SAMPLE PAPER NO. 1
Read the following passage carefully.

(I)

(12 Marks)
Many of us believe that “small” means “insignificant”. We believe that small actions and
choices do not have much impact on our lives. We think that it is only the big things, the big
actions and the big decisions that really count. But when you look at the lives of all great
people, you will see that they built their character through small decisions, small choices and
small actions that they performed every day. They transformed their lives through a step-bystep or day-by-day approach. They nurtured and nourished their good habits and chipped away
at their bad habits, one step at a time. It was their small day-to-day decisions that added up to
make tremendous difference in the long run. Indeed, in matters of personal growth and
character building, there is no such thing as an overnight success.
Growth always occurs through a sequential series of stages. There is an organic process to
growth. When we look at children growing up, we can see this process at work: the child first
learns to crawl, then to stand and walk, and finally to run. The same is true in the natural world.
The soil must first be tilled, and then the seed must be sowed. Next, it must be nurtured with
enough water and sunlight, and only then will it grow, bear fruit and finally ripen and be ready
to eat.
Gandhi understood this organic process and used this universal law of nature to his benefit.
Gandhi grew in small ways, in his day-to-day affairs. He did not wake up one day and find
himself to be the “Mahatma”. In fact, there was nothing much in his early life that showed signs
of greatness. But from his mid twenties onwards, he deliberately and consistently attempted to
change himself, reform himself and grow in some small way every day. Day-by-day, hour-byhour, he risked failure, experimented and learnt from mistakes. In small and large situations
alike, he took up rather than avoid responsibility.
People have always marvelled at the effortless way in which Gandhi could accomplish the most
difficult tasks. He displayed great deal of self-mastery and discipline that was amazing. These
things did not come easily to him. Years of practice and disciplined training went into making
his successes possible. Very few saw his struggles, fears, doubts and anxieties, or his inner
efforts to overcome them. They saw the victory, but not the struggle.
This is a common factor in the lives of all great people: they exercised their freedom and
choices in small ways that made great impact on their lives and their environment. Each of their
small decisions and actions, added up to have a profound impact in the long run. By
understanding this principle, we can move forward, with confidence, in the direction of our
dreams. Often when our “ideal goal” looks too far from us, we become easily discouraged,
disheartened and pessimistic. However, when we choose to grow in small ways, taking small
steps one at a time, performing it becomes easy.
On the basis of your understanding of the passage, answer the following questions by
choosing the most appropriate option. (1×4 = 4)
(i) The main idea in the first paragraph is that
a. big things, big actions and big decisions make a person great
b. small actions and decisions are important in one’s life
c. overnight success is possible for all of us
d. personal changes are not important
(ii) What does the writer mean by saying ‘chipped away at their bad habits’?
a. steadily gave up bad habits
b. slowly produced bad habits
c. gradually criticized bad habits
d. did not like bad habits
(iii) Which of the following statements is true in the context of the third paragraph?
a. Gandhi became great overnight
b. Gandhi showed signs of greatness in childhood itself
c. every day Gandhi made efforts to change himself in some small way
d. Gandhi never made mistakes
(iv) What is done by great people to transform their lives?
a. They approach life on a day-by-day basis
b. They build character in small ways
c. They believe in performing everyday
d. All of these
(II) Answer the following questions as briefly as possible.
(1×6 = 6)
a. How do small actions and choices impact our lives?
b. Describe organic process of growth through an example from the text.
c. What according to the author is the ‘universal law of nature’?
d. How did Gandhi accomplish the most difficult tasks effortlessly?
e. Which things about Gandhi’s life were not seen by most people?
f. How can we achieve our ‘ideal goals’?
(III) Pick out words from the passage which are similar in meaning to the following: (2
Marks)
a. intentionally / purposely (Paragraph 3)
b. of deep significance; far-reaching (Paragraph 5)
Read the following passage carefully.
