Financial Technology is comprised of a broad set
of technologies enabling companies, especially
startups to disintermediate established systems.
Key areas include Payments (peer-to-peer,
digital wallets, alternative currencies); Financing
(microlending & crowdfunding); and Risk
Mitigation (risk assessment, fraud detection, &c).
CPA Analysts searched for payments where the
mobile devices were used for authentication and
payment, including phones, tablets, and NFC
enabled devices.
Mobile Payments patent filings have experienced
modest growth (11% CAGR) from 2006-2013
prior to a significant decline in 2014.
The Top 5 players are Visa, Qualcomm, SK
Telecom, Mastercard, and Alphabet, with the
other top players primarily in payment
processing, telecommunications, and mobile
device manufacturers. Qualcomm has been the
number one filer from 2012 onward.
Intellectual Ventures holds key patents in this
area, and many of these are heavily cited by
players in the industry.
