Anglo-Saxon Shield Project
Assignment: You will create a shield worthy of an Anglo-Saxon hero! Although Beowulf defeated Grendel by himself, you
will work with one or two partners to complete your battle shield.

This shield will let any challenger see the attributes that make your culture strong. Remember that you are Anglo-Saxon.
What attributes/characteristics do you view as important?

Your shield must cover four topics of cultural importance. For each topic, you must provide two quotations where the
topic is represented in a meaningful way. Thus, each shield will have eight quotes in total.

MLA citation is required for all quotes.

Quotations must cover the length of the poem (you should not have quotes from just one or two sections; the entire poem
should be represented).

For each quotation, you must explain the significance of the topic. First, paraphrase the quote, then make an argument
about what cultural value your topic reveals. For example, when Beowulf strips himself of his armor before fighting
Grendel, what does that reveal about bravery in battle?

Your shield will contain a six-word slogan that sums up how you approach life as an Anglo-Saxon. Also, no inappropriate
slogans. Keep it NC appropriate.

Your shield needs to be the equivalent of two or more pieces of paper. It must also have color. You must cut it out so
that the shape is one of the important features of your shield.

You will be assessed on both the quality of your work and your explanation of Anglo-Saxon values and textual support.
Attach your rubric to your shield.