(8)
Whether work should be placed among the causes of happiness or among the causes of
unhappiness may perhaps be regarded as a doubtful question. There is certainly much work
which is exceedingly irksome, and an excess of work is always very painful. However, work is
not, to most people, more painful than idleness. There are, in work, all grades; from more relief
of tedium up to the profoundest delights, according to the nature of the work and the abilities of
the worker. Most of the work that most people have to do is not interesting in itself, but even
that work has certain great advantages. To begin with, it fills a good many hours of the day
without the need of deciding what one shall do. Most people, when they are left free to fill their
own time according to their own choice, are at a loss to think of anything sufficiently pleasant
to be worth doing. And whatever they decide on, they are troubled by the feeling that something
else would have been more pleasant here. To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last
product of civilization and at present very few people have reached this level. Moreover the
exercise of choice is tiresome in itself. Except, to people with unusual initiative, it is positively
agreeable to be told what to do at each hour of the day, provided the orders are not too
unpleasant. Most of the idle rich suffer unspeakable boredom. At times they may find relief by
hunting big game in Africa or by flying around the world, but the number of such sensations is
limited, especially after youth is past. Accordingly, the more intelligent rich men work nearly as
hard as if they were poor. Work, therefore is desirable, first and foremost as a preventive of
boredom, although uninteresting work is as boring as having nothing to do. With this advantage
of work, another associated advantage is that it makes holidays much more delicious when they
come. Provided that a man does not have to work so hard as to impair his vigour, he is likely to
find far more zest than an idle man would possibly find. The second advantage of most paid
work and some of unpaid work is that it gives chances of success and opportunities for
ambition. In most work, success is measured by income and while our capitalistic society
continues, this is inevitable. However dull work too, becomes bearable, if it is a means of
building up a reputation. Continuity of purpose is one of the most essential ingredients of
happiness and that comes chiefly through work.
a. On the basis of your reading of the above passage make notes on it, using headings and
sub – headings. Use recognizable abbreviations (wherever necessary – minimum 4) and a
format you consider suitable. Also supply an appropriate title to it.

SAMPLE PAPER NO. 2
1. Read the following passage carefully:
(8)
1. Ants fascinate me. The restless ants are always up to something, indulging in all manners of
amazing acts, almost demonstrating a suspicion of wisdom in their tiny frames.
2. But diminutive size is no indicator of lack of common sense and sensations. In any case
animal intelligence is a subjective judgment since we tend to view things from a human
perspective.
3. In a nutshell, if terms like intelligence aren’t applicable to non-human life, for any reason,
ants are no great fools either. Within their tiny framework, they possess and reveal behavioural
patterns and responses displayed by larger animals: hearing, smelling, mating and more.
4. Ants form what must perhaps be the most industrious and organized societies in nature.
They’ve been around long before birds or mammals appeared.
5. Ants must be the most abundant creatures around. They thrive in huge colonies that are
complex social structures with a unique caste system.
6. There are three prominent kinds of ants. The largest are the queens who are mature females (I
think females of most life forms are more mature!). The ratio is usually one queen to a colony,
she being the founder of new colonies and then spending a lifetime as an egg-laying machine.
7. Though the initial period is hard work for Queen Mother, her chores and responsibilities
gradually reduce as more and more of her progeny appear. The winged males who appear at
swarming time and mate with her, soon die.
8. In comparison, the hustling, toiling workers are under-developed females who lead a life of
absolute celibacy. But, it is these that make the ant society live and outlive other bigger
creatures.
9. Of all ants, I find the Harvesters most exciting and eagerly await the onset of the rains for now
these little insects remain busy making new nests, like fortresses on the ground. Harvesters are
incredible architects and make nests from plain, damp earth.
10. The outside of their nests looks like a maze of fortress walls. Underground, the nest proper is
rather complicated with special store-rooms, egg-chambers and various other compartments.
These ants go on seed-collecting safaris and hoard seeds of grasses and cereal crops, and in time
of famine, people have been known to remove up to two kilos of grain from a nest.
1.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions by choosing the best
of the given choices.
(a) Why is the author fascinated by ants?
(i) Their amazing acts make the observer think they are wise.
(ii) They have a queen and worker ants.
