All That Racquet
Issue : June 17
Message from the President
Welcome to the June edition of All that Racquet.
In this edition find out how all our tennis teams are doing in
the East of Scotland Leagues, the date of our next quiz night,
who won our schools squash tournament and much more!
I am delighted to see so much activity on both our squash and tennis courts. Our
membership has shown robust growth since the start of 2017, the best in over 2 years
which is fantastic. It’s great to see so many people enjoying their sport.
As you know our website was recently hacked and Neelu is working hard to restore it
and to make it more secure. We will continue to update you on progress. In the
meantime we will keep you up to date with events and activities via email and Social
Media.
I hope you find the newsletter informative and as always if there is anything in particular
you would like to see included then please let me know [email protected].
Regards
Laura

A Great Day!
As part of the Great British Tennis Weekend we opened our courts
in May to children of all ages and their parents who enjoyed a fun
afternoon of coaching, drills, games, burgers and strawberries. We
had over 40 people who came along and gained 6 new members.
Thank you to all our helpers on the day, to Graeme and Calum for
their coaching and to Neelu, assisted by Fraser for tasty burgers!
Tennis Teams
We are more than half way through our matches in the East of Scotland Leagues.
How are our teams doing?

Junior U12s have joined forces with Craigmillar Park to enter a team and are
playing in division 1. They have won 2 and lost 2 and are currently sitting 3 rd
with one match to go. Good luck in your final match.

Ladies are playing in division 4B and have had a lot of tight matches. They
have won 5 and lost 2 and are currently sitting 2nd in the league with 3 matches
to go. Can they go top?

Mens 1st team are playing in division 4A and have won 2, drawn 1 and lost 4
and are 5th in the league with only a point separating them from 4th place. Dig
deep for your remaining matches!

Mens 2nd team are playing in division 8A, after a good start with 2 wins they
have drawn 1 and lost 4 and are sitting in 4th position. Can they find their form
from the start of the season?
Good luck to all our teams in their final matches of the season.

Annual Club Tennis Tournament
Our annual club tennis tournament will be held from
12th-19th August with our finals day on the afternoon of
Saturday 19th August followed by our traditional tennis tea.
Our club tournament includes singles, doubles and mixed
doubles and is run over the week with daily match reports.
It is open to all members, partners for doubles are drawn at
random. Entry is £4 per tournament and entry sheets will go
up in the clubhouse in the next couple of weeks.
Tennis Social Doubles Mini Leagues
The social doubles league is now into round 4 and going strong!
It's a great way to get some fun doubles in and meet other
members at the club.
Firstly, congratulations to the winners of round 3: Karen Davis and
Tam Waugh. After taking the lead in the early stages with a string
of wins, no one could catch them, although Stephen Whitby and
Anne Woodburn gave it a good effort in second place, 6 points
behind. Some close matches in there!
It's still early days in the current round, however Neelu and Robin Tarry have
taken a slim early lead with 2 wins, leading Tam and Jane with 1 win.
If you'd like to take part in round 5, keep an eye out for emails from Abercorn
in June regarding sign-up.
Tennis Court Etiquette
We are all delighted to see that the courts are being well used and in order for us all to
enjoy our tennis safely here are a few important pointers to help us do that.



To avoid any accidents, please don’t walk behind another court during a game,
wait for the players to finish the game, or minimally the point.
So as not to disrupt players on adjacent courts keep noise down to a minimum
and confined to your court as much as possible
Please keep our courts tidy and dispose of any rubbish you have in the bin
provided

Squash Schools Tournament
Congratulations to George Watsons who won the schools squash tournament run by
Senga at the end of May. There were 6 primary school teams playing the event, 3
teams from Royal High, 2 from George Watsons and a mixed team
from Duddingston and Parsons Green. Each match was timed squash
lasting 7 minutes each.
All the kids really enjoyed the matches and a big thanks to all the
helpers.
Junior Squash
Our expanding junior squash section means that Saturday morning coaching is
changing to include a team training session.
10am-11am Team Training only
11am-12noon Beginner/Improver
If you require any further details this please email [email protected]
Defibrillator - refresher
training
It’s 18 months since the club purchased a defibrillator from The Craig
Hogkinson Trust with the assistance of the LTA. The importance of
having a defibrillator speaks for itself and it is important that everyone
reminds themselves of how to use it so please take the time to watch this short video
(just the first part, you don't have to worry about the maintenance part). The defibrillator
is located on the wall outside the squash courts beside the fire extinguisher.
