Law 13
Free Kicks
1
Objectives
At the end of this lesson the student
will:
• list the elements necessary for a correctly
taken free kick
• state the two exceptions to placing the ball
at the point of infraction
• state an exception to the 10 yard
requirement
• state the difference between a DFK and
IFK
2
DEFINITION OF A FREE KICK
“The way play is
restarted after the
referee has
stopped play for an
offence or
infringement”
5
THERE ARE ONLY 2
TYPES OF FREE KICKS
Direct Free
Kick
IFK (Indirect Free Kick)
6
DIRECT FREE KICK
GOAL!
B
A
• One of the 10 DFK fouls
• Can score directly against opponent
• Outside penalty area of offending team
7
INDIRECT FREE KICK
B
GOAL!
A
• One of the 8 IFK offenses
• Cannot score directly against opponent
• Must touch another player!
8
FREE KICK “RULES”
•
•
•
•
•
Ball must be stationary
Kicked in any direction
No “double touch”
No encroachment
Restart signal requirements
– “Quick” restart
– “Ceremonial” restart
• Cannot score directly against self
• Point of infraction (2 exceptions)
9
GOAL AREA REQUIREMENTS
Exception #1
If given to a team within own goal area,
can be moved to anywhere in goal area.
1. All opponents must be out of penalty area
2. Ball must clear penalty area prior to 2nd touch10
GOAL AREA REQUIREMENTS
Exception #2
IFK in opponent’s goal area is moved out to
the nearest point on the goal area line
11
PENALTY AREA REQUIREMENTS
Also, if given to a team within their own penalty area
• All opponents must be out of penalty area
• Ball must clear penalty area prior to 2nd touch
12
POSITION OF FREE KICKS
All free kicks are taken from the place where
the infringement occurred except:
• Free kicks for offences involving a player entering, reentering or leaving the field of play without permission
are taken from the position of the ball when play was
stopped.
• However, if a player leaves the field of play as part of
play and commits an offence against another player,
play is restarted with a free kick taken on the boundary
line nearest to where the offence occurred; for direct free
kick offences, a penalty kick is awarded, if this is within
the offender’s penalty area.
13
“QUICK” FREE KICK
• Kicking team has a right to a quick restart if they
wish to use it
– Opponents must retire 10 yards
– Opponents have no right to form a wall
• The referee should:
– move quickly out of the way after indicating the area
of the restart
– do nothing to interfere with the “quick” restart
– delay the restart only when requested by the kicking
team
14
“QUICK” FREE KICK
• However, if misconduct has occurred:
– Referee must act quickly to delay the restart
– Referee must record the info and show card
– Even if one team or the other would benefit
from this delay
– Must signal for the restart (whistle)
• Hand signal if IFK
15
“QUICK” FREE KICK GUIDELINES
• If a player takes a free kick quickly and an
opponent who is less than 9.15 m (10 yds) from
the ball intercepts it, the referee allows play to
continue.
- The kicker or kicker’s team may not claim
infringement if they kick ball to the opponent
• However, an opponent who deliberately prevents
a free kick being taken must be cautioned for
delaying the restart of play.
(If the Infringing opponent moves toward the ball
and blocks the kick) - Caution player - retake kick
16
“CEREMONIAL” FREE KICK
•
•
•
•
•
•
Organized “defensive wall”
Clearly show kicker to wait for whistle
Be “first brick” in the wall - 10 yards
Bring opponents to you
Move to your next position
Signal for restart
– When you are ready
– As soon as possible
17
ENCROACHMENT
10 yards
in all
directions
Failure
to respect
the required
distance is
a cautionable
offense
18
ENCROACHMENT
Opponents must retire 10 yards with one exception,
if they’re between goalposts and on the goal line.
19
RESTART MECHANICS
• Point direction!
– Players want/need to know if they are
“attacking” or “defending”
• Indicate IFK if appropriate
– Players want/need to know if they can score
directly from this kick
• Indicate position of ball
20
RESTART MECHANICS
• Position yourself
• Allow quick kick to be taken
– Watch for encroachment
– Act, if encroachment makes a difference
• Indicate IFK if appropriate
– Retake IFK if arm wasn’t raised and the ball
enters the goal
• Use whistle if “ceremonial” kick
21
BALL IN PLAY VS. GOAL SCORED
• Ball is “in play” when:
– Kicked and clearly moves and
– Leaves penalty area (if appropriate)
• Goal can be scored when:
– Ball is “in play”
– Ball is touched by 2nd player on IFK
– Ball is kicked into opponents’ goal
22
