonstrate active listening skills, positive communication and conflict resolution
strategies; participate in program and self-evaluation; act as an advocate for Head Start within the community.
Plan and Prepare Age-Appropriate Snacks and Meals for Enrolled Children: Menu preparation, shopping
for groceries and supplies, cooking, transporting of food, appropriate food storage and clean-up.
Maintain Accurate, Thorough and Timely Documentation of Activities and Outcomes: Keeps menu, meal
and attendance records, as well as any plans, activities, and outcomes of all key result areas in ways that document
Performance Standards and CACFP compliance, including maintaining CACFP records and producing CACFP
reports.
Participate as Needed and Directed in Classroom Activities: As directed, participate in the implementation of
daily schedule (as available) that may include small and large group times, free choice activity centers, mealtimes,
healthy routines, observations, and interaction with children throughout the day.
Involve Parents in the Program: As directed, supports Parent Committees and family activities such as Family
Fun Events, communicates with parents, encourages classroom participation, seeks input from parents for menus,
and contributes to classroom newsletter.
Participate in On-Going Professional Development: Attends in or out of county training, conferences, or
classes, as appropriate.
Other Duties as Assigned: May include supporting the implementation of special projects or grants, becoming
cross-trained in other program areas, program monitoring, substituting in classrooms, and any other activity
necessary to support IMACA operations.
Minimum Required Qualifications:











Must be 18 years of age or older
Have experience and interest in institutional cooking and working with preschoolers
Previous experience preparing and serving food in a group setting
Complete 3 units in Early Childhood Development Health, Safety and Nutrition (within six months of hire)
Obtain Serve-Safe certification before end of Introductory period (six months of hire)
Ability to recognize and effectively respond to the physical, intellectual, and emotional needs of preschool
children
Possess excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with a culturally diverse
population.
Ability to interpret and apply rules, policies, and regulations with good judgment in a variety of situations
Computer proficiency - including word processing, data entry and spreadsheets
Ability to compile and prepare accurate reports
Able to work within established budget guidelines







Able to work with minimum supervision, and balance and prioritize multiple tasks
Able to deal tactfully & courteously with persons seeking information and expressing concerns about program
policies and procedures
Able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
Able to attend out-of-the-area meetings, workshops, and trainings, as required
Pass fingerprint check and have clearance records filed with the State Department of Social Services and
Community Care Licensing
Possess valid California Driver’s License, have a good driving record, and be insurable by IMACA
Be in good health and pass all medical requirements (TB skin test or chest x-ray, basic physical, and
have proof of MMR immunization and a current DTaP immunization)
Preferred Qualifications:


Bilingual (Spanish/English)
Knowledge of the Head Start/State Preschool programs and familiarity with Head Start Performance Standards
