As you may know, Bay Area Humane Society (BAHS) is not government-funded and therefore, we rely heavily on donations and fundraising. We host three large annual fundraising events, and there are a few fundraisers inspired by local individuals and businesses that have become much anticipated among our supporters. We’re fortunate that because many people are passionate about animals, we receive many inquiries about helping with fundraising events - everything from softball tournaments to cookoffs, picture contests to marathons. There’s a lot of great creativity out there! If you really want to do something on your own but you’ve not had a lot of experience organizing a fundraising event, we’d like to share some thoughts from lessons we’ve learned over the years. We hope some early insight can help avoid some disappointments and/or help you. We want you to be successful and feel good about helping us at Bay Area Humane Society help the shelter animals! ******** Please understand that our staff is limited and we cannot commit to assist with or appear at every fundraising event. We wish we could! With three of our own events to organize, our staff is kept very busy all year. We appreciate your understanding in that because BAHS has pet segments on a station or receives sponsorship for another event we cannot promote your specific event. But we can and will promote your event on our Facebook wall. If you’re considering including a raffle in your event, please be aware that the State of Wisconsin requires a license and that specific procedures be followed. You can find details on www.doa.state.wi.us under “Charitable Gaming”. BAHS cannot legally “lend” our raffle license out to any other group, even if BAHS is the beneficiary. What businesses or persons do you know personally who can really help donate to keep costs down, or make something available that not everyone has access to? Be detailed in planning for expenses – seemingly small things like postage stamps can add up quickly! In the end, how much do you think will be spent and how much raised? Will the difference be enough that you’ll feel like your time was worthwhile? What are your promotion strengths? Promoting an event to the general public can be very expensive and time consuming – make sure you have a solid plan! Are other groups or charities already doing something similar? Is there room for another? Are there things going on that might detract from participation like a Packer game?
