October 10, 2013 Dear Parents, Athletics play a vital role in the lives of our students. Student-athletes learn a great deal from their participation in interscholastic athletics. Lessons in sportsmanship, personal best, teamwork, competition and how to win and lose gracefully are integral to the Washougal School District Athletics program. Athletics play an important part in helping students develop a healthy body and life style. Athletic competition adds to our school spirit and helps all students and spectators, as well as participants, develop pride in their school. The Washougal School District Athletic Program shall be conducted in accordance with existing WIAA rules and procedures, the Washougal School District policies and procedures, as well as individual sport expectations and rules. While the Washougal School District takes great pride in a winning season, it does not condone “winning at all cost” and discourages any and all pressures that might neglect good sportsmanship and good mental health. A safe, civil environment is essential to student and staff achievement (see WSD Board Policy 5282 for additional information regarding civil conduct). Athletic competition for our student-athletes should be fun and should also be a significant part of a sound educational program, embodying high standard of ethics and sportsmanship while developing good character and other important life skills. Essential elements of character building are essential in the concept of sportsmanship and the core ethical values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. We believe that it is the responsibility of ALL to teach and display sportsmanship at all athletic events. Parents/guardians need to be supportive of and partake in the encouragement of teaching our athletes to be good sports. We are asking that all parents/spectators pledge and please sign our Spectator Code of Conduct (on the back of this page) that will be the sportsmanship standard at all WSD sponsored athletic events. As a parent you have the great responsibility of supporting and building on the efforts of staff to teach your child to display good sportsmanship at all times. If you have any questions, please contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at 360-954-3104. Any person, adult or child, who behaves in an unsportsmanlike manner during an athletic or extracurricular event may be required to leave the event. Admission to school events may be denied for up to a year if an administrator observes firsthand or completes an investigation that indicates that a spectator has engaged in inappropriate behavior. Attendance at interscholastic athletic and extracurricular events is a privilege, not a right, and all spectators are expected to represent the school, the team and the community with dignity. Some examples of unsportsmanlike conduct include but are not limited to: Using profanity, vulgar, obscene language, obscene gestures, offensive remarks of a sexual nature, trash-talking, taunting, boastful celebrations, negative or demeaning cheers, or other actions that demean individuals or the sport; Berating or demeaning any participating players or coaches. Promoting behavior that might cause injury to others; Lack of self-control by showing excessive displays of anger or frustration. Possessing or being under the influence of any alcoholic beverage, illegal substance; or tobacco. Possessing a weapon; fighting or otherwise striking or threatening another person; Failing to obey instructions of a security officer or a school district employee; Engaging in any activity that is illegal or disruptive; Complaining or arguing about official’s calls or decisions during or after an athletic event; Complaining or arguing with a coach. Failure to listen to and obey the request of the public address announcer. A signature is not required to hold spectators accountable to these standards. A signature is appreciated as evidence of support and commitment to make the experience of our student-athletes, staff, parents and community members a positive one. I have read and understand the requirements of this Code of Conduct and acknowledge that I may be forbidden from attending games or practices if I violate any of the provisions. A parent signature represents agreement to the Code of Conduct for the entire family. ______________________________________ Parent/Spectator Signature _______________________ Date
