A guide to your
HSBC Debit
MasterCard® card
How to use your new security
chip-enabled debit card with contactless
payment technology
One small chip for
greater peace of mind
Your HSBC Debit MasterCard® card now offers even
greater fraud protection with an embedded security
chip.
The encrypted microchip is difficult to duplicate
and provides greater protection against fraudulent
purchases than traditional magnetic stripe debit
cards.
Transactions
at chip-enabled terminals enhance
security because your card never leaves your
sight during the purchase.
The HSBC Debit MasterCard®
card with Contactless Payment
Technology
Your HSBC Debit MasterCard® card is equipped with
a “contactless” and convenient way to pay for your
purchases.
Because it’s even faster than swiping, it’s ideal for
places such as fast food restaurants, grocery stores,
movie theaters and gas stations.
How does it work?
Simply tap your HSBC Debit MasterCard® card on
the contactless payment reader at checkout, and your
purchase will be completed.
Sometimes referred to as EMV technology, this card
payment method is the standard in over 80 countries
and is quickly growing in acceptance across the U.S.
Chip-enabled credit cards are already available from
most card issuers, including HSBC Bank USA, N.A.
Secure purchases
Secure encryption technology, along with Zero
Liability¹ protection, makes using your HSBC Debit
MasterCard® card a safe method of payment for all
your purchases.
How to use your chip card
When making a purchase at a chip-enabled terminal,
simply insert your chip card instead of swiping it, and
then enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Your card will remain in the terminal during the entire
transaction. When complete, you’ll be prompted to
remove your card.
You
are in control – your debit card never leaves
your hands to make a payment.
No
accidental payments – your debit card must be
extremely close to the reader at checkout
to work.
You

won’t be billed twice – even if you tap more
than once at checkout, you’ll only get billed once
for your purchase.

At the ATM, when your chip card is detected, you will
be prompted to re-insert your card in the ATM. Similar
to purchases made at chip terminals, your card will
remain in the machine for the entire transaction. Your
card can then be removed once the transaction is
complete.
What if the merchant doesn’t have a
chip-enabled terminal?
Your debit card can still be swiped as it is today, and
you will be prompted to enter your PIN or provide your
signature to complete the transaction.
What if I forget my PIN?
You can request a PIN reminder to be mailed to you by
calling the number on the back of your card.
Where can contactless payment
technology be used?
There are a growing number of merchants that
currently accept contactless payment technology,
with more being added all the time.
