Committee on Civic Engagement
Senate of the Associated Students 84th Session
Minutes for Thursday, October 27th, 2016 at 9:00 a.m.
1664 N. Virginia St. Reno, NV 89503, President’s Conference Room in the
Center for Student Engagement, 3rd Floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union
1. CALL MEETING TO ORDER*
Senator Green called this meeting of Civic Engagement to order at 9:02 AM on Thursday the 27th in
the President’s Conference Room in the Center for Student Engagement, 3rd Floor of the Joe
Crowley Student Union. Presiding Secretary Chris Milner.
2. ROLL CALL*
Senator Bond, Eshenbaugh, Green, Jackson, and Jacoby were all present
3. PUBLIC COMMENT*
There was no public comment at this time.
4. MINUTES
Senator Green seeking a motion to approve the minutes from October 20th, 2016.
Senator Eshenbaugh moved to approve the minutes of October 20th 2016 by unanimous consent.
Senator Green asked if there was any consent to the motion.
Nobody replied.
Senator Green carried the motion.
5. OLD BUSINESS
a. Non-Profit Organization Recognition
Senator Green stated that the Non-profit Organization went out, which Senator
Bond is taking care of and it is very neat.
b. Student Service Civic Engagement Series
Senator Green opened the conversation of Civic Engagement Series by stating
that Dr. Ellis has gotten the letter and there is still talk of how the 100 hour
challenge is set up it makes it seem that if you sign up you will have to complete
100 hours. There are no consequences if you do not complete the 100 hours but,
if she sends it out it makes it seem though as if all 100 employees will need to
complete the 100 hours. So currently she is trying to see if there is anyway that
she can change that. Seeing that she is the Vice President of Student Services we
cannot really blame her.
c. Educational Program
Senator Green moved into the Education Program. We are working with
communities and schools. This is a new program where we will be attending
schools not six. I brought this up at Senate a little bit yesterday, but the
Committee of Academics will be taking one of the schools and we will be taking
the other. We have this all planned out, we have mascots to make it a fully
interactive event. We are still trying to figure out which book we are going to use,
because the Wolf pack only has three children’s books we can use. We really
want to make sure that this is an interactive event. We need one professional
staff to be in attendance, it is going to be one from ASUN and one from another
department. I am thinking the other one will be from the Joe. This is because Dr.
Ellis wants to make sure that we do not do anything that is, or that could
potentially be negative. That way a full time staff member will be there.
6. NEW BUSINESS
a. Givepulse volunteer events
Senator Green stated that givepulse has another event that is coming up on
November 1st 2016, which I plan on attending and hope you guys will too. Make
sure to check givepulse because there are a bunch of new ones. There was one really
interesting opportunity yesterday that allowed a lot of people to go to schools and
help people study, which I heard a lot of people took advantage of that. In addition,
it looks like the competition for leader board has really taken off; Director Long is
pulling a head by a hair. Therefore I see many more volunteer opportunities in his
future. Also this weekend at the Joe, I believe it was sent out over out Senate emails,
they will be giving our candy to children. If you want to give back to the children it
would be really nice to see some senators there. Other than those just check
givepulse, and make sure to wear your 100 hour shirts when you go out and
volunteer, which we can also use for the video for Civic Engagement next year.
Senator Jackson reminded the committee to sign up for the givepulse and make sure
to let people know about the campaign and to click the link on the Facebook page.
Senator Green asked Senator Jackson to repeat the statement.
Senator Jackson responded by saying that she put the link on the Facebook page.
Senator Green is going to make sure that everyone will take advantage of that,
because it is a very good event and he thinks that we will have more leaders at these
events.
b. Resolution in favor of more service learning classes on campus
Senator Green stated that Senator Bond agreed to take on more volunteer
opportunities on campus, which I am sure she will get that to us soon. There is
no rush though, because I know that legislation is wordy.
c. Legislation Proposals
Senator Green mentioned that other than that does anyone have any other ideas
for legislation proposals that we can do? I do not want to keep planning things
that seem to be repeating themselves.
No body responded.
7. PUBLIC COMMENT*
There is no public comment at this time.
8. ADJOURNMENT
Senator Green adjourned this meeting of Civic Engagement at 9:08 AM on Thursday 27th 2016 in the
President’s Conference Room in the Center for Student Engagement, 3rd Floor of the Joe Crowley
Student Union

Senator Bradley,
Thank you for bringing it to my attention that an inability has arisen regarding the
posting of meeting agendas in the Ansari Business Building due to a remodel.
This omission contradicts NRS241.023(a). However, I do not find this means any of the
meetings which have occurred in the intervening period should be cancelled, nullified, or
otherwise dismissed. This is because of NRS 241.011 which states, “It is the intent of the law
that their (a public entity) actions be taken openly and that their deliberations be conducted
openly.” The meeting agendas were posted at the other places as provided by the Statutes of
the Associated Students and were posted in at least two locations online. This demonstrates a
commitment to maintaining the openness of ASUN meetings. Further, it would not be proper to
post a meeting agenda in any other location except the prominent one in the Ansari Business
Building which, due to the remodel, is unavailable
While any meetings which are held in the time between when the board was removed
and when it is eventually replaced will be admissible under Nevada Open Meeting Law, I
encourage our College of Business Senators to reach out to the Dean or appropriate
administrative officer to find an acceptable alternate location for future agendas to be posted
in the interim. Respectfully,
