MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

Memorandum of Understanding
between
Griffith University
and
University of Southern Denmark
Griffith University, Queensland, Australia and University of Southern Denmark, Odense,
Denmark (individually a party and collectively parties to this Memorandum) believe that:
1.
Mutual benefit can be derived from scholarly interaction, cultural interchange, co-operative
research and other forms of academic collaboration;
2.
The parties regard the following areas of cooperation as desirable and feasible:

Exchange of graduate students and academic staff members;
Collaborative research and possible exchange of academic papers;
Mutual assistance in the preparation of seminars, conferences and workshops;
Exchange of academic publication materials or other information;
Co-operation in training projects for specified areas of development;
Opportunities for other forms of co-operation, such as the delivery of award and nonaward courses.
Initially, the collaboration will focus on the following research themes which have been
identified in areas of mutual strength and synergy:
a) Science, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biology
b) Engineering and Technology, Welfare Technology, Robotics and IT
c) Health (including the “Twins Register” studies at both SDU and GU), Public Health,
Psychology (including Child Studies), Medicine, Biotechnology, Sports and Exercise
Science;
d) Business, Marketing and Management, Sustainable Tourism, Law and Journalism;
e) Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Design and research collaborations with the Hans
Christian Andersen Centre.
Future collaborations may also be extended to exchange of knowledge and benchmarking in
other areas of interest such as:
f) Student Centred Learning;
g) Campus development, research park, cooperation with university hospital;
h) Sports university / sports development initiatives;
i) Internationalisation such as integration of international students.
The above areas are initial focus points and are not exclusive.
4.
In addition, the parties wish to explore the following initiatives:
a) Professional and general staff collaboration;
b) Research collaborations and international network building for strategic linkage
partnerships, as well as joint mobility /joint programme development;
c) Strategic planning, policy development and capacity building;
d) Joint collaborative research and mentorship of research scholars;
e) Adjunct and joint appointments of research staff through mutual agreements where
opportunities may arise from joint funding applications;
f) Joint training and supervision of graduate students;
g) Joint publication in academic journals and presentations at seminars and conferences;
h) Joint applications for research grants;
i) Procurement of funds to facilitate visiting academic staff and postgraduate students for
short term and longer term periods ranging from 3 months to 12 months.
j) Procurement of 3rd party funding from government and non-government sources for
research project initiatives.
5.
The terms of specific areas of cooperation shall be further considered and agreed upon in
writing by the parties prior to the initiation of any particular activity.
6.
Any specific program will be subject to mutual consent, availability of funds and approval of
both parties.
7.
The parties agree that this Memorandum of Understanding is not a formal legal agreement
giving rise to any legal relationship, rights, duties or consequences, but it is only a definite
expression and record of the purpose of the parties to which the parties are bound in honour
only.
8.
This Memorandum of Understanding shall remain in effect for a period of five (5) years from
the date of signing and it may be renewed for a further five (5) years by the mutual agreement
of both parties. The Memorandum can be terminated at any time by either party upon
provision of six (6) months written notice to the other party.
