A new transmedia project based in Dundee and the launch of a new,
free, iPhone horror game
Other is a location-based horror game for iPhone which uses sound to unleash a
hidden adventure on Dundee's streets. The game, available to download from 31
May 2013, has been developed by the National Theatre of Scotland and
independent games development studio Quartic Llama. Using the Unity 3D engine,
to game leads the player on a sinister journey through the streets of real-life
Dundee. This is the first time that National Theatre of Scotland has ever developed
and designed a game.
The Other game has been created through a community based project involving
writing groups and noise workshops across Dundee. The workshops have been
taking place since April and have included the Eh! Write – Community Writing Group
and St John’s Roman Catholic High School. Many of the sounds and stories generated
in these workshops have shaped and been used as integral parts of the game.
Starting at Dundee Rep Theatre, the player follows the route through Dundee,
uncovering hidden stories and buried secrets by finding locations and solving
puzzles. As the journey develops, a fictional, darker side of the city is discovered,
where the world of Dundee is subverted, the possibility of horror is around every
corner, and the secret of Other is revealed.
As well as the game and the writing workshops, Other has been a wider transmedia
project which has included a 48 hour short film challenge entitled ‘Two Days of
Darkness’, a games jam which invited Abertay University students and St John’s High
School pupils to design a new horror game, and an online scrapbook. The films and
games were all made to an incredibly high standard due to Dundee’s unbeatable
reputation for digital technology, and will be featured on the Other online scrapbook
www.otherdundee.com.
The launch of the Other game will take place Friday 31 May-Sunday 2 June when live
theatre will combine with promenade site-specific tours of the route bringing an
even darker side of Dundee to life. At the end of the tours there will be a celebration
in Duke’s Corner where the ‘Two Days of Darkness’ short films and games, made as
part of the Other project, will be showcased along with live music. These tours will
also be fully accessible to deaf audiences.
The live performances have been produced in collaboration with community groups
including loadsaweeminsingin, Dundee Rep Youth Theatre, Dundee Rep Community
Company, students from Dundee College, Whitfield group and local musicians.
The Other game will run from 31 May 2013 and can be downloaded free from the
iPhone App Store, It is recommended to download it via wi-fi.
Other is inspired by, and created to support, Let the Right One In, a stage adaptation
by Jack Thorne based on the Swedish novel and film by John Ajvide Lindqvist.
Directed by John Tiffany. Dundee Rep 5-29 June 2013. Tickets on sale at
dundeerep.co.uk.
Let the Right One In is presented by National Theatre of Scotland by arrangement
with Marla Rubin Productions Ltd and Bill Kenwright in association with Dundee Rep
Theatre.
Other creative director Philippa Tomlin said: “We’re really excited to be working on
a project supporting Let The Right One In. It’s such a wonderfully dark and beautiful
story and this has inspired our stories for the Other game. We’ve met and worked
with some brilliantly creative people along the way and that, combined with
Dundee’s atmosphere and all its rich layers of history, make it the perfect setting for
this game.”
Quartic Llama’s support of National Theatre of Scotland’s Other project has received
a New Arts Sponsorship Grant of £5,000 from Arts & Business Scotland.