(iii) They are the most industrious and organized.
(iv) All the above.
(b) Why does the author say “ants are no great fools”?
(i) They are present in abundance.
(ii) They thrive in complex social structures.
(iii) Their behavioural pattern shows intelligence
(iv) All the above
1.2 Answer questions (c) to (f) briefly.
(c) What is meant by a caste system among ants?
(d) How is a queen ant different from other ants?
(e) What important role do worker ants play in ant societies?
(f) Why have ant nests been compared to a maze of fortress walls?

Good decoration reflects the personality of the people who live in the home. It should, first of
all, be distinctive, just as each person is distinctive. A home should have unity not only within
each room but throughout the house. Rooms should, to some degree, harmonize with one an
other. The colour and styling of each room, particularly, should fit into the colour and styling of
the rooms which run out of it.
Attractive home furnishings set the stage for pleasant living. If they are an expression of
yourself, you will have a feeling of satisfaction every time you enter your home, and friends
will share your enjoyment.
3.
However, furnishings and surroundings which are expressive of just the right note of
restfulness or elegant simplicity are not often assembled by accident. Even enthusiasm alone is
not enough. For most home decorators, it takes poring over plans, trying colour schemes,
finding ingenious ways to make the best of what you have, and shopping around to search out
just the right purchases at prices you can afford to pay. But there is keen pleasure in striving for

the perfect result, and great satisfaction in achieving it.
A successful house and successful rooms will depend upon the proper relationship of each
element in it to the others and to the whole. Therefore, in selecting each piece it is well to
consider the background, the usage, the draperies, the floor covering, the upholstering
materials," the woods, shapes, colour scheme, and the "feeling" you prefer for the room.
Work and plan to enjoy your house. Limit the expenditures of time, effort and money to the
extent of your abilities, so that just running the house doesn't dominate your life. Elegance and
delicate things may be a drain you can afford only in a limited way. If you can't afford outside
help, select a house and furnishings that require less care. Plan your activities so that tumult and
upset are limited to a few rooms—an activity room or a bedroom, or a corner of the dining
6.
room.
You'll get more pleasure out of a house if you have a hobby connected with it—collecting glass
or antiques, gardening or indoor flower growing ceramics, art, cooking, decorating, flower
arrangements, etc. And you'll get more satisfaction and a great deal of help from studying
household activities.
7. You can select a pleasing combination of colours from a wallpaper, a fabric, an oriental rug, a
flower or a scene, or even a picture in a magazine. If you don't already have the furniture or the
rugs, it is a good idea to make up a colour scheme in this way. Let one colour predominate.
Limit a colour scheme to two or three colours, with white or grey tones. These points will help
you: (1) Always choose colours that please you personally—subtle, calm colours if you prefer a
restful atmosphere, intense colours if you like liveliness and cheer. (2) Don't be afraid of
colours. Experimenting on paper will give you confidence. (But remember, larger batches of
colour are more intense.) Try out various colour combinations, then live with them—look at
them frequently before you actually start buying. (3) Colours should harmonize with furniture,
draperies and carpets.

SECTION – A – READING
Q.1) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow by choosing
the right option from the given alternatives:
1. That large animals require luxuriant vegetation has been a general assumption which has passed
from one work to another; but I do not hesitate to say that it is completely false, and that it has
vitiated the reasoning of geologists on some points of great interest in the ancient history of the
world. The prejudice has probably been derived from India, and the Indian islands, where troops of
elephants, noble forests, and impenetrable jungles, are associated together in every one's mind. If,
however, we refer to any work of travels through the southern parts of Africa, we shall find
allusions in almost every page either to the desert character of the country, or to the numbers of
large animals inhabiting it. The same thing is rendered evident by the many engravings which have
been published of various parts of the interior.
2. Dr. Andrew Smith, who has lately succeeded in passing the Tropic of Capricorn, informs me that,
taking into consideration the whole of the southern part of Africa, there can be no doubt of its being
a sterile country. On the southern coasts there are some fine forests, but with these exceptions, the
traveler may pass for days together through open plains, covered by a poor and scanty vegetation.
