Pervert doctor will be behind bars for a long time
LARNACA Criminal Court yesterday sentenced Stelios Stylianou, a 57-year-old Larnaca gynaecologist, to a total of 26
years for the rape, indecent assault and inhuman treatment and humiliation of his patients.
Stylianou was found guilty on 44 counts against 35 women: six rapes; 20 indecent assaults; 10 instances of cruel,
inhuman and humiliating behaviour towards his patients (taking photographs); and eight instances of illegally drugging
people in order to rape them.
Stylianou, who opened up a clinic in Aradippou in 1996, “took advantage of the trust his female patients showed
him,” drugging them and then raping or indecently assaulting them, the court said.
The court departed from the usual practice of running the sentences concurrently and decreed that Stylianou should
serve them consecutively, with the exception of an extra four years for drugging his patients, which is to run
concurrently.
If all sentences had been run concurrently he would have served a maximum of 11 years, the longest of the
sentences handed down. With the consecutive decision the various sentences add up to 26 years; 11 for raping an
underage girl; nine for the rape of five adult women; three for the indecent assault of a minor; two and a half for the
indecent assault of adults; and six months for the inhuman, cruel and humiliating way he treated his patients.
The court said the seriousness of the case had merited the harsher sentencing procedure. The judges said they could
not even put into words how people felt about Stylianou’s crimes. “No matter what we say, we cannot accurately
portray society’s anger, abhorrence and revulsion,” the court said.
Addressing the court, the convicted doctor said: “In the future, under no circumstances will I do anything of this
sort and I will abide by the Hippocratic Oath, I promise in front of God and people, my family, parents, sisters and
respected customers.” Usually, under medical ethics, doctors found guilty of a criminal offence are usually struck off.
However the medical association did not immediately respond to the sentencing.
The court ruling said Stylianou had “turned his clinic into a place for committing serious crimes to satisfy his
perverted sexual appetites”.
Stylianou’s crime spree only came to an end when one of his patients woke up ten minutes into ‘surgery’ in October
last year to discover she was tied with two cables leading up to her breasts with the naked doctor holding her hand on
his penis. Stylianou told her at the time that she was hallucinating. State pathologist Eleni Antoniou later confirmed that
Stylianou had not operated on the woman at all and in fact she didn’t need an operation.
Police later confiscated 563 pictures of naked women on the doctor’s computers and camera and had secured 43
written testimonies from women by November. “His clients entrusted their bodies to him so he could heal them and he
drugged them in order to do what he did,” the court said. Two of the patients he raped were aged 15 and 17; he had also
indecently assaulted the 15-year-old on two other occasions. He had told both girls they needed invasive procedures
and on one occasion took pictures of the girl while raping her.
Stylianou told the court he had family and health problems and medication had “altered [his] mental make-up” and
changed his personality. He also had minor erectile dysfunction: “this made me feel I wasn’t a complete man at the age
of 56 [his age when arrested] which hurt me incredibly,” he told the court.
“I never intended to harm my patients by, for example, publishing their pictures,” he said.
Stylianou said that in the future he would offer his knowledge to help “childless couples to find joy and happiness by
having children”.
A clinical psychologist told the court that he was aware of his actions and was of sound mind.
“He knew what he was doing was wrong and wanted to stop but could not… He never meant to harm his patients,” the
defence lawyer Efstathios Efstathiou said last week.

