Our first game of the season saw a return to a team from last year, Seedfield A. We had enjoyed a hard fought
victory over them towards the end of last season and the boys were looking forward to getting the first game
under their belts.
The match began with both teams having several chances to score. However, it was clear to see that apart
from some neat passing at the start of the game from the opposition, they would be happy booting the ball
high up the pitch and hoping for the best. After 5 minutes and The Lions going close to scoring Seedfield
took the lead with a hit and hope pass bouncing luckily into the goal. By half time The Lions were
inexplicably 3 goals down to nil. There was a moment where the manager was afraid of seeing some heads
begin to dip, but a sharp word put a stop to this.
At half time, the boys were praised for a good performance and excellent attitude as the score line did not
nearly reflect how much possession we had had. A little more concentration and desire to get to the ball first
was all that was needed and the boys went on for the second half trying to win the final 25 minutes.
An early goal from Lewis Unwin, a neat right footed clip at the near post from a corner put us back in it, but
Seedfield got one more straight from the resulting kick off, which was disappointing. However, The Lions
had got the scent of goals and for the last 20 minutes of the match they were unstoppable. Seedfield’s goal
was pummelled and the opposition were panic stricken by quick passing and confident running with the ball.
A driven second from Lewis and a classic Joe Gregory ‘screamer’ from outside the area, as well as an own
goal was answered by only one more from the opposition. The final score of 5-4 showed what a spirited fight
back The Lions gave and they deserved at least a draw for their efforts. They had won the second half
convincingly.
There were great performances all over the pitch. Alex showed his growing maturity in goal by keeping his
head up, just and the confidence of George Lengden and Callum Pollard on the ball in defence was a pleasure
to watch; not a pass wasted. The confidence of Luke Smith, Ethan Rigney and Josef Rimmer grew throughout
the match and Andrew Gregory kept his position well when called upon up front. Lewis and Joe Gregory
weighed in with their first goals of the season and bright displays. But man of the match went to debutant
Luke Evans, whose confidence and trickery on the ball opened up the opposition on many occasions.
Keep playing the way you did in the second half boys and we won’t lose many more games this season!
Lenny.
