PUMPKIN PATCH
READY….SET….PUMPKINS!!!
It’s that time of year again!
PUMPKINS ARE COMING!! Time to
get ready for our church’s biggest fund raiser! We need
pallets, the grass needs to be cut short prior to Oct. 1st,
and Volunteers need to step up to the plate! Our
pumpkins arrive on Sunday, October 2nd! Be sure to
wear clothes you can get dirty in (or bring a change), as
we will be unloading our precious pumpkins right after
the 11am service. There will be a pizza lunch provided!
Every Friday afternoon at 4pm, we will have Storytime
in the Patch with Richmond Fire Dept.’s Station 16.
This was a fun event last year, and well attended by
school & neighborhood children!
Oct. 8th: Shalom Farms Farmer’s Market! 9:30am
until it sells out!
Oct. 15th: Drum Circle Night! 7pm. Come play and
sing praises to God, enjoy a bowl of chili & roast up
some s’mores around the campfire while we have
fellowship together! You can bring anything to play: if
you don’t have a drum, boxes & buckets make good
drums; acoustic guitars, shakers & tambourines & the
like are also welcome! And the chili isn’t spicy unless
you make it that way, so everyone can find something to
enjoy on Drum Circle Night!
Oct. 22: Brunswick Stew! Our own Gary Taylor is
going old school: cooking outdoors, with a big black
cauldron and everything! We are taking orders NOW for
quarts of delicious, homemade Brunswick stew. Cost is
$10 per quart. Pick up will begin on the 22nd when it’s
finished. We’ll need extra help that day!
Oct. 29: Movie Night in the Patch! Fun Family Fare
to get ready for Halloween Tricks or Treats! 6:30pm in
the Patch. Dress appropriately for the temperature; kids
are welcomed to come in their pajamas. If it turns out to
be a wet night, we’ll show the movie downstairs in the
social hall
Oct. 31st: Our End Of Pumpkin Patch Celebration!
As we close up the last sales that night, the Trick or
Treaters will already be out there on the prowl for candy.
We celebrate the end of the Pumpkin Patch season with
candy bags for the kids, hot cider for the adults! PLUS:
we also give away winter coats! Please come help out
that night; it can get pretty fast ‘n furious on Seminary
Ave! (Volunteers should park in the church parking lot).
We need coat donations, too! All sizes, kids through
adults, male & female. Coats need to have all their
buttons, zippers & snaps in good working order, and be
clean.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SUNDAY
On Sept 11th, during both worship
services, we will observe Christian
Education Sunday and the
Blessing of the Backpacks. This
is a chance for prayers to be given
to all educators and students as
they embark on a new school year.
AIR CONDITIONING UPDATE
An old pipe was recently replaced by Harris Mechanical
Services Inc. The major part of this repair (about
$10,000) is the cost of replacing the R-22 which is
estimated to be about 200lbs @ $50 per pound! If you
would like to donate towards the $13,000 amount, please
make out your check to Ginter Park UMC and mark it
“air conditioning.” Whatever you are able to contribute
will be gratefully received! As of Sunday, August 7th,
we have received $2,460 towards the repair.
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
This year’s Blessing of the Animals
Service will be held on October 15th at
5:30pm. Please bring your pet for a
special service and blessing by our
pastor. Welcome: All Creatures Great
and Small!
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Taylor Snow and Katherine Lowder
on their marriage which will take place on October 8th at
Ginter Park United Methodist Church.
THANK YOU
The next time you are in the sanctuary, look at the
beautiful stained glass windows adorned with our
NEW battery operated candles. The Candles are
a gift from Barbara and Horace Ford. Please
say a special Thank You to them for making
our window decorations beautiful and Safe.
STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY
Stewardship Sunday is planned for November 13th.
We will once again receive the challenge to take
one step up in our giving.
CHARGE CONFERENCE
Charge Conference for Ginter Park UMC will be on
November 6th at 2:00 p.m. at the Virginia Conference
Center located at 10330 Staples Mill Rd, Glen Allen,
VA 23060.
SOFTBALL TEAM
"The Prodigals finished up their seventh season on
Tuesday August 2nd after a season
filled with rain. A total of seven
weeks were rained out this year!
All but one week was made up.
Their regular season record does
not really reflect the skill of the
team; they played a lot of close
games while going 3-11. They
breezed through their first playoff game, and lost game 2
by a hair. In the second round of the playoffs (after 2
weeks delayed due to MORE rain) they played an
amazing game against the 4th seed team but suffered a
heartbreaking last inning loss after coming back from a 6
run deficit.
We hope to continue getting better next season as most
of our players are planning on returning. We are always
on the look out for new talent, men! If you are interested
in playing next season, contact Chris Otto at
[email protected]. We also plan on continuing
Men's Fellowship throughout they year; keep an eye on
the newsletters and bulletins for more information on
that soon.
Thank you all for your continued support!"

Help Needed for Closing Church on
Sundays
We had an unfortunate episode after Sunday worship
recently when our buildings were left unsecured with
doors left unlocked, lights burning, and the sanctuary
sound system left on. Needless to say, the alarm was not
set either. This situation prevailed until
our janitor arrived on Monday
morning along with the staff of the
Bon Secours Care-a-Van.
We are seeking willing individuals
who will volunteer to secure the building after worship
on Sundays. Looking ahead, we have nobody to do this
during this current month of August, and then in
September and November. If you are willing to do this
important task, please speak to the Pastor or call the
Church Office.
FOOD PANTRY
Due to a substantial reduction this Summer in the
amount of food available from USDA, the GPUMC
Food Pantry is in need of donations of canned
vegetables, canned fruit, tuna and peanut butter. We are
also in need of grocery bags with
handles and clothing donations.
Please leave your donations beside
the Food Pantry door across from
the Choir Room or in the Narthex.
Our church's food pantry and
clothes closet is in need of
volunteers. We are open each Wednesday morning
between 10 AM and Noon. This summer we have been
fortunate to have students helping to staff this operation;
however, beginning in September, we can use some help
in the registration area, the food distribution area and the
clothes closet.
If you can work one or more mornings each month,
please contact either Horace Ford or Anne Durrett. You
may want to first visit and observe the operation to
determine which of the specific jobs might interest you.
Each week we typically serve about 60 lower income
family units who reside in zip codes 23222 and 23227.
Join us as we provide food and clothing in the name of
Christ.
We are also in need of monetary donations. To serve the
number of people that we are serving at this time costs
about $600 per month. If you could donate towards
this need, please do so and indicate “food pantry” on the
check or envelope.
Thanks.
