Interesting Probabilities
• The probability of landing on Boardwalk
during a game of Monopoly P(B)= 2.6%
• The probability of two people in this class
having the same birthday P(B) = 49%
• The probability of having the million
dollar case in deal or no deal P(M)= 3.8%

Probability Vocabulary
• Probability Experiment: a chance process
that leads to a well defined result called
an outcome
• Outcome: the result of a single trial of a
probability experiment
• Sample Space: the set of all possible
outcomes of a probability experiment

coins at the same time.

9
Event
• An action that leads to an outcome(rolling
a die)
• Simple Event: an event with one outcome
(rolling a 4 on a die)
• Compound Event: consists of two or
more outcomes of simple events (rolling a
4, then rolling a 1)
• Equally Likely Events: Events that have
the same probability of occurring.

Probability Facts
• Notation: P(A) Probability of event A
• The probability of an event occurring is always a
number between 0 and 1
0  P  A  1
• If event A cannot occur the probability is 0
• If event A is certain the probability is 1
• The SUM of all probabilities in the sample space
is 1.

A deck of cards (no jokers)
• Name a simple event
• Name a compound event
• How many items are in the sample space
if you select one card?
• Create an event that has a probability of 0
• Create an event that has a probability of 1
