Important Rules to Remember: *You cannot set a serve, a free ball, or a roll shot. The only time you can take a first ball overhead is on a hard driven attack - the attack cannot have any arc to it in order to be considered hard driven. *If you set a ball (2nd contact) to your hitter, it must have less than 2 rotations of spin...so it has to be REALLY clean. We are discouraging girls from using hand setting right now and instead would prefer to see them bump set to avoid conflicts on this rule. You should not set a ball over the net at all either. *Open hand tips are not allowed in beach volleyball. A roll shot that comes off the palm of the hand is allowed, and knuckles are allowed. They can also use a fist, however, we would prefer to see them use knuckles instead because they will develop better ball control off their knuckles, but a fist is legal. *If one partner was blocking and they touched the ball on the block that is considered the first contact in beach volleyball...therefore they will only have 2 contacts to play the ball over after that. This is different than in indoor. *Contact with the net is not allowed AT ALL. This is also different than indoor, where you can contact the net anywhere except the top white strip. In beach, any contact with the net anywhere is considered a violation. For a complete review of the things we went over at clinic, please visit the link to the YouTube video from last year's clinic which was filmed. This is at the bottom of the same webpage as the schedule. This is highly recommended if you were unable to attend this year's clinic and have never played beach doubles before. A few reminders: ****We did our best to accommodate everyone's conflicts, but we may have missed some or you may have something come up on league day. In the case of a conflict, FIRST try to get a sub to play with your partner. The contact information for the other girls in the league is all on the website, and is password protected. You can have another league player sub for you or a player outside the league, as long they are in the same age group or younger). If it is impossible to get a sub, you MUST contact BOTH players on the opposing team and email [email protected] to let them know of the cancellation. If you are a no call, no show you will first be given one warning, and if it happens a second time you will be removed from the league. Please be respectful of other people's time. We have people who drive a long distance to come play here and it is extremely rude to have an opponent commute here only to find out they don't have a match. If you have to cancel a match and it is not possible to make it up (remember that most of the time slots are full each night with league matches), then the cancelling team will be considered a forfeit. If you have to make up a match, it is your responsibility to report the outcome via email to Dawn. ****Keeping score - parents please help the girls keep score if you are there to watch. Players should loudly call the score before they serve every ball, but it is helpful to have parents help in case there is confusion. The hardest part for the girls to remember is switching sides. Due to sun, wind, and other variables, you don't stay on the same side for the whole game. You switch sides every 7 total points in a game to 21, and every 5 total points in a game to 15. The first two games are played to 21, and regardless of the outcome, the girls should play the third game to 15 (time permitting) for the extra repetitions. For example, at scores of 4-3, 8-6, 14-14, 18-17 - those are all side changes in a match to 21. 3-2, 5-5, or 9-6 would be examples of side change points in a game to 15. You must win by two, so sometimes a match can go into extended digits. ****It is the responsibility of the winning team to report the win/loss record for the match to Dawn or Melissa of Platform Elite, so please find one of them immediately following your match (one or both of them will be there at all times - you just need to find them because they wander among the courts). ****If you are playing the last scheduled match on your court that night, both teams are responsible for helping to break down the court. This includes the 4 anchors that hold the lines in place, the lines, two antennae, and balls at your court. Please bring it all to Court 4 where the boxes and ball bags are located. *****Remember to bring water to the park, and a towel is helpful to wipe all the sand off before you head to your car. You can wear whatever you are comfortable in. Some girls wear spandex and sports bras, especially when it gets hot. Others choose to play in t-shirts or tank tops. You may want to wear sunglasses or a hat and DON’T FORGET TO WEAR SUNSCREEN!