Some of the UK's largest companies will promise to create thousands of "real" jobs for 16- to 24-year-olds as concerns
grow over the effectiveness of government initiatives aimed at tackling youth unemployment.
Morrisons, the supermarket, Barclays, power firm E.ON and Phones 4u are among the founder members of the "16-24
Alliance", which will work with specialist charities offering training courses linked to permanent jobs with the
companies. A report published last month by the Local Government Association claimed that current efforts to get
young people into work were hampered by "excessive bureaucracy and duplication".
Norman Pickavance, the human resources director of Morrisons, said that the level of youth unemployment was a
"crisis" and urged other large companies to help avert a "lost generation". "There is confusion in the industry as to
which scheme does what, but rather than throw rocks at the government we are trying to be proactive," he said. "We are
trying to join the dots and deliver a solution young people can understand." Earlier this year Tesco was the focus of a
damaging row over "slave labour": work-experience schemes that saw the unemployed, under the threat of losing their
benefits, work for free in its stores. The 16-24 Alliance will tap funds linked to the government's Youth Contract – but
rather than bank the £2,275 offered as a wage incentive to companies, the funds will be redirected to organisations that
coach on literacy, numeracy and interpersonal skills. "This is not about big companies getting money from the
government," said Pickavance. "We don't need it – we just want something that works."
Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister, is due to announce the scheme on Monday and the CBI employers' body is also
keen to get involved. "Big business has a huge role to play in getting young people into work," Clegg will say.

Lamb Chops with Balsamic Reduction
Ingredients
 3/4 teaspoon dried rosemary
 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
 salt and pepper to taste
 4 lamb chops (3/4 inch thick)
 1 tablespoon olive oil
 1/4 cup minced shallots
 1/3 cup aged balsamic vinegar
 3/4 cup chicken broth
 1 tablespoon butter
Directions
1. In a small bowl or cup, mix together the rosemary,
basil, thyme, salt and pepper. Rub this mixture onto
the lamb chops on both sides. Place them on a plate,

cover and set aside for 15 minutes to absorb the
flavours.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high
heat. Place lamb chops in the skillet, and cook for
about 3 1/2 minutes per side for medium rare, or
continue to cook to your desired doneness. Remove
from the skillet, and keep warm on a serving platter.
Add shallots to the skillet, and cook for a few
minutes, just until browned. Stir in vinegar, scraping
any bits of lamb from the bottom of the skillet, then
stir in the chicken broth. Continue to cook and stir
over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, until the
sauce has reduced by half. If you don't, the sauce
will be runny and not good. Remove from heat, and
stir in the butter. Pour over the lamb chops, and
serve.

The Frog Prince
One fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself in a
wood; and when she came to a cool spring of water with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down to rest
a while. Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which was her favourite plaything; and she was always
tossing it up into the air, and catching it again as it fell.
After a time she threw it up so high that she missed catching it as it fell; and the ball bounded away, and
rolled along on the ground, until at last it fell down into the spring. The princess looked into the spring after
her ball, but it was very deep, so deep that she could not see the bottom of it. She began to cry, and said, 'Alas!
if I could only get my ball again, I would give all my fine clothes and jewels, and everything that I have in the
world.'
Whilst she was speaking, a frog put its head out of the water, and said, 'Princess, why do you weep so
bitterly?'
'Alas!' said she, 'what can you do for me, you nasty frog? My golden ball has fallen into the spring.'
The frog said, 'I do not want your pearls, and jewels, and fine clothes; but if you will love me, and let me
live with you and eat from off your golden plate, and sleep on your bed, I will bring you your ball again.'
'What nonsense,' thought the princess, 'this silly frog is talking! He can never even get out of the spring to
visit me, though he may be able to get my ball for me, and therefore I will tell him he shall have what he asks.'
So she said to the frog, 'Well, if you will bring me my ball, I will do all you ask.'
Then the frog put his head down, and dived deep under the water; and after a little while he came up again,
with the ball in his mouth, and threw it on the edge of the spring.

of heavy rainfall.

Making Ice Cream without Machine
First of all, prepare your ice cream mixture, then chill it over an ice bath.
Then, pour your custard mixture in a deep baking dish and put in the freezer.
After forty-five minutes, remove it from the freezer and stir it vigorously with a spatula or whisk.
Continue to check the mixture every 30 minutes, stirring vigorously as it’s freezing.
Keep checking periodically and stirring until the ice cream is frozen.
The last step, transfer the ice cream to a covered storage container until ready to serve.

