Participation in athletics and other extra-curriculars is an
important part of what makes high school fun. The
bonding between teammates, the thrill of competition, the
anticipation of a big game--even the pride of
accomplishment in "surviving" a difficult practice-contribute to a culture of joy and unity within the student
body.
Even more importantly, good athletic programs help kids develop virtue, by challenging them to put
team before self, by helping them learn to delay gratification, by instilling the discipline to work hard
and stay focused, by teaching them how to handle constructive criticism, by developing
sportsmanship after a loss and by training them how to win with grace and a generous spirit. As
such, a well-structured, balanced athletic program is central to the mission of St. Michael.
St. Michael is committed, therefore, to building a competitive athletic program which will eventually
play at the 3A-4A level. At our August, 2016 opening, students will have access to a new gym,
locker-rooms and a practice field. The "master plan" for construction includes a future
football/soccer stadium, a track, a field house, and a baseball and softball field, and we will be
seeking donors to assist us in building these facilities as quickly as possible.
Consistent with the policies and recommendations of the Alabama High School Athletic
Association, St. Michael will begin play in 2016 as an "underway" school. We will sponsor and
staff three athletic teams for boys and three teams for girls, one for each athletic season--fall,
winter and spring respectively. Those sports will be volleyball, basketball and soccer for women
and football, basketball and soccer for men, all at the JV level. Because swimming is an "offcampus" sport typically taught at the club level, those students swimming in clubs will also be able
to represent the school in AHSAA competitions if they desire to do so. We will begin a
cheerleading program in year 1.
We are excited, too, to work in union with the middle school programs of Christ the King, St.
Benedict and St. Patrick. Strong athletes from the 7th and 8th grades at those schools are
encouraged to try-out for St. Michael JV teams, and if they are chosen, may represent St. Michael
in interscholastic play, giving these students an option to develop their talents within the Catholic
school system that we've never had before.
Beginning in our third year, and perhaps sooner, we will add baseball and softball to our program,
and we will be open to adding other sports dependent on student interest. Thus by 2018, we will
sponsor a minimum of five full varsity sports for both men and women and become a full member
of the AHSAA. Baseball and softball players are encouraged to continue developing their talents at
the club and municipal level in the interim, recognizing they will be the foundation of a future varsity
program, and we will seek to acknowledge their accomplishments and successes as studentathletes just as we do with other athletes. We're building something special, but can't do all that we
want to do at once. Our program will grow and mature as our enrollment grows.
GO CARDINALS!
Do you like our first school logos? Our thanks to Dan Johnson and
4PM Media for designing them for us!