Now, if we look to the animals inhabiting these wide plains, we shall find their numbers
extraordinarily great, and their bulk immense.
3. It may be supposed that although the species are numerous, the individuals of each kind are few.
By the kindness of Dr. Smith, I am enabled to show that the case is very different. He informs me,
that in lat. 24', in one day's march with the bullock-wagons, he saw, without wandering to any great
distance on either side, between one hundred and one hundred and fifty rhinoceroses - the same day
he saw several herds of giraffes, amounting together to nearly a hundred.
4. At the distance of a little more than one hour's march from their place of encampment on the
previous night, his party actually killed at one spot eight hippopotamuses, and saw many more. In
this same river there were likewise crocodiles. Of course it was a case quite extraordinary, to see so
many great animals crowded together, but it evidently proves that they must exist in great numbers.
Dr. Smith describes the country passed through that day, as 'being thinly covered with grass, and
bushes about four feet high, and still more thinly with mimosa-trees.'
5. Besides these large animals, anyone the least acquainted with the natural history of the Cape has
read of the herds of antelopes, which can be compared only with the flocks of migratory birds. The
numbers indeed of the lion, panther, and hyena, and the multitude of birds of prey, plainly speak of
the abundance of the smaller quadrupeds: one evening seven lions were counted at the same time
prowling round Dr. Smith's encampment. As this able naturalist remarked to me, the carnage each
day in Southern Africa must indeed be terrific! I confess it is truly surprising how such a number of
animals can find support in a country producing so little food.
6. The larger quadrupeds no doubt roam over wide tracts in search of it; and their food chiefly
consists of under wood, which probably contains much nutriment in a small bulk. Dr. Smith also
informs me that the vegetation has a rapid growth; no sooner is a part consumed, than its place is
supplied by a fresh stock. There can be no doubt, however, that our ideas respecting the apparent
amount of food necessary for the support of large quadrupeds are much exaggerated. The belief that
where large quadrupeds exist, the vegetation must necessarily be luxuriant, is the more remarkable,
because the converse is far from true.
7. Mr. Burchell observed to me that when entering Brazil, nothing struck him more forcibly than the
splendour of the South American vegetation contrasted with that of South Africa, together with the
absence of all large quadrupeds. In his Travels, he has suggested that the comparison of the
respective weights (if there were sufficient data) of an equal number of the largest herbivorous
quadrupeds of each country would be extremely curious. If we take on the one side, the elephants
hippopotamus, giraffe, bos caffer, elan, five species of rhinoceros; and on the American side, two
tapirs, the guanaco, three deer, the vicuna, peccari, capybara (after which we must choose from the
monkeys to complete the number), and then place these two groups alongside each other it is not
easy to conceive ranks more disproportionate in size.
8. After the above facts, we are compelled to conclude, against anterior probability that among the
mammalia there exists no close relation between the bulk of the species, and the quantity of the
vegetation, in the countries which they inhabit.

Q.2) Read the following passage carefully and answers the question that follow
1. Classical dance evolved from Tamil Nadu‟s temples across centuries. The revived and
reformed Bharatanatyam keeps the art born of these ancient temples alive even to this day.
Once sustained and nurtured in temples as part of a rich and vibrant temple tradition,
classical dance in South India has remained over centuries a dynamic, living tradition that is
continuously renewed.
2. Even 2000 years ago, dance in India was a highly evolved and complex art. It was an integral
part of ancient Indian theatre as established by the Natya Shastra, the oldest and exhaustive
treatise on theatre and dramaturgy. Dance dramas were performed in temple precincts. Dance
movements were crystallised in stone as karanas in temple sculpture. Following the Bhakti
movement in the 6th century, dance and music became powerful vehicles of veneration. The
deity was treated like a much-loved king, praised and royally entertained with music and
dance, as part of the daily sacred rituals of worship. Gifted, highly educated temple dancers
or devadasis were supported by the temples that were richly endowed by the rulers. Some
400 temple dancers were dedicated to and maintained by the Brihadeswarar Temple in
Thanjavur. Dance evolved as a composite art in temples as dancers, nattuvanars (dance
gurus), musicians, poets, composers, architects, sculptors and painters shared a holistic
approach to all the arts.
