WELCOME
TO
GREY COLLEGE HOCKEY
2017
School History
In 1855 Sir George Grey visited the Orange Free State while he was the governor of the Cape
Colony. On 13 October 1855, he donated a sum of money towards
the establishment of an institution for higher education. This money
contributed largely to the capital investment in Grey College and on
17 January 1859 the school opened its doors for the first time, with
Andrew Murray as the first headmaster.
Over the years Grey College and Bloemfontein grew and developed
together under the leadership of headmasters Dr Johannes Brill,
James Lyle, Jock Meiring, J.M.B. Faure, A.K. Volsteedt, J.L. Cronje, Dr
M.G. Heyns and Johan Volsteedt. Deon Scheepers was appointed in
2013 as the headmaster of Grey College Secondary school.
Grey College is one of the best-known schools in the country, and was awarded the best
SCHOOL in AFRICA in 2014; and is proud of countless learners who have achieved success in
all walks of life.
These Old Greys are successful in South Africa as well as in other countries, and contribute to
the excellent reputation that Grey College has established over the years. Loyalty to Grey
traditions is a hallmark of the Grey boys. The traditions and image of Grey College unite the
learners and establish a strong brotherhood.
Grey Hockey’s Brotherhood will represent the bonding of the boys of various backgrounds,
beliefs and places around a singular set of life-directing commitments. We want to build
friendships unlike any other, built out of respect and love, boys who will always have each
other’s backs.
The new Grey Hockey Turf was opened on 3 August 2001.
Grey College is known nationally and internationally for our sporting prowess. The school
was awarded with the best school in Africa Award in 2014.
Many of our teams are rated amongst the top 3 sporting teams in the country.
The year 2016 was no exception and our 1st XV rugby team ended 2nd (second in the country).
Our aim is to elevate hockey to the same levels of excellence.
HOCKEY AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Hockey was introduced as a sport at Grey College in 1920. The first official photograph was
taken then.
Grey College has approximately 156 players who are actively involved with the game, we
could have more but the manpower is our main problem. Coaches are needed to uplift the
game even more.

THE CHILD WELFARE PROJECT / GREY HOCKEY
The child Welfare project that we run is in line with promoting relationships with the
privileged and under-privileged.
The concept is as follows:
The school is sponsoring Child Welfare through silent investment companies that allocate
money towards the project. The money is then donated by how many goals are scored during
the season by the First Team. Therefore, the First Team has to play their hearts out in order
to supply the full amount to Child Welfare. Educationally the boys are being taught to play for
something bigger than themselves. The boys are also taken to the Free State Child Welfare
Satellite station where they meet the other kids and they get to interact with one another.
Also, Child Welfare is invited to every Hockey Derby day where they receive cold drinks and
burgers and watch hockey on their own private stand. We believe in the relationship and
hope to keep Child Welfare on board for the years to come.

HEAD OF HOCKEY
Grey Hockey is led by a very passionate young man, Wayne Coetzee, who started his
coaching career in 2004 in England.
He started his working career with Grey College in 2013, where he was appointed Head of
Hockey, Head Conditioning Coach Hockey as well as the Coach of the 1st Hockey team.
Grey Hockey has reached new heights under his leadership. He coaches his team with his
personal motto “Better people, make people better!”
He has also been appointed as Chairman of Southern Free State Schools Hockey and coaches
the Southern Free State u/18 Hockey side. He was Assistant Coach during 2016 when the
U/16 Southern Free State side won the IPT – B Section.
BROTERHOOD HOCKEY PROGRAMME
We have started a brotherhood programme whereby the Senior First Team Squad players
have been helper coaches at the primary school off-season training programme.
The Brotherhood programme will go one step further as 2017 begins and the First Team gets
finalised. This step will occur with each First Team member getting a u/14 and a u/16 player
to look after for the season. They need to watch one another’s games and look out for one
another on and off the hockey field.
As Hockey, might been seen as a small sport, we are trying to show the boys that small sports
can have big hearts, and a family that cares for one another, is a family that will reach the
ultimate heights of success.
Ryan McLaren has also been appointed as the patron of Grey Hockey from 1 January 2017 to
December 2019.
As we all know he is a South African Cricket player. He played hockey and cricket at Grey
College and captained the 1st Hockey team.

NETHERLANDS AND BELGIUM HOCKEY TOUR SEPTEMBER 2017
Grey College selected a squad of 33 players (Development team) to go on a 12 day overseas
tour to the Netherlands and Belgium in 2017.
Why a tour of this nature?
Because travel is really the university of life!
In an interview at the 2004 US Senior Open Gary Player said: “I love people, and I love travel.
I find it … well, it’s without a question the best education that one can obtain, better than any
college degree or university.”
PRICE PER HOCKEY PLAYER – R32 900 (without visa and spending money)
The tour will include 5 hockey matches per team against local teams in the Netherlands and
Belgium and 2 coaching sessions by professional Dutch coaches.
It is a great opportunity for the squad to grow as a team as well as individually.
