BCRPA Choose to Move FAQ for older adults What is Choose to Move Choose to Move is a 6 month personal planning and support program designed to help you engage in physical activity. By taking part in Choose to Move you engage in physical activity that you enjoy and that suits your interests, goals, abilities and income. This may be participating in a physical activity program or service that is offered by the recreation centre, such as ActivAge™ fitness class, swimming in the pool or utilizing the weight room; OR you may choose physical activities that get you moving on your own schedule-gardening, walking, biking. It is your choice! What will you receive as a Choose to Move participants As a Choose to Move participant you receive ongoing motivational support from a certified activity coach and you work with the activity coach to develop a customized 6 month physical activity action plan. Throughout the 6 months, you receive the following: 1. A one-on-one consultation with the activity coach at the start of the program. During the consultation you determine your physical activity interests and develop an action plan for physical activity. The one-on-one consultation takes place at the recreation centre and is approximately one hour 2. Regular monthly motivational group meetings with other Choose to Move participants to learn setting goals, healthy weight management, reducing stress and anxiety and other health related topics (4 meetings in total). The meetings are one hour in duration. 3. Regular telephone check-ins with the activity coach to discuss progress toward goals and any challenges you may be experiencing. Telephone check-in calls are approximately 15 minutes and is arranged at a time that is convenient for you 4. Opportunity to enroll in the ActivAge™ fitness class for older adults, free of charge 5. Participant toolkit containing a number of resources to support physical activity How long is the program? Choose to Move is a 6 month program. • The first 3 months are the “active” phase where you receive the greatest amount of support. The second 3 months is the “taper” phase where you receive telephone check-ins from the activity coach once a month Who is eligible to participate in Choose to Move? Anyone who is: • 65 years or older • Not regularly active (self-reported as inactive or less than 150 minutes of physical activity per week) • Interested in getting physically active! Evaluation Choose to Move is a new program and is being evaluated to learn more about how it works. UBC researchers at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility are inviting Choose to Move participants to take part in the evaluation. More information is provided when you register and you will learn more about the evaluation at your first group meeting – you do not need to do anything until then unless they have questions for the research team. Once you register for Choose to Move, you will be provided with two documents 1. Invitation letter to participate in the Choose to Move evaluation 2. Choose to Move evaluation consent form These documents provide more detail about the evaluation and the evaluation process. Questions?