3. The evolution of Bharatanatyam derives from the invaluable contribution of The Tanjore
Quartet. The four Pillai brothers – Chinnayya, Ponnayya, Sivanandam and Vadivelu – served
as court musicians at the kingdom of Maratha king, Serfoji II in the early 19th century. Their
legacy to Bharatanatyam has been their restructuring of the dance repertoire into the margam
format and their vast and diverse music compositions set specifically for dance. Some of
their descendants like Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai evolved the famous Pandanallur bani
(style) and trained many eminent dancers.
4. From the temples, dance made its way into the courts of kings and dancers were not just
devadasis, but also rajanartakis. By the early 17th century dance forms like sadir or chinna
melam, precursors to Bharatanatyam as we know it today had become popular in the courts
of the Maratha rulers in Thanjavur. However, in the 19th century, colonial propaganda
perceived such dance as vulgar and immoral. It led to the Anti-Nautch Movement and
legislation against temple dance and dancers. Divested of all patronage and temple support,
devadasis were thrown into dire straits. In the early 20th century, thanks to enlightened
visionaries like EV Krishna Iyer and later, Rukmini Devi Arundale, and the dedication of a
handful of devadasis and nattuvanars, classical dance was resuscitated and revived as
bharatanatyam. Today, apart from a few cultural festivals in some temples, dance has left the
temple for the proscenium stage.

Q.1) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow by choosing
the right option from the given alternatives:
1 A few months ago, I looked everywhere for my high school and college certificates but couldn’t
find them. Then, realising the manner in which I had been storing all kinds of paper documents – in
drawers, under beds, in old suitcases – I got myself two dozen plastic files in assorted colours. I
gave each file a name like “ User Manuals “ or “Property Docs” or Taxes FY 10 to FY 15”. Indeed,
there’s one labelled “Certificates” too, which had started this process in the first place. By
dedicating that file to my 17 years of getting an education, I hoped my missing school and college
diplomas would somehow find their way to their new home.
2 I’m not worried anyway. First, I’ve never lost anything. Things only get misplaced in our house.
Second, who’d want to see those certificates at this point in my life? I’m long past the age when you
go for job interviews, or when some young girl might say, “Daddy doesn’t believe you are a
graduate”.
3 Misplacing is such a comforting word. Why, it suggests that a certain object is not “irrecoverably
lost”. So it will in the future be recovered. Weeks ago, I was in my study, where I had removed my
computer’s side panel, secured by a single half-inch screw. I do this occasionally to vacuum dust
out. While I was putting the panel back, the screw slipped out. I saw it fall. I think I even saw it
bounce on the tiled floor. But then it vanished.
4 I looked all over the floor, below the computer desk, below the nearby bookshelf, even on the
veranda net to the room. I then used the vacuum cleaner to suck every molecule it could from
anywhere the screw could have remotely rested. Then, after covering my face with a towel. I pulled
the vacuum cleaner‟s bag out and emptied it. All it contained was a load of dust bunnies, hair, a few
paper clips, and a pearl ear ring that had been missing from months! Of course I had always, rightly,
insisted it had only been misplaced.
5 However, no PC screw in VC. And I wasn‟t letting anything – not even a screw-screw up any
work I had to do. I replaced the computer‟s side panel without the screw and it stayed there in its
slot. Weeks later, the misplaced screw hasn‟t made a difference – I‟m writing this on the same PC.
6 Now, from my long-time understanding of misplaced objects, I know how they are often finally
located. Consider more examples. I was wrapping a gift and couldn‟t find the cello tape anywhere.
So I managed with a small tube of glue. Then, one day, as I was searching for a misplaced cheque
book, I found the cello tape. Another day, I misplaced my keys (happens regularly). It was nearly
time to leave for work when I realised that my wallet too was missing. (Fortunately, that morning I
had not misplaced my glasses making any searching easier.) That‟s when my wife asked, “Did you
take the sandwiches I packed for you?”
