Basic Spots, that is Basic Spot • Depends on the play • Could be – Previous spot – Succeeding spot – End of the run – Goal line – 20-yard line • Do not always enforce from the basic spot Dead Ball Fouls • Prior to the snap – Basic spot = previous spot • After the end of a play – Basic spot = succeeding spot – Includes all unsportsmanlike fouls and nonplayer fouls Live Ball Fouls • Concurrent with the snap – Basic spot = previous spot • Loose ball plays – Basic spot = previous spot • Running Plays – Basic spot = end of the run • All but one Principal: Fouls by the offense behind the basic spot enforced from spot of foul Loose-Ball Play Definition A loose-ball play is action during a. A free kick or scrimmage kick other than postscrimmage kick fouls. b. A legal forward pass. c. A backward pass (including the snap), an illegal kick or fumble made by A from in or behind the neutral zone prior to a change of team possession. d. The run or runs which precedes such legal or illegal kick, legal forward pass, backward pass or fumble.
