Position Title: Cruise Director Reports To: Hotel Director Direct Reports: Activity Manager Youth Program Manager Production Manager Dance Captain Broadcast Manager Entertainer Interactive Television Specialist Band Master (CN & HZ Class) A/V Manager (CN & HZ Class) POSITION SUMMARY This position has overall responsibility for Activities Staff, Enrichment Staff, Youth Staff, Musicians, Headline Entertainers, Production Performers, Production Manager, AudioVisual Manager, Sound and Light Staff, Video Programmers, Broadcast Manager, ITV Specialist, (Computer Trainer and Golf Pro, for programming only). ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES To support Celebrity Cruises’ mission of sustaining “the world’s ultimate premium cruise line with a taste of luxury,” all duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Celebrity Cruises’ Pillars of Safety, Service and Style, ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental regulations. Each shipboard employee may be required to perform all functions in various service venues and throughout the ship. 1. In accordance with Celebrity Cruises’ Pillars of Safety, Service and Style, as well as through Celebrity Connections, each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests or fellow shipboard employees and/or in the presence of guest contact and Celebrity Family Member (CFM) areas. 2. Directs, coaches, supports, supervises and evaluates (in conjunction with the Hotel Director) the performance of all direct reports. 3. Responsible for all policies, procedures and programming of activities relating to the smooth and efficient operation of the Cruise Program. 4. Ensures that guest entertainment and activities are carefully integrated with all product offerings aboard the ship. Takes advantage of cross promotion opportunities. Responsible for liaising with other department heads to create synergy in order to provide the best overall product and resultant ratings and maximize revenue. 6. Responsible for guiding his/her team to develop activity programming sensitive to guest demographics and itinerary fluctuations. 7. Prepares a Cruise Director’s Report (in memo form) at the conclusion of each voyage, and sends the report via Email to shore side. 8. Ensures that the accounts, records and reports for which he/she is responsible are completed and submitted to shore side on a timely basis. 9. Responsible for the training and counseling of all the staff under his/her supervision. 10. Communicates to guests the landing procedure for each port. 11. At the Master’s request, assists at entertainment functions. 12. Responsible for the effective administration of the ordering and distribution of guest gifts and prizes. 13. Provides the proper promotion of Bingo in order to achieve and/or exceed revenue targets. Ensures that Bingo is entertaining to the guests and conforms to the format and controls as outlined by the company. 14. Monitors production shows, variety shows, musicians, lectures and activities to gain a firm awareness of each, to include strengths, as well as areas that may need further attention for improvement. 15. Monitors all technical areas within his/her department through continued communication with all technical sub-department managers, i.e., Production Manager, AV Manager, Broadcast Manager and ITV Manager. Should maintain continued awareness of any technical deficiencies or problems that may exist in the department. 16. Responsible for the care and maintenance of all equipment in his/her care, including the library books, movies, DVDs, karaoke CD+Gs, CDs, etc. 17. Ensures that guests receive high-quality, effectively scheduled, prompt and wellpresented entertainment. Ensures that guests are given the pleasant attention and effective service expected of his/her staff. These duties and services are to be carried out in accordance with brand standards. 18. Furnishes, at the request of the Hotel Director, budget proposals covering the accounts for which he/she is responsible. Maintains a thorough record of all expenditures and base requirements. Submits Requisition lists to the Hotel Director for approval. 19. Assures that volume levels throughout the vessel are at an acceptable level. This includes the public address system, background music throughout the ship, Cruise Director Job Description Page 2 of 5 orchestra and band amplification, and the entertainer’s/production cast’s amplification during a performance. 20. Notifies the entertainers, whether resident ship staff or outside contracted entertainers, verbally or in writing, the company policy for the dress code and the use of relative lounges and facilities on all ships. 21. Upon signing off for transfer or vacation, the Cruise Director is required to complete a performance evaluation on all CFMs in the Cruise Director’s division. However, a Cruise Director must have worked with the CFM for a minimum of six weeks before evaluating him/her. 22. Upon signing off for transfer or vacation, provides a thorough, written handover report to the incoming Cruise Director. 23. Prepares an evaluation when a CFM disembarks for vacation or is transferred. Again, the stipulation is that the Cruise Director must have worked with the CFM for a minimum of six weeks. 24. Understands the Safety & Quality Management Program, and his/her responsibilities in the Safety Organization according to the Emergency Plan and Station Bill. Must be available, capable and ready to act in the event of an emergency. 25. Is aware of and/or acquires the necessary knowledge to comply with the ship’s standard operation, in order to assist guests and CFMs with inquiries. 26. Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all other work-related activities as required. 27. Performs related duties as required. Shipboard employees will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management. FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Financial responsibilities for budget, expenses and/or achievement of revenue targets. § This position is responsible for cost containment through the proper use, handling and maintenance of records, reports, supplies and equipment. § Manages and maintains departmental finances within budgetary requirements. § Reviews requisitions from his/her staff and forwards to Hotel Director for final approval. Requires the items be requisitioned in correct quantities, within acceptable timeframes and in accordance with established control procedures. Conducts spot checks to ensure items are correctly stored to minimize deterioration and waste. Monitors the assignment of duties and responsibilities of his/her staff. Observes and evaluates them and their work procedures to ensure quality standards and service are met. Makes recommendations regarding personnel actions such as new hire requests and discharges, to ensure adequate and continuous staffing. Inspects workstations, work areas, equipment, etc. to ensure efficient service and conformance to standards. § Conducts motivational and teambuilding activities with shipboard teams as required. § Mentors, develops and provides on-the-job training to his/her staff to strengthen their current performance and preparation for future advancement. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum hiring, language and physical requirements to perform the job. Hiring Requirements: § Minimum of five years experience in an upscale hotel, resort, cruise ship, entertainment or recreational industry (shipboard experience preferred). § Master of Ceremony or professional entertainment experience and skills required. § Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, business administration or related field from an accredited college or university or the international equivalent preferred. § Very strong management skills in a multicultural and dynamic environment. § Excellent communication, problem solving, decision making, and interpersonal skills. § Superior customer service, teambuilding and conflict resolution skills. § Strong planning, coaching, organizing, staffing, controlling, and evaluating skills. § Intermediate computer software skills required. § Possess a good understanding of numbering flow “Debits/Credits”, adjusting entries and corrections. Internal Candidate Requirements: In addition to the stated hiring requirements, internal candidates are required to fulfill the following: Cruise Director Job Description Page 4 of 5 § Completion of at least one contract as an Assistant Cruise Director with a performance rating of satisfactory or above along with demonstrated leadership skills. Language Requirements: § Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests. § Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and coworkers. § Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, French or German preferred. Physical Requirements: § While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the employee at times works in outside weather conditions that are extreme. These include exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. § All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