7 “No”, I said and started to look for the foil-wrapped sandwiches, my lunch, which had surely seen
ten minutes earlier. Not in the kitchen, not on the desk, in the hall or the fridge. By now I had even
started mildly suggesting that it was she who must have misplaced my lunch. Despite that, she
charitably took over the sandwich search while I quietly looked for my keys and wallet. After all
she could always make another sandwich. Finally, she came to the hall looking like she always does
when she finds something I had misplaced. “You‟d kept it next to the bed, my dear,” she said, along
with your wallet and your keys. Here ... you are getting late.”
8 The point I‟m trying to make: If you want to find something you‟ve misplaced, it usually helps to
trick it into being found by looking for something else.
9 It gets a bit more knotty if misplaced things leave the house. Four years ago, my friend and former
editor Ashok Mahadevan had lent me a set of Seinfeld comedy DVDs. I‟d watched and re-watched
them, since he was in no hurry to get them back. One day, recently, I was visiting Ashok‟s house
when he said something funny.
“Ha, ha,” I laughed. “You sound like Jerry Seinfeld.”
Ashok‟s wife Jessica laughed too. “You know, we used to have a whole set of Seinfeld DVDs,” she
then told me sentimentally. “I enjoyed them so much. I have no idea where they are now. I‟ve asked
all my friends .....,”
“They‟re all at my house,” I interrupted, Jessica was delighted.
“But I always knew they were with him,” said Ashok matter-of-factly.
The Seinfeld discs returned to their rightful home the very next week.
10 Jessica claims she‟d asked her husband about them but he‟d had no idea. Ashok can‟t recall any
of that. But, had she questioned him thoroughly about some other missing object that he had no
hand in misplacing, the DVDs might have showed up three years ago. Why, he‟d then have
responded with something like, “I don‟t know a thing about your digital camera, but I lent your
Seinfeld DVDs to ....” My school and college certificates are still missing. Actually, I‟m a bit scared
to even search. What if I just end up finding the screw?

Q.2) Read the following passage carefully and answers the question that follow
1. People being what they are get practical about creating their own currency as long as it is
honoured. In Africa sea shells were used until the 19th century as money. But gold, known
for its short supply and lasting quality – has been the most popular non-currency form of
money and is a standard for central banks.
2. Now in the age of the Internet, and digital technologies, money is undergoing an exciting
makeover with talk of virtual currencies, mobile wallets and software apps that pretty much
do what gold has been doing for centuries and currency notes have been doing for a while.
Technologies such as near-field communications are being used to make the mobile phone an
instrument of payment without the customer having to sign a credit card voucher, thus
making it more secure.
3. In general, software apps are being developed to substitute for money in various ways. Some
companies like Starbucks allow „digital tipping‟ of its baristas through a mobile app. Prepaid cash cards are being used as swipe instruments where customers do not need credit
cards or even bank accounts. The Net Gen ATM machines will recognize your face through
facial biometric technologies.
4. Bitcoin, the most popular virtual currencies started circulating in 2009. Its current market
value has been estimated at around $8 billion, to 80000 transactions occurring daily,
according to reputed accounting firms. However, Washington‟s Internal Revenue Service
ruled that bitcoin are not currency but more like property – and thus subject to capital gains
tax.
5. Meanwhile other virtual currencies are taking off – and influencing politics. In Iceland,
which saw its banking system more or less wiped off, during the 2008 global financial crisis,
there emerged the eurocoin a new currency now estimated to be worth $11.37. This currency
is aimed at fighting capital controls imposed by the Iceland government.
6. Crypto currencies are a very important milestone in this fight for liberty from political
control. They bring the hope of a new era of free currencies immune to the meddling of
politicians.
7. In addition, money is undergoing an exciting makeover through innovations galore. Telecom
companies the world over, for instance, with support from their central banks are offering
customers „mobile money‟ as a service. Another innovation that is much talked about is the
mobile wallet and companies are helping their customers carry the equivalent of cash in their
handsets much like one carries travellers‟ cheques.