CINDERELLA
Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Cinderella. She lived with her stepmother and two
stepsisters.
The stepmother and sisters were conceited and bad tempered. They treated Cinderella very badly. Her
stepmother made Cinderella do the hardest works in the house; such as scrubbing the floor, cleaning
the pot and pan and preparing the food for the family. The two stepsisters, on the other hand, did not
work about the house. Their mother gave them many handsome dresses to wear.
One day, the two stepsister received an invitation to the ball that the king’s son was going to give at the
palace. They were excited about this and spent so much time choosing the dresses they would wear. At
last, the day of the ball came, and away went the sisters to it. Cinderella could not help crying after they
had left.
“Why are crying, Cinderella?” a voice asked. She looked up and saw her fairy godmother standing beside
her, “because I want so much to go to the ball” said Cinderella. “Well” said the godmother,” you’ve been
such a cheerful, hardworking, uncomplaining girl that I am going to see that you do go to the ball”.
Magically, the fairy godmother changed a pumpkin into a fine coach and mice into a coachman and two
footmen. Her godmother tapped Cinderella’s raged dress with her wand, and it became a beautiful ball
gown. Then she gave her a pair of pretty glass slippers. “Now, Cinderella”, she said; “You must leave
before midnight”. Then away she drove in her beautiful coach.
Cinderella was having a wonderfully good time. She danced again and again with the king’s son.
Suddenly the clock began to strike twelve, she ran toward the door as quickly as she could. In her hurry,
one of her glass slipper was left behind.
A few days later, the king’ son proclaimed that he would marry the girl whose feet fitted the glass
slipper. Her stepsisters tried on the slipper but it was too small for them, no matter how hard they
squeezed their toes into it. In the end, the king’s page let Cinderella try on the slipper. She stuck out her
foot and the page slipped the slipper on. It fitted perfectly.
Finally, she was driven to the palace. The king’s son was overjoyed to see her again. They were married
and live happily ever after.

Many people believe they have true friends; three is no doubt in my mind that I have the best one out
there. His name is Craig Jones, not is he only my boyfriend he is the best friend I could ever have. If
Craig wasn’t in my life right now I probably wouldn’t be in school or making other important
changes in my life. He has shown me so many wonderful qualities in myself that I was just throwing
away. My most favorite quality I admire in Craig is that he would never insult me or make me feel
less of my self for any reason. During the span of our relationship he has put up with some lies that I
have come clean with and that is another huge reason why he is so wonderful. He can see that I love
him too and that it was courageous for me to come out with my past. He looks pass the past and loves
me for the person that I am today. A true Friend is one that is always encouraging and stands behind
you in every decision that you make. I look to Craig for advice in tough decisions, and even if we
disagree he still stands behind me in whatever decision I make. Those are some genuine qualities of a
true friend.

Fast Food? Be Careful What You Eat!
Although many of us find fast food convenient when we are in a rush, it is a bad
idea to eat it too much or too often. Recently, McDonald’s in Canada has had the
two-dollar deal: a Big Mac and small fries. This is a very big temptation, and even
my son (who doesn’t normally eat at McDonald’s) bought this meal last week. But
what did he eat when he ate a Big Mac and fries? First, in the hamburger he got
570 calories, with almost half of them (280 calories) coming from fat. Ten grams
of this fat is saturated, the most dangerous kind, the kind which is harmful to our
heart. The Canadian Food Guide recommends that we "choose lower-fat foods more often." Now,
remember that my son also gets a small fries! Unfortunately, there are another 210 calories in the
fries, with 10 more grams of fat (1.5 grams of it saturated). I’m sure he bought a drink as well, which
adds another 150 calories (small size). Now, imagine he eats this dinner more than once a week! A
two-dollar meal contains a lot of fat. So, although it is very convenient (and cheap) to buy fast food,
it is quite alarming to see just how much fat we are eating—I think I’ll go and eat an apple, instead!
