The Purpose The Pledge What are we seeking to do: What is my role in this? As a member of the St Andrew’s Congregation you are invited to give sacrificially what you believe is right in your heart. Supporting this project will enable our ministries to grow and help our vision to share Jesus’ hope in our area. Research confirms that the majority of funds will come from our own congregation. Our vision is to make St Andrews a warm and welcoming space to facilitate church and community life for the next generation. The features are: INTERNAL Enhancements to the worship area within the main church building, probably to include layout, floor levels/covering, seating, heating, ventilation, toilet, entrances, insulation and foul/surface water drainage. Removal of the choir stalls that are rarely used. Increasingly services and events are compromised by their presence. The rear of the church is felt to be unwelcoming and fragmented and the parish wish to create a new more attractive west entrance, with glazed doors, which will be DDA compliant. The existing side porches would be used to house a single disabled toilet with baby changing facilities and possibly a kitchenette. The only means of escape are at the west end of the building, particularly as there are large numbers of families and children at the Christmas services. There is a blocked door in the side chapel that could be opened up to provide an alternative escape route. LINK BUILDING A new building scheme to link the church and two halls, to provide a single point of entry for visitors and a reception area. The new area would be welcoming, high quality, light, bright and visible from the main road. It would also be DDA compliant, unlike the current vestry entrance. ROAD LAYOUT The road within the site passes immediately outside the main, double, west doors of the church to the car park area. There is concern regarding safety of people exiting through the west doors of the church and also issues when wedding and funeral cars need to park by the door. The green in front of the church would allow the construction of a new road some 5-10m west of the existing one, allowing the creation of a pedestrian area in front of the doors. There are some mature trees but none of them have Tree Preservation Orders and several are in poor condition. Who will benefit from this vision and how can a building be an effective tool for reaching the community? Our vision is to create a contemporary resource for the wider Burgess Hill community from toddlers to teenagers from families to seniors- and everyone in between. This is your opportunity to make a wise investment for current and future generations. Are we eligible for funding from grant making trusts? We have already received confirmation that an application to a trust fund for up to £250K, has been successful providing we at least match this amount ourselves through donations and interest free loans. At the planning stage we will be seeking further fundraising from other possible funders. What happens to my gift if the building does not go ahead? All donations towards the building project will be held in designated accounts. So the funds can only be used for that purpose. In the event the project does not proceed further, the PCC will ask donors if they wish to have unspent monies returned to them. What happens to the money given if we raise too much? Any surplus funds would be allocated to a restricted fund for ‘fabric’ i.e. running and repair costs of the buildings on site. Will we need planning permission for the project? We will be seeking planning approval as soon as we are in a position to present a definitive scheme. This is expected to be in Spring 2014, when this has been granted it normally remains valid for a period of 3 years. When will the building work start? We aim to have 80% of the overall cost pledged by members, committed by grant-making bodies and raised elsewhere by the Autumn of 2014. This will enable us to tender and contract for the building work to start during 2015 and complete in 2016. How confident are we that the cost will keep to £800K If we can start building within the next 2-3 years, we are confident that costs for construction work should remain very competitive. The Architect has recommended using a Cost Consultant and the Project Team will, using their expertise, apply “value engineering” principles. Should we be giving a percentage to our mission partners? The PCC will be considering how we can also benefit the people in mission and projects we support as part of our building project. The Difference What to do next? What difference will the building project make? The central hub (link building) will provide increased space for welcome and hospitality on Sundays and during the week. The whole church will be much warmer, lighter and brighter for church and community use. The road layout will increase safety for pedestrians on site with better spaces to play, and much better access. Clergy, staff and pastoral team will have space to work and interact, strengthening relationships and communication at the heart of the Church. Currently most of them work from their homes. There will be easy to access disabled facilities with baby change unit inside the church building, rather than having to go outside. Visitors to the site will be able to find their way to one main accessible entrance easily! Our pastoral and staff team will have space to offer care and counsel on site. A place where every member of the St Andrew’s congregation can meet and bring friends to experience new life in Jesus Our ministry among schools, youth and music societies will be better facilitated and our premises more suited for additional community usage including those with mobility problems. Opportunity for God’s Kingdom’s work to be done 7 days a week for generations to come to the Glory of God, across the site including the church building itself. The plan “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain” Psalm 127:1 This project will need the involvement of everyone at St Andrew’s Prayer: Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him – Psalm 37:7 Because nothing of lasting worth will happen without prayer we must pray about every aspect of it. Sacrifice: I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God offerings that cost me nothing – 2 Sam 24:24 A sacrificial gift is one that will make an impact on you and may involve giving something up, a change in lifestyle, or re-thinking priorities. For many it may involve a commitment over a few years. The challenge will be different for each person. So we do not seek equal giving, but equal sacrifice as illustrated in the story of the widow’s priceless gift of her last two coins – Mark 12: 41-44 The Project St Andrew’s Congregational Pledge Information Leaflet A Church for the next generation…. Giving: Jesus said, Freely you have received. Freely give – Matthew 10:8 Give Thankfully – Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him – Colossians 3:17 Give Cheerfully – Each should give what he has decided to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver – 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Give First – Seek first His kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you – Matthew 6:33 God’s part in the building project at St Andrew’s The foundation on which the whole venture rests is God. It is He who can take what we place in His hands and use it to bring the project to completion. It is He who will go with us on the journey and build us up in faith and love. “Fundraising is proclaiming what you believe in, and proclaiming it in such a way that you offer the other person an opportunity to participate in your vision so it is precisely the opposite of begging.” Henri Nouwen