8. 8. Thus more and more practical solutions are being spawned across the planet to focus not
so much on money‟s „store of value‟ but as a medium of exchange.

Q.1) Read the following passage carefully and answers the questions that follow by choosing
the right option from the given alternatives:
1. Today there is a lot of talk about the environment. All nations are coming to an agreement to
save the planet earth. Like we pollute the earth, we pollute the water; we also pollute the
subtle environment through our negative feelings and emotions. We have become a victim of
our environment. We are not able to control our mind. We hear a lot about other things in life
but we spend very little time to hear about ourselves. How to handle our mind? How to be in
the present moment? How to be happy and grateful? This, we have not learnt. This is the
most unfortunate thing. Then, what is the solution? This is where we miss a very
fundamental principle that governs our environment, our mind, our emotions and our life in
general.
2. Our body has the capacity to sustain much longer the vibration of bliss and peace than it
does negative emotion because positivity is in the centre of our existence. Just like in the
structure of an atom, protons and neutrons are in the centre of the atom and electrons are only
the periphery, same is with our lives: the centre core of our existence is bliss, positivity and
joy, but it is surrounded by a cloud of negative ions. Through the help of our breath we can
easily get over our negative emotions in a short period of time. Through meditation and
certain breathing techniques, we can clear this negative cloud.

spend half our wealth to gain back the health. Is this success? It is very bad mathematics.

Q.2) Read the following passage carefully and answers the question that follow
Tourism has emerged as the world’s largest industry. Growing rapidly in the last two decades,
today it accounts for 6% of the world output and employs some 100 million people around the
globe. Since the end of the Second World War, it has developed immense revenue and
development potential and stands today as a natural renewable resource industry.
Tourism - the travel-based recreation provides people with a change of place and a break from
the monotony of daily life. It brings people of different nations together, allowing them to come
into close contact with each other’s customs and other aspects of life. It reveals the scenic beauty
and past heritage of a country to people belonging to other nations. The knowledge and
experience gained in the process can lead to greater understanding and tolerance and can even
promote world peace.
The contribution of tourism can be nowhere seen more clearly than on the economic front. A
study conducted by the United Nation has shown that developing countries, in particular, can
reap handsome benefits out of tourism which greatly boosts national income. Tourism generates
employment, and adds to the entrepreneurial wealth of a nation. While tourism’s advantages are
many, its undesirable side-effects have raised fresh problems. Tourism can cause social, cultural
or environmental disruption. Of the greatest concern is its damage to the environment. In order
to attract more tourists, sprawling resorts are built which take neither the local architectural
styles nor the ecology into consideration. Natural systems come to be destroyed as a result of
indiscriminate construction to provide water and waste disposal facilities and recreational
arrangements to tourists. Overuse of environmental wealth disturbs the ecological balance.
Damage is most in wildlife parks which remain the foremost sites of tourism attraction. Tourist
vans and visitors destroy the ground vegetation, thus affecting the feeding habits of the animals
and landscape as well,
Overcrowding brings about congestion, leading to environmental and health hazards. The Taj
Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, has suffered a lot of wear and tear from
trampling feet of tourists. socio-cultural effects of tourism have been damaging. Tourism often
ushers in new life styles; arrangements as desired by tourists are provided in order to make them
feel at home. The emergence of this ‘other’ culture in various places has caused dissatisfaction
among the local people. The concern is that the local people tend to imitate the foreign values
breaking away from their own traditions. To provide safe tourism while ensuring that it remains
a profitable industry, it is imperative to understand the factors that hamper the growth of tourism
and check them effectively. General instability of the nation is damaging to tourism prospects.
Political disturbances, in particular, pose a serious problem. The growing violence in the
international scene and increasing threat of tourism affects the flow of tourists. Countries like Sri
Lanka have been a victim to terrorist threats for long and have therefore suffered setbacks in
tourism. Whatever the problems, India must work hard to reap the benefits from this industry for
the country has everything to attract visitors from far and near.
