Kindle - Toulon Public Library

Download library e-books to a Kindle (Next Generation Instructions)
What you’ll need
- Your Kindle device
- An Amazon account
- A Toulon Public Library card and PIN number
- A computer with Internet access
• On your computer, go to www.toulonpld.org and navigate to the Alliance Digital Media Library
(ADML).
• At the top right corner of the page, click Sign In. From the dropdown list, choose Toulon Public
Library. Enter your library card number and your PIN number and click Sign In. If you don’t know your
PIN, contact the Toulon Public Library (309-286-5791).
• You will be brought back to the ADML homepage. Here, you can browse e-books by genres or
categories, or you can search for a specific title or author by using the Search box at the top right of the
screen. Advanced Search will allow you to search by subject, format, date added to the site, language,
and more. You can also limit the search results to titles that are currently available. NOTE: Kindle devices
can read the Kindle Book format, or you can read OverDrive Read books on your computer’s browser.
• Click on the cover of a book to see more information about it, including a description, number of
copies available, and formats available, or to check out the book. As you browse e-books, you will see
that the upper right corner of each book cover is an open book symbol that will be either dark gray or
light gray. If it is dark gray, the book is available for checkout. If it is light gray, then it is currently
checked out, but you can add it to your Holds. You may checkout two items at a time, and place two on
hold.
• Click on the cover of a book you’d like to borrow. If you would like to change the lending period, click
(Change) below the text. Your e-book will automatically return itself after this period of time. Click on
the blue Borrow button in the middle of the page to check out the book.
If the book is not available for check out, the blue button will read Place a hold. Click on it to place a
hold on the book. You will receive an email when a copy of the e-book becomes available.
• After clicking borrow, you will come to your Bookshelf. Next to the title you would like to download,
click the blue Download (Select one format) button. Check Kindle Book from the dropdown choices
Then, click Confirm & Download.
NOTE: By choosing Read (In your browser), you can read the e-book via your computer’s browse
(OverDrive Read works best with Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Internet Explorer10). With this option, you
do not need to download the e-book in order to read it; you can read it directly from your computer.
However, you will need to choose the Download > Kindle Book option to read the book on your Kindle.
• You will be transferred to a page on Amazon.com that says, “Get Your Digital Library Loan.” Click on
the yellow Get library book button on the right side of the screen. You will be prompted to enter your
email address and Amazon password.
• If you have multiple Kindle devices, you will be asked to choose the device for the delivery of your
title. Choose your device from the dropdown menu next to Deliver to. Then choose Continue.
• If you have Wi-Fi enabled on your Kindle, your library e-book will sync the next time you are
connected to Wi-Fi. When you are connected to Wi-Fi, go to Menu on your Kindle and then on your
Kindle and then Sync or Check for Items. Your book will download, and you can start reading!
• If you do not have Wi-Fi enabled on your Kindle, go to the top of the page and choose Manage Your
Kindle. Here, you will find a list of your available e-books. Find the e-book you just checked out and
choose Actions. Then, click on Download & transfer via USB. You will be prompted to Open or Save the
file. Choose Save As. This will let you save the file to a specific location on your computer. Click on your
Kindle in the list of locations and then double click on Documents. Choose Save. After your e-book
downloads, you can unplug your Kindle from the USB cord. You are ready to read!
NOTE: When you are browsing e-books on ADML, you may come across a note that says, “USB only.”
This means this e-book cannot be downloaded via WiFi and you must transfer via your USB cord.
