2016-2017 High School Band
Band Handbook
Course Description/Syllabus
Instructor: Ms. Kristine Schuldt
School Phone: 320-748-7233 ext. 128
Email: [email protected]
Length of Class: Full Year
Time: Period 2
Grades: 9-12
Course Description:
The CGB High School Band meets 2-3 times per week (Monday, Wednesday, and every other
Friday) during period 2. Through band, students get the opportunity to develop and refine their
musical abilities through lessons, rehearsals, performances, and other opportunities. Students will
be exposed to a variety of musical styles, including marches, pep band tunes, and classical
selections. Students will take part in Concert Band and Pep Band; additionally, they will have the
option of joining Jazz Band and entering the Solo and Ensemble Contest.
Course Objectives:
 Develop and refine individual musical abilities on chosen instrument
 Work together as a band ensemble to create beautiful music and perform skillfully at all
performance opportunities
 Develop a knowledge and understanding of musical notation, music history, and the
process of making musical decisions
Student Responsibilities:
It is the student’s responsibility to come prepared to every lesson, rehearsal, and performance
(this includes having a working instrument, music, a pencil, and having prepared the music); to
actively take part in each band rehearsal; to put forth their best effort; and to promote a band
community where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and respected.
Teacher Responsibilities:
It is the teacher’s responsibility to come prepared to every lesson, rehearsal, and performance; to
provide students with a quality music education in which students are challenged to expand their
musical abilities; to communicate clearly and effectively; and to promote a band community
where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and respected.
Parent Responsibilities:
I believe that parents play a crucial role in their child’s life.
It is the parent’s responsibility to encourage their child’s musical endeavors, to make every effort
to attend all musical performances, and to work together with the band director to help make
band a great experience for everyone.
Grading:
Each student’s grade will be comprised of the following categories:
1) Rehearsal participation: 30 points per rehearsal. The band is a community where each
person is important, and when one student misses a rehearsal, that absence impacts the
Band 2
2)
3)
4)
5)
entire band. Each student is expected to attend every rehearsal; be on time; have
instrument, music, and pencil ready; and participate in a respectful and engaged manner.
Lessons: 20 points per lesson. Each student is required to attend 3 lessons per quarter.
Students should space out their lessons evenly throughout the quarter. Lesson time slots
are open throughout the week from first through fourth hour, and occasionally there will
be lesson times available in the afternoon. (See Lesson Sign-Up below)
Concerts/Performances: 250 points per concert. As with rehearsals, it is vitally
important that each student be present at the various concerts and performances
throughout the year. Concerts are the musical equivalent to a final test that you would
have in a math or science classroom. (See below for Concert dates and more details)
Pep Band: 30 points per event. Students are expected to show up on time for pep band
with their instruments and music. (See below for Pep Band schedule and more details)
Other Assignments: At various times throughout the year, other assignments will be
given to students. The first of these assignments is found on page 5 of this handbook and
is due on September 16th. Additional assignments may be designated as make-up work
for students who need to boost their grade due to missed rehearsals, performances, or late
assignments. (See Make-Up Assignments below)
Pep Band:
All 7th-12th grade band students are expected to be at all pep band performances unless they are
participating in a school-sponsored activity that prevents their participation. Pep band is an
important part of the band program as it is both an opportunity to support fellow classmates and
a chance to perform for the community. Student attire for pep band will follow the school dress
code. Please see Ms. Schuldt if you have any questions.
Fall Pep Band Schedule:
See attached sheet.
Concerts/Performances:
All students are expected to be at all concerts and performances throughout the year. (Solo and
Ensemble Contest is not required but highly encouraged.) When conflicts arise, parents will need
to contact Ms. Schuldt at the earliest possible date.

For all concerts, unless otherwise stated, the student concert dress is as follows:

Lessons Sign-Up: The lesson sign-up sheet will be placed in the band room on top of the Junior
High Folder Cabinet. When signing up for a lesson, keep in mind what class you are in during
that period (and try to stay away from days when you have tests/presentations in that class).
Whenever possible, students are encouraged to sign up for a lesson during Common Resource
Time. If a student has trouble finding a time that will work, he/she should contact the director as
soon as possible.
Lesson Procedures: Ms. Schuldt will either come to get you from your classroom, or she will
issue a pass. Once per quarter, students are allowed to sign up for a group lesson with other
students who play the same instrument and are in the same ensemble. For Quarter 1, the 1st
lesson is due by September 30th, the 2nd by October 28th, and the 3rd by November 3rd (last day of
Quarter 1).
Make-Up Assignments: When students miss rehearsals or pep band performances, they are
expected to complete an assignment to make up for their missing grade. Ms. Schuldt will provide
examples of what will count towards that assignment. Make up work should be turned in within
2 weeks of the missed event, or by the end of the quarter (whichever is sooner).
Cell Phones: As per school policy, all cell phones are to be turned off during the school day.
Cell phone use during band will not be tolerated.
Food/Beverage: As per school policy, no food or beverage is allowed in the band room except
with prior administrative approval. Furthermore, gum is not allowed in the band room.
Common Resource Time (CRT): Please refer to the school handbook for details regarding
CRT. In addition, the following rules/guidelines are in place for all band CRT days.
1) Students must come to class with their schoolwork and be prepared to work for the entire
period.
2) Electronic devices shall be used for listening purposes only with students using
headphones/earbuds. Electronic devices used for schoolwork must be approved on a daily
basis by Ms. Schuldt (with the exception of calculators).
3) Students wishing to go to another classroom during the CRT must present a pass signed
by that teacher. Students will be in charge of the proper signing in/out procedures. At
least 3 minutes before the end of the class period all students must return to the band
room, sign in, and present their signed pass to Ms. Schuldt.
